The Austin osteotomy is a widely accepted method for correction of mild and moderate hallux valgus. In view of publications by Kitaoka et al. in 1991 and by Mann and colleagues, a more radical lateral soft tissue procedure was added to the originally described procedure. From September 1992 to January 1994, 85 patients underwent an Austin osteotomy combined with a lateral soft tissue procedure to correct their hallux valgus deformities. Seventy-nine patients (94 feet) were available for follow-up. The average patient age at the time of the operation was 47.1 years, and the average follow-up wa

AIMS: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) can cause wound infections via a 'Trojan Horse' mechanism, in which neutrophils engulf intestinal MRSA and travel to the wound, releasing MRSA after apoptosis. The possible role of intestinal MRSA in prosthetic joint infection (PJI) is unknown.
METHODS: Rats underwent intestinal colonization with green fluorescent protein (GFP)-tagged MRSA by gavage and an intra-articular wire was then surgically implanted. After ten days, the presence of PJI was determined by bacterial cultures of the distal femur, joint capsule, and implant. We exclud

This article describes an unusual case of a young adult with traumatic obturator fracture-dislocation of the hip, involving a large femoral head fragment and severe delamination of articular cartilage. The dislocation was irreducible by closed reduction because of interposing soft tissues, including the rectus femoris and iliopsoas muscles, and torn joint capsules, and therefore, open reduction was performed using an anterolateral approach in the lateral decubitus position. The large femoral head fragment was released from the ligamentum teres and fixed to the dislocated femoral head with head

BACKGROUND: The meniscus-deficient knee, especially in the lateral compartment, is prone to early degeneration, cartilage loss, and pain. Meniscus allograft transplantation (MAT) with an all-soft tissue graft and centralization is a technique used to treat unicompartmental pain and improve outcomes.
INDICATIONS: Isolated lateral MAT with centralization is indicated for unicompartmental pain in a meniscus-deficient knee without significant articular cartilage loss, limb malalignment, or ligamentous instability.
TECHNIQUE DESCRIPTION: For MAT preparation, an osteotome is used to remove the ant

Varus knee deformity is one of the most common deformities presenting for total knee arthroplasty (TKA). When present, a varus knee deformity contributes to overload of the medial joint compartment during gait, leading to increased medial compartment forces as well as lateral soft tissue lengthening. Additionally, a fixed varus deformity is associated with medial soft tissue contractures of the deep and superficial medial collateral ligament (MCL) and posteromedial capsule. With a fixed varus deformity, soft tissue releases may be necessary to create equivalent and rectangular flexion and exte

Inflammatory macrophages within the synovium play a pivotal role in the progression of arthritis inflammation. Effective drug therapy targeting inflammatory macrophages has long been a goal for clinicians and researchers. The standard approach for treating osteoarthritis (OA) involves systemic treatment and local injection. However, the high incidence of side effects associated with long-term drug administration increases the risk of complications in patients. Additionally, the rapid clearance of the joint cavity poses a biological barrier to the therapeutic effect. NADPH oxidase 4 (NOX4) is a

PURPOSE: Closed-wedge high tibial osteotomy (CW-HTO) requires shortening of the fibula or the fibular head or disruption of the proximal tibiofibular joint (PTFJ). However, no study has evaluated the proximal tibiofibular joint after the osteotomy. The aim of this study was to investigate the fate of the PTFJ after CW-HTO applied with using PTFJ disruption method.
METHODS: This prospective study included 22 knees of 20 patients who underwent CW-HTO. The mean age of the patients was 50 ± 4 years, and the mean follow-up period was 27.5 ± 14.3 months (12-46 months). The grade of gonarthrosis (Ah

This article conducts a retrospective analysis of 500 patients with posttraumatic elbow dysfunction admitted to our department from March 2019 to September 2020. The average time from injury to operation is 11 months (2-20 months). We adopt a personalized treatment method to completely remove the hyperplastic adhesion tissue and heterotopic ossification around the joint, remove part of the joint capsule and ligament, and release it to achieve maximum function. After the operation, an external fixator was used to stabilize the loosened elbow joint, and the patient was guided to perform rehabili

