White Matter Microstructural Alterations in Newly Diagnosed Parkinson's Disease: A Whole-Brain Analysis Using dMRI.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cardinal motor symptoms and other non-motor symptoms. Studies have investigated various brain areas in PD by detecting white matter alterations using diffusion magnetic resonance imaging processing techniques, which can produce diffusion metrics such as fractional anisotropy and quantitative anisotropy. In this study, we compared the quantitative anisotropy of whole brain regions throughout the subcortical and cortical areas between newly diagnosed PD patients and healthy controls. Additionally, we evaluated the correlat

[A Case of Acute Limbic Encephalitis with Sjögren's Syndrome].

A 52-year-old woman developed abnormal behavior and disturbance of consciousness subsequent to several days with a cold. On admission, she was very confused, with incoherent speech, and an inability to recognize family faces. Diffusion weighted MRI showed high intensity signal change in the bilateral medial temporal lobes, including the hippocampus. Cerebrospinal fluid examination was normal. Tests including various viral antibody titers provided no evidence of infection. Several neuronal antibodies including anti-VGKC and -NMDA receptor antibody were absent. Evidence of malignancy was not app

The Role of Frontolimbic Network in Suicide: A Descriptive Literature Review of Neuroimaging Studies.

Suicide is a complex public health issue characterized by impairments in emotion regulation and cognitive control. Identifying the brain substrates of suicide is critical for developing targeted and effective prevention strategies. Given the central role of the frontolimbic network in affective processing and executive functioning, this review aimed to summarize neuroimaging findings in the frontolimbic network associated with suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs). We first reviewed structural and functional neuroimaging studies published over the past decade reporting frontolimbic network ch

Bilaterality of temporal EEG findings in limbic encephalitis compared to other mesiotemporal epilepsies - A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The current diagnostic criteria for autoimmune limbic encephalitis (LE) stress bilaterality of temporal MRI and EEG findings. This retrospective cohort study aimed to determine whether bilaterality is indeed more common in LE than in other mesiotemporal epilepsies. METHODS: We compared EEG findings mostly from long-term EEG monitoring in patients with LE (n=59), hippocampal sclerosis (HS, n=44), and mesiotemporal tumors (n=24). RESULTS: Bilateral temporal EEG findings including temporal slowing, interictal epileptiform discharges (IED), and seizures were equally frequent with 37%

[Psychomotor epilepsy: phenomenology, localization, pathogenesis and therapy].

Next to tonic-clonic seizures psychomotor (complex focal) seizures are the most common form of all epileptic seizures, except in infancy where they are seen rarely. Differently from generalised non convulsive seizures (like petit mal absences), their first appearance has no typical age limit, however, their proportion to other forms of seizures increases in adolescence and adults especially between the third and fifth decade of life. The main symptom is the disorder of consciousness which lasts at least more than half a minute, normally several minutes in completely distinct seizures, which do

A case report of agoraphobia following right parietal lobe surgery: changes in functional and structural connectivities of the multimodal vestibular network.

Agoraphobia is a visuo-vestibular-spatial disorder that may involve dysfunction of the vestibular network, which includes the insular and limbic cortex. We sought to study the neural correlates of this disorder in an individual who developed agoraphobia after surgical removal of a high-grade glioma located in the right parietal lobe, by assessing pre- and post-surgery connectivities in the vestibular network. The patient underwent surgical resection of the glioma located within the right supramarginal gyrus. The resection interested also portions of the superior and inferior parietal lobe. Str

Preliminary fMRI findings concerning the influence of 5-HTP on food selection.

