Effect of long-term, peroral administration of sugar alcohols on man.

Certain sugar alcohols (polyols), notably mannitol, sorbitol and xylitol have gained use in food manufacturing for sweetening and technical purposes. These compounds are natural polyols that occur in small amounts in animals and plants. Some sugar alcohols, like xylitol, appear as normal intermediates in the carbohydrate metabolism. Exogenous mannitol, sorbitol and xylitol are metabolized in the human body along pre-existing, physiological pathways. Moderate doses of least xylitol and sorbitol are almost totally absorbed and metabolized, chiefly in the liver cells, thereby eventually contribut

Association of DGAT1 and POU1F1 Gene Polymorphisms With the Milk Traits in the Cross-Bred Hamdani Sheep Bred Under Extensive Management.

BACKGROUND: Milk production and composition are affected by genetic and environmental factors. Among key genetic regulators, the POU1F1 and DGAT1 genes play significant roles. POU1F1 affects pituitary gland functions and hormone secretion, indirectly impacting milk production. DGAT1 is crucial for milk fat synthesis. Understanding genetic variations in these genes can enhance breeding strategies for improved milk yield and quality. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the relationship between POU1F1 and DGAT1 genes and milk composition in cross-bred Hamdani sheep. METHODS: Blood and milk sampl

A personalized management approach in disorders of the irritable bowel syndrome spectrum.

Symptoms of the disorders across the irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) spectrum include several different, usually postprandial, abdominal complaints. Up to date, dietary treatments of the IBS have neither been personalized nor diagnosed with sufficient scientific evidence. They have mostly been treated using 'one-size-fits-all' approaches. Such include exclusion diets, a low fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols diet, and gluten-free diets, lactose-free diets, a diet recommended by the UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, and a wheat-free diet.

Etiology of Neonatal Bacterial Meningitis and Their Antibiotic Susceptibility Pattern at the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Ethiopia: A Seven-Year Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Meningitis, which is mostly caused by infectious agents, occurs more commonly during the first month of life. Bacterial meningitis is an important source of mortality and morbidity, especially in neonates of resource-limited countries. We aimed to determine the prevalence and etiological agents of bacterial meningitis and their antibiotic susceptibility pattern in neonates at the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital. METHODS: We collected retrospective data from bacteriological results of cerebrospinal fluid of meningitis suspected neonates from 2013 to 2019. Sa

Development of a Risk Score for Extraintestinal Manifestations of Coeliac Disease.

The aim of this study was to identify indicators of coeliac disease (CD) in an Australian cohort, beyond the known gastrointestinal symptoms. Individuals were recruited from the general population and at the 2014 Gluten Free Expo in Sydney and in Melbourne, Australia. Data on their current health status including medical history, diagnosis for CD, and family history were collected. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify independent predictors of CD. A weighted risk score system was then generated for the independent predictors, and a risk score was calculated for each individua

A systematic review and meta-analysis of the effects of pasteurization on milk vitamins, and evidence for raw milk consumption and other health-related outcomes.

Pasteurization of milk ensures safety for human consumption by reducing the number of viable pathogenic bacteria. Although the public health benefits of pasteurization are well established, pro-raw milk advocate organizations continue to promote raw milk as "nature's perfect food." Advocacy groups' claims include statements that pasteurization destroys important vitamins and that raw milk consumption can prevent and treat allergies, cancer, and lactose intolerance. A systematic review and meta-analysis was completed to summarize available evidence for these selected claims. Forty studies asses

Properties of lipophilic matrix tablets containing phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride prepared by hot-melt extrusion.

The objective of the present study was to investigate the influence of formulation factors on the physical properties of hot-melt extruded granules and compressed tablets containing wax as a thermal binder/retarding agent, and to compare the properties of granules and tablets with those prepared by a high-shear melt granulation (MG) method. Powder blends containing phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride, Precirol and various excipients were extruded in a single-screw extruder at open-end discharge conditions. The extrudates were then passed through a 14-mesh screen to form granules. The extrusion c

Does primary lactase deficiency reduce bone mineral density in postmenopausal women? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

UNLABELLED: Postmenopausal osteoporosis is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. The role of primary lactase deficiency (PLD) in its development is not clear. This meta-analysis showed that PLD is a risk factor for osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. These women need special attention in terms of screening for osteoporosis and its prevention. INTRODUCTION: Postmenopausal osteoporosis is an important predictor of bone fractures. The purpose of the study was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of association of PLD and bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women.

Existence of irritable bowel syndrome supported by factor analysis of symptoms in two community samples.

