Language comprehension in ape and child.

Previous investigations of the linguistic capacities of apes have focused on the ape's ability to produce words, and there has been little concern for comprehension. By contrast, it is increasingly recognized that comprehension precedes production in the language development of normal human children, and it may indeed guide production. It has been demonstrated that some species can process speech sounds categorically in a manner similar to that observed in humans. Consequently, it should be possible for such species to comprehend language if they have the cognitive capacity to understand word-…

Speech and language therapy for aphasia.

More information into the natural course of dysphasia has improved information related to prognosis. An increased understanding regarding the underlying complex basis of language and communication leads to interesting intellectual debate and confronts the previously more simplistic approaches to assessment and remediation without necessarily assisting by replacing these with coherent and practical methods of management of this disability in context.

Clinical safety of large language model responses to matched patient-language and clinician-language Turkish obstetric and gynecologic triage prompts: a model-blinded paired-scenario study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether presenting matched obstetric and gynecologic triage scenarios as patient-language prompts rather than clinician-language prompts affects expert-rated clinical confidence and the clinical safety of LLM-generated advice. METHODS: Thirty obstetric and gynecologic scenarios were presented in matched clinician-language and patient-language Turkish formats to four LLMs. Five specialists independently evaluated 240 responses, generating 1,200 ratings. The primary outcome was the Global Clinical Confidence Score (GCCS; 0-2); five secondary outcomes were rated on 1-5 sc…

Which Measures Better Discriminate Language Minority Bilingual Children With and Without Developmental Language Disorder? A Study Testing a Combined Protocol of First and Second Language Assessment.

Purpose This study aimed to assess a protocol for the evaluation of developmental language disorder (DLD) in language minority bilingual children (LMBC). The specific aims were (a) to test group differences, (b) to evaluate the discriminant validity of single measures included in the protocol, and (c) to define which model of combined variables had the best results in terms of efficacy and efficiency. Method Two groups of LMBC were involved, one with typical development (n = 35) selected from mainstream schools and one with DLD (n = 20). The study protocol included the collection of demographi…

Language proficiency drives listening-related fatigue in those who communicate in English as their second language.

Individuals who listen to speech in their second language ('L2 listeners') are disproportionately impacted by adverse acoustic conditions; a phenomenon coined the 'non-native speech-in-noise disadvantage'. Evidence also suggests that L2 listening taxes cognitive resources to a greater extent than in L1 listeners. Very little, however, is known about the longer-term consequences of this sustained cognitive engagement. Listening-related fatigue refers to the daily life subjective experience of extreme tiredness from effortful listening. The current study recruited a large sample of L2-English li…

Structural language profiles in children with autism spectrum disorder and developmental language disorder: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) are both associated with language difficulties, yet the extent to which they share common structural language profiles remains unclear. Previous research has reported both overlap and divergence across phonological, morphosyntactic, semantic, and narrative domains, creating challenges for differential diagnosis and intervention planning. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aimed to synthesize empirical evidence comparing structural language abilities in children with ASD and DLD and to identify areas of converg…

Effects of Native Language and Exposure to Foreign Language on Categorization and Discrimination of Vowel Duration and Lexical Tone.

Native speakers generally outperform non-native speakers in identifying and discriminating speech sounds. Yet, the categorical perception of … on and in associated reaction times compared with the other groups. The results suggest that native language does not influence vowel perception uniformly across tone and duration features. Moreover, exposure to a foreign language in adulthood may, at least initially, lead to categorization preferences that diverge from, rather than align with, those of na …

Evidence-Based Interventions for Young Dual Language Learners With or at Risk of Language Impairment: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Early intervention professionals, including speech-language pathologists, teachers, and policymakers, face significant challenges in understanding and supporting young dual language learners who have or are at risk of language impairment. The existing research evidence base is fragmented and relatively sparse, and the overall extent and depth of interventions available for different language pairings (the home language and English) remains largely unknown. PURPOSE: This scoping review maps language interventions for dual language learners aged 3 to 9 years with, or at risk of, lan…

A Longitudinal Investigation of the Relations Between Emergent Bilingual Children's Language Experience and Bilingual Language Outcomes.

PURPOSE: This study aims to characterize Spanish-English emergent bilingual (EB) children's language experiences and to examine how these experiences contribute to their bilingual development over a 2-year period. All EB children were enrolled in dual language immersion (DLI) programs. This setting provides a unique opportunity to explore how bilingual language experiences shape bilingual language development across time. METHOD: Fifty-seven Spanish-English EB children participated in the study. Bilingual language skills were assessed at two time points: Time 1 (2019) and Time 2 (2021). Parti…

Morphological Awareness: Connecting Language Foundations and Academic Literacy Success for Students With Language and Literacy Deficits.

