The distribution of nutrients such as Na, Cl, K, P, S, and Ca was investigated by energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDXA) on bulk-frozen mouse muscles infected with Trichinella pseudospiralis. In an attempt to gain information as to whether muscle larvae would modify the element status within muscles of their host. Significant increases in phosphorus concentrations within nurse cells and internal cells of the larva, e.g., the somatic muscle cells and the stichocytes, were shown. This could reflect changes in the energy metabolism and/or in the turnover of nucleic acids of the nurse cell. …

Nociception is the sensory modality by which animals sense stimuli associated with injury or potential tissue damage. When Drosophila larvae encounter a noxious thermal, chemical, or mechanical stimulus, they perform a stereotyped rolling behavior. These noxious stimuli are detected by polymodal nociceptor neurons that tile the larval epidermis. Although several types of sensory neurons feed into the nociceptive behavioral output, the highly branched class IV multidendritic arborization neurons are the most critical. At the molecular level, Drosophila nociception shares many conserved features…

Chironomid larvae (red midge larvae) are often used by aquarists as fish food. Their hemoglobins can cause IgE-mediated allergic diseases in exposed and unexposed people. The aim of this study was to find out the prevalence of positive skin tests to chironomids in patients suffering from rhinitis and/or bronchial asthma in Ciudad Real (Spain). A total of 465 patients were submitted to skin prick tests with chironomids in addition to common inhalant allergens. The patients with positive skin prick test (wheal > or = 3 mm) to these larvae answered a questionnaire. Skin prick tests with Acarus si…

In cryopreservation studies with third-stage larvae of Dictyocaulus viviparus, best results were achieved by incubating larvae in 0.05% NaOCl at 37 degrees C to remove the sheath, followed by cooling at a rate of 1 degree C min per min down to about 0 degree C. After an equilibration time of 10 min at +4 degrees C with or without 4% polyethylene glycol-400 as cryoprotectant, samples were frozen at the same cooling rate to an intermediate temperature of -20 degrees C, maintained at this temperature for 10 min and finally plunged into liquid nitrogen for storage. Three groups of 3 calves were in…

Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) is one of numerous skin diseases that occur in British military personnel on deployments to the tropics and sub-tropics. It is typically managed by military primary healthcare services, but diagnostic uncertainty or unavailability of anti-helminthic medication may prompt referral to UK Role 4 healthcare services. Cases of CLM seen at the UK Role 4 Military Infectious Diseases & Tropical Medicine Service from 2005 to 2020 were identified and their case notes were reviewed to identify learning and discussion points. There were 12 cases identified, of which five came…

Here, we report an unusual case of invasive gnathostomiasis in a returning traveller, with a shifting pattern of relapsing cutaneous disease. The previously fit and well 32-year-old man first presented with serpiginous, pruriginous erythematous tracks characteristic of cutaneous larva migrans shortly after returning from South-East Asia. He was systemically well with no other symptoms. After ivermectin therapy, he re-presented with respiratory symptoms, peripheral eosinophilia and transient pulmonary infiltrates; the classic triad of Löffler's syndrome associated with invasive helminth infecti…

BACKGROUND: Because of the rise in community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA), presentations to the emergency department for the evaluation of cutaneous abscesses have risen dramatically over the past 2 decades. Soft tissue point of care ultrasound (POCUS) differentiates abscess from cellulitis, determines the size and shape, and characterizes the contents of the abscess. It has been shown to improve medical decision-making and therefore the emergency management of cutaneous abscesses over physical examination alone.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of an unusual no

Roundworms of the genus Baylisascaris are natural parasites primarily of wild carnivores, and they can occasionally cause infection in humans and animals. Infection results in visceral larva migrans and/or neural larva migrans, which can be severe or fatal in some animals. Recently, Baylisascaris nematodes isolated from kinkajous (Potos flavus) and previously referred to as Baylisascaris procyonis were renamed as Baylisascaris potosis; however, data regarding the pathogenicity of B. potosis towards animals and humans are lacking. In the present study, we experimentally infected squirrel monkey…

An incidental, asymptomatic, focal inflammatory lesion was detected in brain cerebrum of an approximately 6-year-old, female cynomolgus macaque from a chronic toxicology study. No gross lesions were noted at necropsy. Microscopically, the lesion contained a cross-section of larvae approximately 70-80 μm in diameter, a centrally located intestine flanked on either side by large triangular excretory columns, and prominent single lateral cuticular alae. Mixed inflammatory cells of eosinophils, macrophages, and lymphocytes admixed with abundant connective tissue stroma and necrosis surrounded the …

The similarities of the larval and nymph stages of the tick and louse (Pthirus pubis) may lead to misdiagnosis in rare cases of infestation of the eyelashes. The most frequent manifestations of tick in the eye are conjunctivitis, uveitis, keratitis, and vasculitis. Tick inoculation of the skin can locally lead to formation of granuloma and abscess. More concerning is the potential systemic sequelae that can result from transmission of zoonoses such as Lyme disease. P. pubis can cause pruritic eyelid margins or unusual blepharoconjunctivitis. We present a case of phthiriasis palpebrarum in a 4-…
