Increases in cognitive and linguistic processing primarily account for increases in speaking rate with age.

Age-related increases of speaking rate are not fully understood, but have been attributed to gains in biologic factors and learned skills that support speech production. This study investigated developmental changes in speaking rate and articulatory kinematics of participants aged 4 (N = 7), 7 (N = 10), 10 (N = 9), 13 (N = 7), 16 (N = 9) years, and young adults (N = 11) in speaking tasks varying in task demands. Speaking rate increased with age, with decreases in pauses and articulator displacements but not increases in articulator movement speed. Movement speed did not appear to constrain the

Genetic analysis of dyslexia candidate genes in the European cross-linguistic NeuroDys cohort.

Dyslexia is one of the most common childhood disorders with a prevalence of around 5-10% in school-age children. Although an important genetic component is known to have a role in the aetiology of dyslexia, we are far from understanding the molecular mechanisms leading to the disorder. Several candidate genes have been implicated in dyslexia, including DYX1C1, DCDC2, KIAA0319, and the MRPL19/C2ORF3 locus, each with reports of both positive and no replications. We generated a European cross-linguistic sample of school-age children - the NeuroDys cohort - that includes more than 900 individuals

Culturally and linguistically diverse students in health professional programs: an exploration of concerns and needs.

INTRODUCTION: Cultural diversity among students in tertiary institutions in Australia and globally has increased rapidly in the last decade, and is continuing to do so. METHODS: Focus groups were held at the University of Newcastle, NSW to: (1) examine the specific needs of international students in the Master of Pharmacy, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Nursing programs in relation to language and cultural considerations and (2) to understand the attitudes of domestic students to the cultural issues faced among their peers. The project explored these issues with the intention to inform

Dissociable mechanisms supporting awareness: the P300 and gamma in a linguistic attentional blink task.

As demonstrated by the attentional blink (AB) phenomenon, awareness for attended stimuli is governed by sharp capacity limits. We used a linguistic AB task to investigate the neural mechanisms that underlie failures of awareness, examining both event-related potentials and oscillatory brain activity to correctly reported and missed second targets (T2s) presented after a correctly reported first target (T1) in a rapid visual stream of distractors. Correctly reported targets occurring at a short lag (250 ms) after T1-within the classic AB period-elicited enhanced late gamma activity relative to

Acoustic and laryngographic measures of the laryngeal reflexes of linguistic prominence and vocal effort in German.

This study uses acoustic and physiological measures to compare laryngeal reflexes of global changes in vocal effort to the effects of modulating such aspects of linguistic prominence as sentence accent, induced by focus variation, and word stress. Seven speakers were recorded by using a laryngograph. The laryngographic pulses were preprocessed to normalize time and amplitude. The laryngographic pulse shape was quantified using open and skewness quotients and also by applying a functional version of the principal component analysis. Acoustic measures included the acoustic open quotient and spec

Social narratives in agenesis of the corpus callosum: linguistic analysis of the Thematic Apperception Test.

In a previous study, individuals with agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) with normal intelligence provided narratives to pictures from the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) that were limited in logical coherence and social awareness. The current study examined the linguistic content of TAT stories from 22 persons with isolated complete ACC compared to 30 IQ- and age-matched controls using the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (Pennebaker et al., 2001). Compared to controls, individuals with ACC used fewer words pertaining to emotionality, cognitive processes, and social processes. They also

Cultural and linguistic influence on brain organization for language and possible consequences for dyslexia: a review.

Current neuroimaging and neurophysiologic techniques have substantially increased our possibilities to study processes related to various language functions in the intact human brain. Learning to read and write influences the functional organization of the brain. What is universal and what is specific in the languages of the world are important issues. Most studies on healthy bilinguals indicate that essentially the same neural mechanisms are used for first and second languages, albeit with some linguistic and cultural influences related to speech and writing systems, particularly between alph

Atypical language lateralization and early linguistic development in children with focal brain lesions.

