Transmitted resistance to recent cephalosporin antibiotics of the third generation was first proved in 1983 by the authors. Approximately five years later the authors revealed during systematic monitoring of bacterial strains resistant to cephtazidime, cephtriaxone and cephotaxim also transmitted resistance to these and other more recent beta-lactam antibiotics in Czechoslovakia. The authors advocate rational use of new cephalosporins and other beta-lactams (e. g. aztreonam) as reserve antibiotics.

A number of mutants of Caulobacter crescentus CB15 resistant ot ampicillin were isolated. The mutants differred in their resistance to several beta-lactam antibiotics. No differences in composition of the penicillin-binding proteins of the mutants compared to the parental strain, or in the affinity of these proteins to penicillin or ampicillin were found. The mutants were found to differ from the parent and also in many cases from each other in outer membrane protein composition.

beta-Lactam antibiotics can induce severe neutropenia by a hitherto unknown mechanism. Fifty cases of beta-lactam antibiotic-induced neutropenia (less than 1,000 neutrophils/mm3) from 17 hospitals were analyzed and compared with 140 literature cases. The incidence of neutropenia was 5%-greater than 15% in patients treated for greater than or equal to 10 days with large doses of any beta-lactam antibiotic but less than 0.1% with shorter duration of therapy. Six common clinical situations in infants and children are discussed from the point of view of standard therapeutic regimens: neonatal sepsis and meningitis; febrile episodes in neutropenia; bacterial meningitis; acute pulmonary exacerbations of cystic fibrosis; pneumonia, bone and joint infections, and cellulitis in patients less than four years of age; and intra-abdominal sepsis. Potential or actual problems with these therapeutic regimens and newer therapeutic options are outlined.

Samples from concentrated aqueous solutions of β-lactam antibiotics were examined by gel filtration. The eluates were monitored by ultraviolet (uv) absorption and by passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) in guinea-pigs sensitized with appropriate antiserum raised in rabbits. The appearance of uv absorbing material, giving a positive PCA reaction, in fractions from the high molecular weight regions of the eluates from gel filtration of aged solutions was taken as evidence of antigenic polymer formation.
