The term blueberry muffin baby was initially coined by pediatricians to describe cutaneous manifestations observed in newborns infected with rubella during the American epidemic of the 1960s. These children had generalized hemorrhagic purpuric eruptions that on histopathology showed dermal erythropoiesis. Since then, congenital infections comprising the TORCH syndrome (toxoplasmosis, other, rubella, cytomegalovirus, herpes) and hematologic dyscrasias have classically been associated with blueberry muffin-like lesion.

A 7-year-old boy had undergone kidney transplantation for chronic renal failure secondary to bilateral renal hypoplasia. Haemophagocytic syndrome (HPS) is a fulminant, often fatal, systemic illness that occurs in association with infection and malignancy. We provide the first report of HPS that heralded a primary effusion lymphoma (PEL), a rare neoplasm linked to Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus. Infection-related hemophagocytic syndrome was originally described in viral processes by Risdall in 1979. Recent reports have suggested associations of this syndrome with bacterial, parasitic and fungal infections. It occurs generally in immunosuppressed patients. To clarify the correlation of cytokine level with the severity and prognosis of children with the hemophagocytic syndrome, we analyzed serum interleukin-1 (IL-1) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) levels in 26 children with either the virus-associated hemophagocytic syndrome (VAHS, n = 12) or malignant histiocytosis (MH, n = 14). Benign tumors and malignant primary or metastatic neoplasms of the vertebral column are rare in childhood. Radiographic changes are sometimes detected by routine investigations since no clinical symptoms are present. The type of tumor can only rarely be specified from the radiographic changes. OBJECTIVE: To study the clinicopathologic features and differential diagnosis of extranodal Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) of the upper respiratory tract.
METHODS: The clinical, pathologic and immunohistochemical features of 10 cases of RDD were evaluated.

Histiocytic disorders are a spectrum of rare diseases characterised by the accumulation of macrophage-, dendritic cell-, or monocyte-differentiated cells in various tissues and organs.