The effects of congenital, unilateral, focal brain lesions on early linguistic development and hemispheric lateralization for language were investigated longitudinally in 24 preschool children with hemiplegia (14 males, 10 females), 12 with left hemisphere damage (LHD) and 12 with right hemisphere damage (RHD). A comprehensive linguistic assessment was performed at 2 and 3 years of life; cerebral lateralization for language was measured by the Fused Dichotic Words Listening Test. An early left-side specificity for language was indicated by the presence of lexical and grammatical delay in most

Intervention with linguistically diverse preschool children: a focus on developing home language(s).

PURPOSE: This article addresses a series of questions that are critical to planning and implementing effective intervention programs for young linguistically diverse learners with primary language impairment (LI). Linguistically diverse learners in the United States include children whose families speak languages such as Spanish, Korean, Cantonese, Hmong, Vietnamese, or any language other than, or in addition to, English. METHOD: A narrative review of the relevant literature addresses clinical questions including (a) Why support the home language when it is not the language used in school or

Transfer effects across contextual and linguistic boundaries: evidence from poor readers.

We report two experiments that are consistent with two hypotheses about poor, nonfluent readers: (1) fluency gains in text reading skill transfer across contextual and linguistic boundaries and (2) these fluency gains enable higher-order comprehension operations to function in the processing of text. We conclude that unlike the fluent reader, the nonfluent reader does not completely integrate the surface characteristics (words) of the text and the message of the text. Word-level representations remain free to support transfer across various processing episodes. Thus, a variety of reading exper

Linguistic interaction: the active role of parents in speech therapy for cleft palate patients.

As speech and language intervention becomes more naturalistic, it seems obvious that language and other developmental competencies are, in a strong way, a function of the quality and quantity of relationships in which the child evolves. This paper compares two different speech therapy groups of cleft palate children. Children included in the first group received therapy alone with the speech pathologist, whereas children from the second group received speech therapy accompanied by their mothers. The purpose was to evaluate and provide the mothers with interaction modes for facilitating communi

Cerebral lateralization in linguistic and nonlinguistic perception: analysis of cognitive styles in the auditory modality.

Twenty-two normal subjects (9 left-handers, 13 right-handers) and five dyslexic patients (3 right-handers, and 2 left-handers) were characterized by physiologic hemisphere dominance. The latter was determined by the response of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) blood flow velocity, measured using the transcranial Doppler (TCD) technique, to hypoventilation (hypercapnia). Using bilateral almost simultaneous TCD measurements of mean blood flow velocity in the MCA, lateralization was determined in response to linguistic and nonlinguistic paradigms. In relation to the linguistic paradigm, left-hand

UltraUNet: Real-Time Ultrasound Tongue Segmentation for Diverse Linguistic and Imaging Conditions.

Ultrasound tongue imaging (UTI) provides a non-invasive, cost-effective modality for investigating speech articulation, speech motor control, and speech-related disorders. However, real-time tongue contour segmentation remains a significant challenge due to the inherently low signal-to-noise ratio, variability in imaging conditions, and computational demands of real-time performance. In this study, we proposed UltraUNet, a lightweight and efficient encoder-decoder architecture specifically optimized for real-time segmentation of tongue contours in ultrasound images. UltraUNet introduces severa

Writing when writhing with psychosis: a computational linguistic autopsy of Vaslav Nijinsky's diary.

'God of Dance' Vaslav Nijinsky wrote profusely during a short period in 1918-1919, immediately preceding his diagnosis of schizophrenia and long-term confinement. This diary, in its uncensored form, constitutes one of the most extensively documented ex tempore first-person accounts during psychosis. It offers a chance to explore the impact of psychosis on writing-not just on what one writes, but also how one writes under such torment. The text generates a pervasive impression of repetitive, meandering thought-invoking suspicions of being a product of formal thought disorder-an affliction that

Neural Coding of Multiple Linguistic Components During Reading Comprehension Across Development.

Understanding how multiple linguistic components are represented within the human language network, and how these representations change across development, remains an important open question. This study examines whether the language network integrates linguistic components through regions dedicated to single components (single-component coding) or through regions representing combined components (combination-based coding), and how these representational patterns differ across development. We recruited 64 participants (34 children and 30 adults) to complete a hierarchical reading task involvin