To determine whether bowel symptoms covary in a pattern consistent with the existence of irritable bowel as a distinct syndrome, bowel symptom questionnaires from 2 independent samples were factor analyzed. Samples consisted of 351 18-40-yr-old women who visited Planned Parenthood clinics for contraception and 149 18-89-yr-old women recruited through church women's societies. Factor analysis of 23 bowel symptoms identified 4 factors (clusters of symptoms that were correlated with each other) in both samples. The factor accounting for the most variance in both samples included relief of pain wi

The Diverse Forms of Lactose Intolerance and the Putative Linkage to Several Cancers.

Lactase-phlorizin hydrolase (LPH) is a membrane glycoprotein and the only β-galactosidase of the brush border membrane of the intestinal epithelium. Besides active transcription, expression of the active LPH requires different maturation steps of the polypeptide through the secretory pathway, including N- and O-glycosylation, dimerization and proteolytic cleavage steps. The inability to digest lactose due to insufficient lactase activity results in gastrointestinal symptoms known as lactose intolerance. In this review, we will concentrate on the structural and functional features of LPH protei

ON THE MECHANISM OF MILK SECRETION : THE INFLUENCE OF INSULIN AND PHLORIDZIN.

The four types of experiments on milk secretion herein described really fall into one general class so far as the physiological effects produced are concerned. Starvation lowers the blood sugar and raises the osmotic pressure of the blood. The experiment using parathyroid hormone with or without starvation may have its effects interpreted as simply due to starvation since 1000 units of this hormone produced no visible effects on the blood calcium or milk constituents different from those of starvation. Since insulin produces a marked and rapid drop in blood sugar it too may be looked upon as a

Breastfeeding after pituitary resection: support for a theory of autocrine control of milk supply?

A 20-year-old woman with a history of pituitary resection complicated by diabetes insipidus was able to fully breastfeed for three months despite apparent hyposecretion of pituitary hormones. This case report adds to the growing body of evidence that control of milk production shifts from endocrine to autocrine control shortly after delivery. Autocrine control allows efficient regulation of milk supply to match the needs of the infant. A recently discovered factor in human milk that inhibits lactose and casein synthesis in vitro is believed to be responsible for local, short term control of mi

Cows' milk protein intolerance: a possible association with gastroenteritis, lactose intolerance, and IgA deficiency.

Twenty-five children with cows' milk protein intolerance were studied. Twenty had presented with an illness clinically indistinguishable from infantile gastroenteritis; an enteropathogenic Escherichia coli was isolated from the stools in two children, and in six another member of the family simultaneously developed acute diarrhoea and vomiting. Twenty-three children had lactose intolerance secondary to cows' milk protein intolerance. Eight out of 20 children were found to be partially IgA deficient. An acute attack of gastroenteritis, in damaging the small mucosa, may act as a triggering mecha

[Lactose and gluten intolerance: which to suscept?].

Lactose intolerance affects millions of people world-wide and should be suspected specially when evaluating gastrointestinal symptoms in ethnic populations in which it is prevalent. Fortunately, once a diagnosis is made, management is fairly straightforward. The authors discuss symptoms and methods of detection and offer their recommendations for helping patients with this common disorder. Coeliac disease is the end result of 3 processes that culminate in intestinal damage: genetic predisposition, environmental factors, and immunological based inflammation. Epidemiological studies based on ser

Major colorectal cancer aetiological hypotheses do not explain mortality trends among Maori and non-Maori New Zealanders.

New Zealand colorectal cancer mortality rates are presented for the period 1947-1980. Mortality has been increasing and is now the highest in the world for both males and females in the age range 35-64; indeed New Zealand mortality rates for those aged 35-44 are approximately twice those of other countries with high mortality. By contrast, colorectal cancer mortality rates among Maoris, the indigenous New Zealanders of Polynesian descent, have been decreasing so that they are now less than half the non-Maori mortality rates. These findings cannot be explained by ethnic differences in consumpti

The improvement of hypertension by probiotics: effects on cholesterol, diabetes, renin, and phytoestrogens.

Probiotics are live organisms that are primarily used to improve gastrointestinal disorders such as diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, lactose intolerance, and to inhibit the excessive proliferation of pathogenic intestinal bacteria. However, recent studies have suggested that probiotics could have beneficial effects beyond gastrointestinal health, as they were found to improve certain metabolic disorders such as hypertension. Hypertension is caused by various factors and the predominant causes include an increase in cholesterol levels, incidence of diabetes, inconsistent modula