PURPOSE: For school-age students with language and literacy deficits (LLD), such as those with developmental language disorder (DLD) and/or dyslexia, literacy challenges can affect reading comprehension, written language, and overall academic success. Researchers have established that instruction in morphological awareness, especially with a phonological, orthographic, semantic, and syntactic focus, results in positive reading and writing outcomes. The purpose of this clinical focus article is to provide evidence for a multilinguistic literacy intervention approach grounded in morphological aw…

Cross-language generalization of language treatment in multilingual people with post-stroke aphasia: A meta-analysis.

Studies on the efficacy of language treatment for multilingual people with post-stroke aphasia and its generalization to untreated languages have produced mixed results. We conducted a systematic review and a meta-analysis to examine within- and cross-language treatment effects and the variables that affect them. We searched PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and Google Scholar (February 2020; January 2023), identifying 40 studies reporting on 1573 effect sizes from 85 individuals. We synthesized effect sizes for treatment outcomes using a multi-level model to correct for multiple observations from the…

The Telephone Language Screener (TLS): standardization of a novel telephone-based screening test for language impairment.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed at developing and standardizing the Telephone Language Screener (TLS), a novel, disease-nonspecific, telephone-based screening test for language disorders. METHODS: The TLS was developed in strict pursuance to the current psycholinguistic standards. It comprises nine tasks assessing phonological, lexical-semantic and morpho-syntactic components, as well as an extra Backward Digit Span task. The TLS was administered to 480 healthy participants (HPs), along with the Telephone-based Semantic Verbal Fluency (t-SVF) test and a Telephone-based Composite Language Index (…

Estimating Early Language Input in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children With the Language Access Profile Tool.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to describe the Language Access Profile Tool (LAPT) and its psychometric properties with the aim of evaluating its suitability as an alternative to the deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) Language Exposure Assessment Tool (D-LEAT) in clinical practice with DHH children age 12 years and younger. METHOD: We administered both the LAPT and D-LEAT to the caregivers of 105 DHH children 12 years old and younger from across the United States, 40% of whom were interviewed again after a delay of at least 1 month. Each interview resulted in a child-specific estimate of t…

The Association of Dyslexia and Developmental Speech and Language Disorder Candidate Genes with Reading and Language Abilities in Adults.

Reading and language abilities are critical for educational achievement and success in adulthood. Variation in these traits is highly heritable, but the underlying genetic architecture is largely undiscovered. Genetic studies of reading and language skills traditionally focus on children with developmental disorders; however, much larger unselected adult samples are available, increasing power to identify associations with specific genetic variants of small effect size. We introduce an Australian adult population cohort (41.7-73.2 years of age, N = 1505) in which we obtained data using validat…

Referential Cohesion in the Narratives of Bilingual and Monolingual Children With Typically Developing Language and With Specific Language Impairment.

Purpose The study explores referential cohesion in the narratives of bilingual preschool children with typical language development (TLD) and with specific language impairment (SLI). Referential cohesion requires integration of multiple discourse factors and is expected to pose a challenge for children with bilingual SLI due to weak proficiency in both languages. Method Narratives were elicited from 45 bilinguals speaking Russian as the home language (L1) and Hebrew as the societal language (L2; 15 with SLI), 20 Hebrew-speaking monolinguals (10 with SLI), and 20 Russian-speaking monolinguals (…

Diminished brain responses to second-language words are linked with native-language literacy skills in dyslexia.

Dyslexia is characterized by poor reading skills, yet often also difficulties in second-language learning. The differences between native- and second-language speech processing and the establishment of new brain representations for spoken second language in dyslexia are not, however, well understood. We used recordings of the mismatch negativity component of event-related potential to determine possible differences between the activation of long-term memory representations for spoken native- and second-language word forms in Finnish-speaking 9-11-year-old children with or without dyslexia, stu…

Pragmatics of language and theory of mind in children with dyslexia with associated language difficulties or nonverbal learning disabilities.

The present study aims to find empirical evidence of deficits in linguistic pragmatic skills and theory of mind (ToM) in children with dyslexia with associated language difficulties or nonverbal learning disabilities (NLD), when compared with a group of typically developing (TD) children matched for age and gender. Our results indicate that children with dyslexia perform less well than TD children in most of the tasks measuring pragmatics of language, and in one of the tasks measuring ToM. In contrast, children with NLD generally performed better than the dyslexia group, and performed signific…

The rehabilitative effects on written language of a combined language and parietal dual-tDCS treatment in a stroke case.

In this paper we report the effect of a combined transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and speech language therapy on linguistic deficits following left brain damage in a stroke case. We show that simultaneous electrical excitatory stimulation to the left and inhibitory stimulation to the right parietal regions (dual-tDCS) affected writing and reading rehabilitation, enhancing speech therapy outcomes. The results of a comparison with healthy controls showed that application of dual-tDCS could improve, in particular, sub-lexical transcoding and, specifically, the reading of non-words w…
