A wide variety of calcifications may develop in the urinary tract. Calculi, the most common form of urinary tract calcification, are usually radiopaque due to their calcium content, whereas cystine stones tend to be less opaque. In cortical nephrocalcinosis, calcification may be spotty or may appear as a thin rim outlining the cortex. Intracystic calcification is usually thin and peripheral and is often described as having an "eggshell" appearance. In renal masses, pure central calcification usually indicates malignancy, although malignancy may also be present with pure peripheral calcificatio

Nephrolithiasis is a complex disease that results from a combination of factors related to both urine composition and kidney morphoanatomy. Development of calcium oxalate monohydrate papillary calculi is linked to initial subepithelial calcification of renal papilla. Progressive tissue calcification depends on preexisting injury and involves reactive oxygen species. Many plant extracts that protect against oxidative stress manifest antilithiasic activity. Our study focused on determining the effects of polyphenols on a lithiasis rat model. Rats were pretreated with polyphenols and grape seed e

Real-time ultrasonography was found to be useful in the diagnosis of hydronephrosis, renal calculi, and renal neoplasia in the dog and cat. One dog with hydronephorsis, one with renal calculi, and a cat with a renal neoplasm were scanned with a real-time ultrasonic scanner. Abnormal enlargement due to fluid accumulation was determined by ultrasonographic imaging in the case of hydronephrosis. The location and mobility of the renal calculus were observed during ultrasonography. An uneven contour and parenchymal masses in the neoplastic kidney were detected by ultrasonographic imaging of the cat

We report the case of a 17-year-old male with Seckel syndrome and horseshoe kidneys which had a 7 mm kidney stone in the lower pole calyx of the right moiety. The patient had a history of rotoscoliosis with 60° dextroconvex curvature and hepatic steatosis. Attempted ureteroscopy was unsuccessful due to stone location and anatomy. Percutaneous nephrolithotomy was ultimately required. This case highlights the difficulties of endoscopic treatments of renal calculi in patients with abnormal renal anatomy and dysmorphia. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of nephrolithiasis in a pati

From September 1988 to April 1989, 400 patients with stones in the calyx (40%), in the renal pelvis (45%), in the ureter (15%) and with staghorn calculi (5%) underwent shock wave treatment. In the majority of patients therapy was carried out with general anesthesia. Disintegration was achieves in 95% of stones in the kidney and 44% of stones localized in the ureter following "in situ" ESWL. The ureteroscopy and stone push-up with replacement into the renal ampulla was performed in 56% of ureteral calculi. The average number of impulses to achieve disintegration was 1850. In 20 patients were ne

INTRODUCTION: To date, little information exists regarding urogenital diseases in those who have been exposed to sulfur mustard (SM). We report the self-reported history of urologic conditions and findings on physical examination in a group of male veterans 19 to 26 years after exposed to high-dose sulfur mustard.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data on urologic health conditions of a nationwide health survey were used in this study. This survey included all 289 Iranian male veterans who had been exposed to high doses of SM between 1983 and 1989. Demographic data, exposure-related data, health status,

Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XPN) is an uncommon, but not rare, type of bacterial infection of the kidneys. Malignancies originating within the renal pelvis are uncommon. We report a case of XPN associated with a transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) of the renal pelvis in a 70-year-old woman. The pathogenesis of carcinoma of the renal pelvis in the presence of XPN is related to obstruction, chronic inflammation, and mechanical irritation caused by calculi. In the case reported here, obstruction was due to a concomitant TCC of the ureter without the presence of calculi. A review of the twel

BACKGROUND: Kidney disease is a growing non-AIDS-related comorbidity among people living with HIV (PLWH). Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) can result in proximal tubulopathy and acute tubular injury, whereas atazanavir/ritonavir (ATV/r) can cause interstitial nephritis and renal stones, both of which can lead to chronic kidney disease.
OBJECTIVES: To examine the relationship between second-line combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) and the risk of kidney disease and morphological changes among PLWH in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
METHOD: A cross-sectional study of adult PLWH receiving TDF-

In 6 patients (9 kidneys) irrigation with Solution G in the renal pelvis was performed for the dissolution of their infectious stones. Staghorn calculi larger than 30 mm in diameter were observed in all patients. In two kidneys all stones were dissolved and the rest were dissolved into small fragments that constituted no problem in those kidneys. Irrigation was done with no major side effects or complications. The dissolution of infectious stones with Solution G is another possible treatment that could be first chosen among percutaneous nephrolithotripsy, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy

Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGP) is a rare, severe form of chronic kidney infection that mimics renal malignancies, often leading to diagnostic challenges. We present the case of a 36-year-old woman with a 2-month history of progressive lower back pain, fever, and weight loss. Imaging revealed left renal enlargement with multiple low-attenuation areas and large staghorn calculi, suggestive of XGP. Middle-aged women are primarily affected by recurrent urinary tract infections and renal calculi, leading to extensive renal destruction. Characteristic "bear paw" sign on computed tomography

Association of chronic cholecystitis and pyelonephritis as well as associated formation of calculi are the cause of prolonged course of the disease, resistance to antibacterial therapy, frequent exacerbations. For his reason the authors recommend detailed examinations of the kidneys in patients with chronic cholecystitis for early diagnosis of their pathology and institution of adequate treatment.

A 60-year-old man visited our hospital with complaints of micturition pain and interruption of urinary stream. X-ray examinations were performed, showing no bladder and urethral stone. However, KUB revealed bilateral multiple renal stones. Excretory urography showed a horseshoe kidney and a concentration of the contrast medium in the ectatic tubules at the pyramidal apices. Calculi were also located in these ectatic tubules. Thus, we considered that this was a very rare case of medullary sponge disease associated with horseshoe kidney. So far there has been no case report of medullary sponge d

We report on our first 6 months' experience with the extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripter (ESWL). During this period, 410 treatments were given to 350 kidneys and ureters. Our series was characterized by a particularly high proportion (40%) of multiple and large calculi and included 25 complete staghorns. The latter required multiple treatments (up to five), but no adjunct percutaneous nephrolithotomies were used in this series. A percutaneous nephrostomy was inserted in 20 cases. Thirty-six ureteric calculi above the pelvic level were treated in situ, with 95% success. The presence of a ure

Traumatic injury of a hydronephrotic kidney is uncommon, and extrusion of calculi beyond the renal capsule is exceptionally rare. We describe a middle-aged man with severe left hydronephrosis who sustained a low-impact fall, resulting in an American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST) grade IV renal laceration. Contrast-enhanced CT revealed urinary extravasation, inflammatory urothelial enhancement consistent with uretero-pyelitis, and multiple displaced calculi within the retroperitoneum. A double-J stent was inserted after the initial scan. Follow-up CT demonstrated a well-circumscr

Urolithiasis is quite prevalent in Satpura belt of Central India. Forty five children with urolithiasis were studied in Jawahar Medical Foundations Hospital, Dhule, Maharashtra over a period of three years. The mean age was 7.1 +/- 3.2 (range 18 months-15 years). The chief presenting complaints were dysuria and lower abdominal pain. The physical, laboratory and radiographic findings were evaluated. Calculi were located in the bladder (80%), urethra (9%), kidney (6.6%) and ureter (4.4%). Calculi were mainly composed of calcium oxalate (65.7%) and calcium phosphate (34.3%). The predominant urina

INTRODUCTION: Urolithiasis is frequently followed up with a low-dose computed tomography of the kidneys ureters and bladder (LD-CTKUB) with doses typically less than 3 millisieverts. Although X-ray is a lower dose (0.5-1.1 mSv) alternative for follow up, it has lower diagnostic accuracy and is limited to radiopaque calculi. This study aims to compare the diagnostic accuracy of sub-millisievert ultra-low dose CT (ULD-CTKUB) against X-ray KUB for the follow up of urolithiasis when both are compared against the standard of care of a low-dose CT KUB (LD-CTKUB).
METHODS: This prospective study inc

PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare the outcomes of vacuum-assisted dedusting lithotripsy (VADL) using flexible vacuum-assisted ureteral access sheath (FV-UAS) versus traditional flexible ureteroscopic lithotripsy (fURL) in patients with kidney or proximal ureteral calculi less than 3 cm in size.
METHODS: A total of 371 patients who successfully underwent fURL treatment were enrolled. These patients were divided into traditional fURL group and VADL group. Outcomes of both groups were compared using 1:1 propensity score-matched analysis. Stratified analyses based on stone size and location we
