Central venous access device-associated complication costs in paediatrics: a systematic review.

Paediatric patients who are critically unwell typically require a central venous access device (CVAD) to streamline medical procedures and minimise risks associated with repeated venipuncture. However, infectious and non-infectious complications are common, with considerable clinical and cost sequelae. This review aimed to identify the mean cost of CVAD-associated complications in paediatric hospital-based care and explore cost variation based on clinical and health services characteristics. This systematic review used the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRI

Predictors of intensive care unit admission rates in patients with acute cholangitis.

Acute cholangitis (AC) is a heterogeneous disease with considerable variation in clinical presentation and high medical costs. Although the overall mortality rate is decreasing. However, the mortality in severe AC ranged from 10%-30% due to sepsis, multi-organ failure, and systemic inflammatory response syndrome. Assessing the predictors of poor outcomes, including mortality, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, and hospital stay, is vital for early and effective intervention. We assessed the predictors of mortality and ICU admission in patients with AC. We conducted a literature search in Pub

Pseudomonas aeruginosa population dynamics in a vancomycin-induced murine model of gastrointestinal carriage.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a common nosocomial pathogen and a major cause of morbidity and mortality in hospitalized patients. Multiple reports highlight that P. aeruginosa gastrointestinal colonization may precede systemic infections by this pathogen. Gaining a deeper insight into the dynamics of P. aeruginosa gastrointestinal carriage is an essential step in managing gastrointestinal colonization and could contribute to preventing bacterial transmission and progression to systemic infection. Here, we present a clinically relevant mouse model relying on parenteral vancomycin pretreatment and a

Subglottic secretion drainage for preventing ventilator-associated pneumonia: an overview of systematic reviews and an updated meta-analysis.

Although several guidelines recommend subglottic secretion drainage as a strategy for prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), its use is not widespread. With the aim to assess the effectiveness of subglottic secretion drainage for preventing VAP and to improve other outcomes such as mortality, duration of mechanical ventilation and length of stay in the intensive care unit (ICU) or hospital, an electronic search of the Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, Web of Science and Embase was undertaken. Nine systematic reviews with meta-analysis (in the overview of reviews) and 20 randomised contr

Association of Operative Timing with Clinical Outcomes and Safety in Thoracic Organ Transplantation: A Meta-Analytic Synthesis of Evidence.

BACKGROUND: Thoracic organ transplantation is often performed at night because of donor availability and the need to minimize cold ischemia time. Whether operative timing is independently associated with short- and long-term outcomes after heart and lung transplantation remains uncertain. METHODS: We conducted a PRISMA-guided systematic review and meta-analysis with PROSPERO registration. PubMed, Scopus, the Cochrane Library, and Web of Science were searched through November 2025 for studies comparing daytime versus nighttime heart or lung transplantation. Primary outcomes included short-term

Hypernatremia: Epidemiology and Predictive Role in Emerging and Established Acute Kidney Injury.

Hypernatremia (plasma sodium > 145 mmol/L) reflects impaired water balance, and affected patients can suffer from severe neurologic symptoms. Hyponatremia, on the other hand, is the most frequent electrolyte disorder in hospitals. It may be diagnosed in acute kidney injury (AKI), but hyponatremia prior to the diagnosis of AKI has also predictive or prognostic value in the short term. Aim of the article was to summarize data on both, epidemiology and outcomes of in-hospital acquired hypernatremia ("In-hospital acquired" refers to the diagnosis of either hypo- or hypernatremia in patients, who d

Organophosphorus flame retardants and plasticizers in air from various indoor environments.

Eleven organophosphorus compounds (OPs) that are used as plasticizers and flame retardants were analysed in duplicate samples of indoor air from 17 domestic and occupational environments. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) columns were used as adsorbents and analysis was performed using GC with a nitrogen phosphorus selective detector. The total amounts of OPs in the air samples ranged between 36 and 950 ng m(-3); tris(chloropropyl) phosphate (TCPP) and tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) being the most abundant (0.4 to 730 ng m(-3)), followed by tributyl phosphate (0.5-120 ng m(-3)). Genome-Wide Screening for Enteric Colonization Factors in Carbapenem-Resistant ST258 Klebsiella pneumoniae.

A diverse, antibiotic-naive microbiota prevents highly antibiotic-resistant microbes, including carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CR-Kp), from achieving dense colonization of the intestinal lumen. Antibiotic-mediated destruction of the microbiota leads to expansion of CR-Kp in the gut, markedly increasing the risk of bacteremia in vulnerable patients. While preventing dense colonization represents a rational approach to reduce intra- and interpatient dissemination of CR-Kp, little is known about pathogen-associated factors that enable dense growth and persistence in the intestinal lu
