Evaluation of the efficiency of using Salmonella Kentucky and Escherichia coli O119 bacteriophages in the treatment and prevention of salmonellosis and colibacillosis in broiler chickens.

Phage therapy is considered an alternative modality in the treatment of different bacterial diseases. However, their therapeutic and preventive roles against infections caused by Salmonella Kentucky and Escherichia coli O119 were of little attention. In this study, two phages were isolated, characterized and assessed for their potential therapeutic and preventive roles against S. Kentucky and E. coli O119 infections in broilers. Commercial 1-day-old arboacres broiler chicks were assigned to seven groups: Group Ӏ was as a negative control, groups (П and Ш) were assigned as positive controls by …

Prevalence and risk factors associated with emergence of Rhodococcus equi resistance to macrolides and rifampicin in horse-breeding farms in Kentucky, USA.

The combination of a macrolide and rifampicin has been the mainstay of therapy in foals with Rhodococcus equi pneumonia for decades. Recent studies suggest that mass antimicrobial treatment of subclinically affected foals over time has selected for antimicrobial resistance. Our objective was to estimate the prevalence of R. equi strains resistant to macrolides and rifampicin at horse breeding farms in Kentucky. A hundred breeding farms in Kentucky were surveyed and R. equi were cultured from soil samples. Data were analyzed with logistic regression and generalized linear modeling (P < 0.05). S…

Estimation of the consumption of illicit drugs during special events in two communities in Western Kentucky, USA using sewage epidemiology.

Sewage epidemiology is a cost-effective, comprehensive, and non-invasive technique capable of determining semi-real-time community usage of drugs utilizing the concentration of drug residues in wastewater, wastewater inflow, and the population size served by a wastewater treatment plant. In this study, semi-real-time consumption rates of ten illicit drugs were determined using sewage epidemiology during special events including Independence Day, the 2017 solar eclipse, and the first week of an academic semester in the Midwestern United States. The average per-capita consumption rate of ampheta

Genomic diversity and resistome profiles of Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Kentucky isolated from food and animal sources in Ireland.

Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Kentucky is frequently isolated from poultry, dairy and beef cattle, the environment and people with clinical salmonellosis globally. However, the sources of this serovar and its diversity and antimicrobial resistance capacities remain poorly described in many regions. To further understand the genetic diversity and antimicrobial sensitivity patterns among S. Kentucky strains isolated from non-human sources in Ireland, we sequenced and analysed the genomes of 61 isolates collected from avian, bovine, canine, ovine, piscine, porcine, environmental and…

Analysis of Thoroughbred horse farm workers' compensation insurance claims in Kentucky: Injury frequency, cost, lost time, and associated occupational factors.

BACKGROUND: Thoroughbred horse farm workers self-report a high frequency of work-related injuries and pain. However, an analysis of Thoroughbred horse farm workers' compensation injury claims is absent from the literature, yet may benefit worker safety. METHODS: We analyzed workers' compensation insurance firm data containing 2276 claims filed between 2008 and 2015. Injury frequency, cost, and lost time per cause, nature, and body part injured were examined qualitatively and via univariate tests. Factors associated with high cost and high duration lost time claims were modeled via multivariab

Prevalence of Group I Salmonella Kentucky in domestic food animals from Pennsylvania and overlap with human clinical CRISPR sequence types.

Although infrequently associated with illness in humans, Salmonella enterica, subsp. enterica serovar Kentucky is the most common non-clinical, non-human serovar reported in the United States, being largely found in poultry and poultry products, as well as being associated with cattle. This serovar is polyphyletic and can be separated into two groups, Group I and II, based on CRISPR-typing analysis. In Salmonella Kentucky isolates from human clinical samples in Pennsylvania, both lineages are equally represented. The goal of this study was to determine whether both groups were also represented…

Emergence of ceftriaxone resistant Salmonella Kentucky in India driven by multiple novel variants of Salmonella genomic island carrying blaCTX-M-55.

BACKGROUND: Salmonella enterica serovar Kentucky increasingly implicated in multidrug-resistant (MDR) gastroenteritis globally. While chromosomally encoded resistance mediated by Salmonella Genomic Islands (SGIs) is well established in this serovar, recent years have seen the emergence of diverse SGI backbone variants and associated resistance cassettes. However, the distribution, structural variability, and role of these SGIs particularly in ceftriaxone-resistant S. Kentucky remain poorly characterized. METHODS: Between 2017 and 2021, 45 clinical S. Kentucky isolates were recovered from feca…

Farmwork-related injury among farmers 50 years of age and older in Kentucky and South Carolina: a cohort study, 2002-2005.

Farmers in the U.S. are becoming more diverse; the average age of the farmer is increasing, as is the number of women and minority farm operators. There is limited research on injury risk factors in these special populations of farmers. It is especially important to study the risk factors for injury in these growing and at-risk groups. A longitudinal survey was conducted of farmers (n = 1,394) age 50 and older who resided in Kentucky and South Carolina. The questionnaire was administered by telephone and mail surveys four times between 2002 and 2005 to the fixed cohort of farmers, obtained by …
