INTRODUCTION: Glycogen storage disease V (GSDV, McArdle disease) and GSDVII (Tarui disease) are the most common of the rare disorders of glycogen metabolism. Both are associated with low lactate levels on exercise. Our aim was to find out whether lactate response associated with exercise testing could distinguish between these disorders.
METHODS: Two siblings with Tarui disease, two patients with McArdle disease and eight healthy controls were tested on spiroergometric exercise tests with follow-up of venous lactate and ammonia.
RESULTS: A late increase of lactate about three times the basal

BACKGROUND: Blood profile testing is commonly used to monitor herd health status, diagnose disorders, and predict the risk of diseases in cows and calves, with subsequent optimization the production of dairy herds. By understanding the physiological ranges of serum metabolites relative to age, lactation stage, and the sampling time in healthy cows and calves, the dairy practitioners can accurately diagnose abnormalities with a blood test. The effect of sampling time on the variation of serum metabolites within 24 h were evaluated in 83 cattle. All animals were originated from a dairy herd, whe

In this article, we review how the knowledge of the pathophysiology of panic disorder has expanded, with special emphasis on laboratory models using lactate and carbon dioxide challenges. Experiments in the late 1960s revealed that lactate infusion can induce panic attacks. A prominent feature of these attacks is hyperventilation. Because lactate infusion induces a metabolic alkalosis, one would rather expect a compensatory hypoventilation. For years hyperventilation was thought to be causally linked to panic, but it has since been proven to be a symptom rather than a cause of panic attacks. S

Physiologic changes that occur in the breast during pregnancy and lactation create challenges for breast cancer screening and diagnosis. Despite these challenges, imaging evaluation should not be deferred, because delayed diagnosis of pregnancy-associated breast cancer contributes to poor outcomes. Both screening and diagnostic imaging can be safely performed using protocols based on age, breast cancer risk, and whether the patient is pregnant or lactating. US is the preferred initial imaging modality for the evaluation of clinical symptoms in pregnant women, followed by mammography if the US

Mounting evidence suggests the impact of maternal diet on the health of offspring. We reported that maternal diet of sulforaphane glucosinolate (SGS) could prevent behavioral abnormalities in offspring after maternal immune activation. The present study was designed to investigate whether the dietary intake of SGS during pregnancy and lactation influences the composition of gut microbiota in the offspring. The dietary intake of SGS during pregnancy and lactation caused significant changes in the α-diversity and β-diversity of gut microbiota in 3-week-old offspring (SGS-3W group) and 10-week-ol

A growing body of evidence demonstrates that an imbalance in the intensive communication between gut microbiota and the host might be associated with immune-related disorders such as multiple sclerosis. This study set out to determine whether antibiotic treatment during pregnancy and lactation can affect the onset and severity of clinical symptoms and inflammatory responses in offspring with experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE; a mouse model of multiples sclerosis). Female C57BL/6 mice received antibiotics or vehicles during pregnancy and lactation, then their offspring were induced

Alcohol ingestion by female rats during pregnancy and/or lactation leads to developmental anomalies of different organ systems, retardation and immune system impairment in their offspring. In humans, these disorders are termed foetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), or foetal alcohol effect (FAE) if abnormalities are of lesser degree. The study materials consisted of brain, liver and spleen samples collected ten days post partum from neonatal rats born to dams treated with 12% alcohol at a dose of 6 g/kg body mass during pregnancy or during pregnancy and/or lactation. Microglial and dendritic cells wer

Studies were undertaken to determine the effect of expressing small volumes of breast fluid (less than 3.0 ml) on the progressive changes in concentrations of lactose, proteins, and electrolytes in the mammary secretions of four nonpuerperal women with galactorrhea and two nonpuerperal women who artificially induced lactation by breast hyperstimulation. The changes in the concentration of the milk constituents in the mammary secretion of these women are compared to the levels in colostrum, transitional and mature milk obtained from normal lactationg women. In one woman galactorrhea was associa

Alcohol consumption during pregnancy and lactation remains a significant global issue. Preventive policies have proven insufficient, and consumption rates remain high, mainly due to a lack of awareness, the misconception that only high alcohol intake harms the fetus, inconsistent medical advice, and pre-existing alcohol use disorders. Alcohol consumption is linked to child harm during critical stages of development. Using a recently published model of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) developed by our group, we analyzed brain changes in mothers who consumed alcohol during pregnancy and la

Increasing evidence supports the existence of fetal-originated adult diseases. Recent research indicates that the intrauterine environment affects the fetal hypothalamic energy intake center. Inulin is a probiotic that can moderate metabolic disorders, but whether maternal inulin intervention confers long-term metabolic benefits to lipid metabolism in offspring in their adult lives and the mechanism involved are unknown. Here, we used a maternal overnutrition model that was induced by excess energy intake before and during pregnancy and lactation and maternal inulin intervention was performed

BACKGROUND: Hypernatremic dehydration in neonates is a potentially devastating condition. Recent reports have identified breast-feeding malnutrition as a key factor in its pathophysiology.
METHODS: Using a theoretical framework for breast-feeding kinetics, a retrospective chart review of all neonates less than 28 days of age who were seen at either British Columbia's Children's Hospital or the Vancouver Breastfeeding Centre between 1991-1994 was conducted to identify and classify possible causes of breast-feeding malnutrition among neonates who developed hypernatremic dehydration.
RESULTS: T

Holstein Friesian (HF) is the highest-performing dairy breed worldwide. However, this breed is prone to suffer from health disorders and infertility due to metabolic instability. The aim of the study was to use the metabolic differences between to breed, German HF and German Simmental (SI), for discussion of the biological impact of well-known and novel pathways and their respective indicators. Therefore, a targeted metabolomics approach combined with an examination of classical clinical chemistry using plasma samples was used to describe the metabolic status 42 days before expected calving an