BACKGROUND: Management of acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) separations depends on the type, chronicity of injury, and patient demographics.
INDICATIONS: Coracoclavicular and acromioclavicular ligament reconstruction may be indicated for patients with chronic type 3 ACJ separation who have failed conservative treatment. We describe an arthroscopic-assisted approach to facilitate graft passage around the coracoid.
TECHNIQUE: Patients are placed in a beach chair position. A longitudinal incision at the midline of the distal clavicle is utilized for access to the ACJ, the distal clavicle, and the c

The pharmacokinetics of chondroitin sulfate (CS, Condrosulf, IBSA, Lugano, Switzerland) were investigated in rats and in healthy volunteers using CS tritiated at the reducing end and CS labeled with 131I or 99mTc respectively. A rapid absorption of orally administered CS is observed in rats and in humans when the drug is dissolved in water. Lower and delayed absorption is observed when CS is administered in gastroresistant capsules. The absolute bio-availability is 15 and 12% for rats and humans respectively. The CS shows a tropism for cartilagineous tissues in rats and for knee tissues in hum

In the twentieth century clubfoot was one of the commonest congenital deformities of the musculoskeletal system with an incidence in some races as low as 0.6 and in others as high as 6.8 per thousand live births (Polynesia). Males have the deformity twice as often as females. In the early 1900s forceful correction of the deformity as espoused by Hugh Owen Thomas was in vogue. In the 1930s Joseph Hiram Kite, like Hippocrates (400 BC), recommended repeated gentle manipulations to achieve a correction. Instead of bandages Kite used serial plaster casts to maintain the correction. During the late

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the outcomes of arthroscopy after proximal humeral plating and the occurrence of concomitant pathology and avascular necrosis.
METHODS: Forty-five patients (28 women; median age, 58.5 years [range, 30 to 82 years]) underwent arthroscopies of 46 shoulders because of unsatisfactory results after locked plating of proximal humeral fractures. They were prospectively followed up for 3, 12, and 24 months postoperatively. Relevant intra-articular lesions were documented. The patients were assigned to 1 of the following groups: (1) articular screw p

BACKGROUND: Subtotal lateral meniscectomy may lead to increased tibiofemoral contact pressures and early degenerative changes. Meniscal reconstruction using autograft tissue has been shown to restore load distribution and joint stability. This video demonstrates an arthroscopic technique for lateral meniscoplasty using a doubled semitendinosus tendon, combined with capsulodesis, to limit the meniscal extrusion rate.
INDICATIONS: Patients with postmeniscectomy syndrome and a sufficient residual meniscal rim who present with lateral compartment pain and preserved articular cartilage.

Currently, administration of Botulinum toxin Type A (BoNT/A) to treat arthritic pain has promising efficacy in clinical research. However, the mechanisms underlying anti-neurogenic inflammation mediated by BoNT/A remains unclear. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the effectiveness in macro and micro levels and to explore the causal mechanism of BoNT/A. Wistar rats (n = 60) were injected with 50ul complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) in the left ankle joint capsule to establish a model of chronic monoarthritis. Pain behaviour (Evoked pain assessment) and infrared thermal imaging testing were

BACKGROUND: Frozen shoulder (also known as adhesive capsulitis) occurs when the capsule, or the soft tissue envelope around the ball and socket shoulder joint, becomes scarred and contracted, making the shoulder tight, painful and stiff. It affects around 1 in 12 men and 1 in 10 women of working age. Although this condition can settle with time (typically taking 1 to 3 years), for some people it causes severe symptoms and needs referral to hospital. Our aim is to evaluate the clinical and cost-effectiveness of two invasive and costly surgical interventions that are commonly used in secondary c