OBJECTIVE: This functional magnetic resonance imaging study was designed to observe how physiological brain states can alter food preferences. A primary goal was to observe food-sensitive regions and moreover examine whether 5-HTP intake would activate areas which have been associated with appetite suppression, anorexia, satiety, and weight loss. METHODS AND PROCEDURE: Fourteen healthy male and female participants took part in the study, of which half of them received the supplement 5-HTP and the rest vitamin C (control) on an empty stomach. During the scanning session, they passively observe

Use of diffusion-weighted imaging to distinguish seizure-related change from limbic encephalitis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) can help differentiate peri-ictal signal abnormality from limbic encephalitis (LE) among patients with medial temporal lobe T2-hyperintensity. METHODS: We retrospectively identified patients with peri-ictal medial temporal lobe T2-hyperintensity using a Mayo Clinic database, and reviewed their DWI to look for unique diffusion restriction patterns. We then identified patients with medial temporal lobe T2-hyperintensity and LE, and reviewed their DWI to see if these patterns were ever present. Presence of diffusion restriction pat

Brain Metabolic Connectivity Patterns in Patients with Prolonged Disorder of Consciousness after Hypoxic-Ischemic Injury: A Preliminary Study.

Understanding the patterns of brain glucose metabolism and connectivity in hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) patients with prolonged disorders of consciousness (DOC) may be of positive significance to the accurate assessment of consciousness and the optimization of neuromodulation strategy. We retrospectively analyzed the brain glucose metabolism pattern and its correlation with clinical Coma Recovery Scale-Revised (CRS-R) score in six HIE patients with prolonged DOC who had undergone 18F-deoxyglucose brain positron emission tomography scanning (FDG-PET). We also compared the differences i

Facial Emotion Recognition Deficits in Alzheimer's Disease Are Associated With Bilateral Uncinate Fasciculus Abnormalities and Frontotemporal-Limbic Microstructural Disorganisation.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is associated with memory impairment and social cognitive dysfunction, including facial emotion recognition (FER) deficits. Our previous diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) study linked poor recognition of negative facial emotions in patients with AD to increased mean diffusivity (MD) in the left uncinate fasciculus (UF). Whether FER deficits in AD reflect microstructural alterations in related grey matter regions remains unclear. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 74 patients with AD and 28 cognitively normal (CN) subjects underwent behavioural assessment

Prevalence of large cavum septi pellucidi and its relation to the medial temporal lobe structures in schizophrenia spectrum.

Magnetic resonance imaging was used to evaluate the prevalence of the cavum septi pellucidi (CSP) in 154 schizophrenia patients, 47 schizotypal disorder patients, and 163 healthy controls. We also explored the relation of a large CSP (> or =6 mm) with medial temporal lobe structures. No significant difference was found in the prevalence of the CSP (76.0% of the schizophrenia patients, 81.6% of the controls, and 85.1% of the schizotypal patients) or the large CSP (6.5% of the schizophrenia patients, 7.4% of the controls, and 10.6% of the schizotypal patients) among the groups, but patients with

Focal retrograde amnesia following bilateral temporal lobe pathology. A neuropsychological and magnetic resonance study.

A patient who suffered a severe closed head injury was left with a dense retrograde amnesia for events which she had experienced prior to her injury, but she showed only mild, patchy anterograde memory impairment. Her retrograde amnesia included both public events and autobiographical material, and it extended back to her childhood. Previously learned skills such as playing a piano and driving a car were spared, even though she had no recollection at all of the original learning experience. A series of focused magnetic resonance scan images revealed major pathology in the anterior portion of b

Temporal Lobe Epilepsy Focus Detection Based on the Correlation Between Brain MR Images and EEG Recordings with a Decision Tree.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: In this study, a medical decision support system is presented to assist physicians in epileptic focus detection by correlating MRI and EEG data of temporal lobe epilepsy patients. METHODS: By exploiting the asymmetry in the hippocampus in MRI images and using voxel-based morphometry analysis, gray matter reduction in the temporal and limbic lobes is detected, and epileptic focus prediction is realized. In addition, an epileptic focus is also determined by calculating the asymmetry score from EEG channels. Finally, epileptic focus detection was performed by associating M…
