Exotic pediculosis and hair-loss syndrome in deer (Odocoileus hemionus) populations in California.

Infestation with nonnative, "exotic" lice was first noted in Washington black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus) in 1994 and has since then spread throughout the western United States. In California, infestation with the exotic louse Damalinia (Cervicola) sp. was first detected in black-tailed deer from northern California in 2004, and, in 2009, the exotic louse species Bovicola tibialis and Linognathus africanus were identified on mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus californicus) in central Sierra Nevada in association with a mortality event. Exotic lice have since been detected in vari

Prevalence, Risk Factors, and Phylogenetic Characterization of Pediculus humanus capitis Among Primary Schoolchildren in Algeria.

INTRODUCTION: Pediculus humanus capitis is a cosmopolitan ectoparasite that causes scalp pruritus, particularly among children in low- and middle-income countries. Transmission occurs mainly through direct head-to-head contact, and various risk factors have been implicated in increasing susceptibility to infestation. Nevertheless, epidemiological and molecular data on head lice infestation in Algeria remain limited. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional epidemiological study aimed to estimate the prevalence of pediculosis capitis and to identify associated risk factors among Algerian pr

Morphological and molecular evidence of Linognathus vituli infestation in yaks from Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, China.

Louse infestations pose a serious threat to yak production, affecting animal health and causing substantial economic losses. However, until now there has been limited information available regarding yak lice infestations. Herein, we collected lice samples from Ganzi Tibetan yaks and amplified the nuclear small subunit ribosomal 18S and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) genes for evolutionary and phylogenetic analyses. Stereoscopic and scanning electron microscope observations showed high morphological similarity between the yak lice and the cattle sucking louse Linognathus vi…

The influence of light infestations of Linognathus vituli on the growth of young cattle.

Groups of Hereford weaners carrying naturally acquired infestations of L. vituli were allocated to a factorial experiment to examine the effect of lice treatment, sex and nutrition on growth rate during winter and early spring. Plane of nutrition was the only factor influencing growth rate over this period. In untreated groups of cattle, the plane of nutrition influenced the lice score but lice score did not influence growth rate.

Prevalence and risk factors associated with ectoparasite infestation of buffaloes in an Amazonian ecosystem.

BACKGROUND: The water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) is well adapted in some regions of the Amazon. Of all Brazilian states, Pará contains the largest number of this species, with 510,000 animals, approximately 38% of the Brazilian buffaloes. Despite the socioeconomic importance of bubaline farming in the northern region, little is known about the prevalence of ectoparasites that affect buffalo herds. This study aimed to identify the species of buffalo ectoparasites in the municipality of Santarém, Pará, and to determine possible risk factors related to ectoparasitic infestation. A cross-sectional

Head lice among Greek schoolchildren: Prevalence, impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and parental beliefs.

Head lice infestation (pediculosis capitis) remains a prevalent issue among school-aged children globally, with social and economic consequences that extend beyond the medical domain. This study investigates the prevalence of head lice infestation among Greek children before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, examines associated sociodemographic and behavioural factors and explores parental beliefs and treatment practices. A structured online questionnaire capturing self-reported infestation frequency, treatment practices and parental beliefs was completed by 227 parents/guardians of children a

Prevalence and Intensity of Pediculus humanus capitis in Kindergarten and Primary School Children in Poland.

Background/Objectives: Head lice is an ever-present public health issue, especially among the child population. The diagnosis of head lice infestation should be based on direct examination of the scalp, but, in practice, this standard is often not followed, giving way to indirect methods, such as questionnaires or sales reports of delousing shampoos. In Poland, there is no national pediculosis capitis control strategy; therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and associated factors of head lice infestation in schools and kindergartens in the years 2021-2023. Methods: Ch

A Lousy Reason for Surgery Cancellations.

Cancellation of surgery has significant adverse impact on patients, health care providers, and their associated facilities. Although head lice infestation has not been shown to be associated with adverse surgical outcomes, it often prompts case cancellation by surgical and anesthesia personnel. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the extent and impact of surgery cancellations due to head lice infestation. In our study, a total of 9 patients were cancelled over a 3-year period. Although there is no direct evidence to show that head lice infestation poses a risk to surgical outcomes, the po

Phthiraptera (lice) are specialised insects adapted to parasitise many warm-blooded vertebrates, including domestic animals and humans. Ofte … nagement programmes have raised awareness of the economic losses due to hide damage associated with lice infestations. Emerging industries such as emu and alpaca farming have raised the pest status of other louse species, and necessitated insecticidal intervention. Does dimeticone clear head lice?

Head lice infestation is common and mainly affects children of primary school age. Treatments include licensed topical preparations containing conventional chemical insecticides and medical devices. Each of these fail to eradicate head lice in some patients and resistance is a problem with chemical insecticides. Dimeticone 4% lotion (Hedrin - Thornton & Ross) is a new treatment licensed "for the eradication of head lice infestations". Here we consider its place in the context of other options.

DOES PREENING BEHAVIOR REDUCE THE PREVALENCE OF AVIAN FEATHER LICE (PHTHIRAPTERA: ISCHNOCERA)?

Animals defend themselves against parasites in many ways. Defenses, such as physiological immune responses, are capable of clearing some infections. External parasites that do not feed on blood, however, are not controlled by the physiological immune system. Instead, ectoparasites like feather-feeding lice (Phthiraptera: Ischnocera) are primarily controlled by behavioral defenses such as preening. Here we test the hypothesis that birds able to preen are capable of clearing infestations of feather lice. We experimentally manipulated preening ability in a captive population of rock pigeons (Colu

Analysis of phoretic relation between chewing lice and hippoboscid flies of Columba livia.

Phoresy is a biologically mechanical phenomena where an immobile organism hitches on a other mobile organism to translocate. This behaviour is not studied very well on the field level especially between two important parasites infesting the same host. Parasite/parasite interaction is rarely studied through most biological host-parasite systems. Here, we evaluated the phoretic relation between parasitic chewing lice and hippoboscid flies (Pseudolynchia canariensis) on rock pigeons. A total of 69 captivated rock pigeons, Columba livia, were examined for the parasitic chewing lice and hippoboscid

Sea lice, Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Krøyer 1837), infected Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) are more susceptible to infectious salmon anemia virus.

The role of parasitic sea lice (Siphonostomatoida; Caligidae), especially Lepeophtheirus salmonis, in the epidemiology of Infectious Salmon Anemia Virus (ISAv) has long been suspected. The epidemiological studies conducted during the 1998 major Infectious Salmon Anaemia (ISA) outbreak in Scotland demonstrated a strong correlation between sea lice presence and ISAv positive sites or subsequent clinical outbreaks of ISA. The question posed from this observation was "do sea lice infestations on Atlantic salmon make them more susceptible to viral infections?" This study investigated the role that …

Chewing lice from wild birds in northern Greece.

Greece represents an important area for wild birds due to its geographical position and habitat diversity. Although the bird species in Greece are well recorded, the information about the chewing lice that infest them is practically non-existent. Thus, the aim of the present study was to record the species of lice infesting wild birds in northern Greece and furthermore, to associate the infestation prevalence with factors such as the age, sex, migration and social behaviour of the host as well as the time of the year. In total 729 birds, (belonging to 9 orders, 32 families and 68 species) were
