Langerhans cells (LCs) are dendritic cells localized in epidermis and mucosal tissues, where they are responsible for triggering the immune response. To study LCs in the oral epithelium, organotypic cultures were prepared using gingival explants. Oesophageal Langerhans' cells (LC) are bone marrow-derived dendritic cells situated suprabasally in most stratified squamous epithelia, such as the epidermis and the epithelium of oesophageal mucosa. LC function as antigen-presenting cells. Associated with relatively numerous intra-epithelial lymphocytes present in the normal state in oesophageal mucosa, they play a major role in the immunologic defense system of the oesophagus. Structure and role of LC are summarized in this review. Moreover, the implications of LC in different pathologic oesophageal reactions are discussed.

Hyperplastic lesions of the oral mucosa such as leukoplakia and oral lichen planus can eventually develop into squamous cell carcinomas. Sections of ethanol-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue specimens from human vagina and exocervix were stained by an indirect immunofluorescence method with a rabbit antiserum to HLA-DR antigens. A specific staining of cells having a dendritic appearance were seen. The cells were randomly distributed, mainly in the parabasal cell-layer of the stratified squamous epithelium. The number of dendritic cells was 1-3% of all cells in the cervical epithelium and 1-5% of the cells in the vaginal epithelium. Most probably these cells are Langerhans' cells.
