Antisemitism, characterized by prejudice, discrimination, and hostility toward Jews, is marked by two enduring paradoxes. First, although people typically defer to powerholders, perceptions of Jews as powerful are associated with disdain rather than deference among antisemites. Second, antisemitism emerges among individuals with opposing ideological worldviews, those who strongly support societal hierarchies and those who vehemently oppose them. We report the design and results of the first Israeli multicenter screening program for colorectal neoplasia. The screening protocol comprised a risk questionnaire, fecal occult blood testing, flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy. Hereditary factor XI deficiency may remain undiagnosed until severe bleeding is observed after an operation or trauma. Two such cases were encountered and, therefore, a regular screening test for coagulation disorders among urological patients was initiated. During 2 years (1975 and 1976) 10 additional cases of factor XI deficiency were detected: 5 severe and 5 partial. All patients were Ashkenazic Jews of Eastern European origin. We report the presence of sickle cell trait in several members of a white Jewish family. The trait was discovered when the propositus developed massive splenic infarction at high altitude. No erythrocyte markers characteristic of African ancestry were detected in any of the family members. This is the first bona fide documentation of sickle trait among white Jews.

HLA-DRW4 was found in all 11 female and 10 out of 12 male Jewish patients with pemphigus vulgaris, a frequency of 91% in all, which was significantly higher than the 25% frequency among normal Jewish controls. The relative risk was 31.5. The BW38-DRW4 haplotype occurred in 12 out of 22 patients (55%) but in only 2% of White non-Jews and 11% of normal Jewish people.

Subclinical vitamin A deficiency is related to increased morbidity and mortality in infants and children. Previous studies indicate that the traditional diet of Moslem Bedouins, an important ethnic group in Southern Israel, is low in vitamin A content. The presence of gastric epithelium or mucosa at any level of the gastrointestinal tract is a well-known phenomenon. In duodenal mucosa, congenital heterotopic gastric mucosa or acquired metaplastic gastric surface epithelium (MGE) may be found. In the present study 325 duodenal biopsies (260 upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and 65 abdominal surgery biopsies) from 297 patients were retrospectively reviewed. Hunter disease, an X-linked recessive lethal, has recently been observed to occur in high frequency in Israeli Jews as compared with other Caucasian populations. Using the equilibrium distribution of the number of affected males, one can computed the probability that the excess frequency is due to genetic drift. Our results demonstrate that the elevated frequency of Hunter disease is compatible with drift.

The paper describes the sociodemography of donor insemination recipients in Israel. Arab recipients are very few. Among the Jews, married recipients are generally younger than their single counterparts, and they are somewhat less educated and more religious. Ethnically, the percentage of Orientals among the married recipients is relatively higher; among the single women, Orientals are under-represented. On the whole, however, donor insemination seems to have reached Jewish Israelis of all segments of society.

Of 1,289 measles case-patients during April 2025-March 2026 in Jerusalem, Israel, 11 children died, a measles-specific mortality rate of 1.1 deaths/100,000 population. The measles-specific mortality rate among children <5 years of age was 7.7 deaths/100,000 population but 80.1 deaths/100,000 population in 6 neighborhoods populated by ultraorthodox Jews, a 47% measles-attributed death fraction.

Recent political movements have been woven into therapy models that include specific ideas considered discriminatory towards Jews. Conceptualized around decolonial models of psychopathology, these frameworks include untested and unassailable assumptions regarding Zionism and Jewish identity that erode the scientific basis of existing evidence-based treatments. We discuss how this movement, with its additional emphasis on activism, promotes a modern form of antisemitism and identity-based discrimination. We conclude with recommendations for addressing this epistemic discrimination.

Mutations in the glucocerebrosidase (GBA) gene have been recently identified as contributory to Parkinson disease (PD) in Ashkenazi Jews. In the present study, the clinical characteristics of Ashkenazi patients with PD with GBA mutations (n = 40) were compared to those of Ashkenazi patients with PD without any known GBA mutation (n = 108). The overall clinical manifestations and age at disease onset did not differ in patients with GBA mutations compared to patients without mutations.

Over a period of about 12 months a large number of Ethiopian Jews emigrated to Israel under very stressful conditions. Many of these immigrants were adolescents who came on their own, leaving their families behind. Despite the culture shock involved, most have done well. Nine of these youngsters, who developed psychiatric disabilities severe enough to warrant hospitalization, were referred to us. In this paper we describe the clinical and management problems posed by these patients.

McArdle disease is caused by a myophosphorylase deficiency consequent to defects in the PYGM gene. A minority of the over-133 known mutations are associated with ethnicity, occurring mainly in patients from western Europe, the United States, and Japan. We identified a novel mutation, c.632delG, in three unrelated families of Jewish descent originating from the Caucasus region. This possibly ethnicity-associated mutation can significantly facilitate the diagnosis in Jews of the Caucasus and contribute to genetic consultations.

The antitumour activity of cortiphen synthesized at the All-Union Cancer Research Centre of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences was studied on human tumour strains transplanted into nude mice and rats. Cortiphen was found to possess an expressed activity to kidney cancer, cancer of corpus uteri, chorionepithelioma, fibrosarcoma. Two strains of colon adenocarcinoma out of three have displayed an expressed sensitivity to cortiphen, while melanoma and Jewing sarcoma strains proved to be weakly sensitive to the preparation.
