Comparative study on the antioxidant efficacy of Adinandra nitida extracts in inhibiting lipid oxidation in edible oils.

Exploring natural antioxidants is essential to delay lipid oxidation. This study investigated the inhibitory effect of Adinandra nitida (AN) extract in six edible oils, compared to TP and TBHQ. Methods included extract preparation, bioactive compounds analysis, in vitro antioxidant activities by FRAP, DPPH, and ABTS assays, fatty acid composition detection, and POV determination. The results showed that AN was rich in total flavonoids, total phenols and had better iron ion reduction ability than TBHQ. In oleic and linoleic acid-rich oils, AN significantly delayed early-stage lipid oxidation, o

Fatty acids stable carbon isotope fractionation in the bovine organism. A compound-specific isotope analysis through gas chromatography combustion isotope ratio mass spectrometry.

The contribution of dietary fatty acids to the quality of the meat and their path through the bovine organism is currently the subject of a lot of research. Stable isotope ratio analysis represents a powerful tool for this aim, one that has not been studied in depth yet. In this work, for the first time, the carbon isotopic ratios of six fatty acids (myristic 14:0, palmitic 16:0, stearic 18:0, oleic 18:1n-9, linoleic 18:2n-6 and linolenic 18:3n-3 acids) in different matrixes (diet, rumen, duodenal content, liver and loin) were analysed through gas chromatography combustion isotope ratio mass s

Essential fatty acids disrupt the mycolic acid-rich cell envelope of clinical Nocardia isolates: a membrane-targeting approach to combat persistent infections.

BACKGROUND: Conventional antibiotics against slow-growing, mycolic acid-rich Nocardia often require prolonged therapy and are associated with high relapse rates. Membrane-targeting essential fatty acids may circumvent growth-dependent resistance. METHODS: Five essential fatty acids were screened against 82 clinical Nocardia isolates by broth microdilution. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) was further assessed for bactericidal kinetics, membrane integrity by propidium iodide staining and scanning electron microscopy, transcriptomic profiling, and combined activity with amikacin and tobramycin. Beyond the Mediterranean diet: the role of omega-3 Fatty acids in the prevention of coronary heart disease.

Evidence from epidemiologic and clinical secondary prevention trials suggest that the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) may have a significant role in the prevention of coronary heart disease. Dietary sources of n-3 PUFAs include fish oils, rich in eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, along with plants rich in a-linolenic acid. Randomized secondary prevention clinical trials with fish oils (eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid) and a-linolenic acid have demonstrated reductions in risk that compare favorably to those seen in landmark secondary prevention trials w

Why vitamin C and corticosteroids are inadequate and how essential fatty acids (EFAs) can augment recovery from sepsis.

The failed regimens for sepsis include but are not limited to steroids, antibiotic coverage for gram-negatives, and activated protein C. Reports of dramatic successes with vitamin C, its low cost and virtual absence of side effects in sepsis are encouraging despite some negative reports. I propose that this discrepancy in the results could be attributed to the altered status of essential fatty acid (EFA) metabolism in sepsis. Patients with sepsis have reduced plasma phospholipid concentrations of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA, 18:3 ω-6), dihomo-GLA (20:3 ω-6), arachidonic acid (AA, 20:4 ω-6), alph

Serum lipoprotein fatty acid patterns in various types of familiar combined hyperlipidemia.

The relative content of various fatty acids in serum lipoproteins was determined in patients with type IIa (38), IIb (49) and IV (77) of hyperlipoproteinemia and compared with 52 controls. Significant changes were found in hyperlipoproteinemia associated with hypertriglyceridemia (type IV) but not in "pure" hypercholesterolemia (type IIa). In all lipoprotein fractions (VLDL, LDL, HDL) in type IV of hyperlipoproteinemia the increased oleic and linolenic acid proportions were found, while proportions of linoleic, arachidonic and docosahexaenoic acids were decreased. The saturated fatty acids (my

Fatty acid composition of membrane phospholipids of cataractous human lenses.

The effect of lipid peroxidation on fatty acid composition in membrane phospholipids of transparent and cataractous lens nuclei was investigated. The preliminary results demonstrate a trend toward an increase in the content of palmitic acid with a decrease in the content of oleic acid, linolenic acid and docosahexaenoic acid in the opaque nuclei as compared to the transparent ones of senile cataractous lenses.

Fatty acid microemulsion for the treatment of neonatal conjunctivitis: quantification, characterisation and evaluation of antimicrobial activity.

Fatty acids (FAs) are used by many organisms as defence mechanism against virulent bacteria. The high safety profile and broad spectrum of activity make them potential alternatives to currently used topical antibiotics for the treatment of eye infections in neonates. The current study utilised a Design of Experiment approach to optimise the quantification of five fatty acids namely; lauric acid, tridecanoic acid, myristoleic acid, palmitoleic acid and α-linolenic acid. The significance of the influence of the experimental parameters such as volume of catalyst, volume of n-hexane, incubation te

Synthesis of Microbial-Derived Octadecanoids.

Gut bacteria can convert dietary fatty acids into oxygenated metabolites called oxylipins, which can exert potent lipid mediator functions. The oxylipins derived from C-18 fatty acids are termed octadecanoids and associate with multiple disorders including allergy and metabolic dysregulation. This study presents the synthesis of 17 octadecanoids possessing a hydroxy group (n = 9) or a ketone (n = 8) on the 10- or 13-positions. The products of these two series were prepared for the linoleic acid (LA), α-linolenic acid (ALA) and γ-linolenic acid (GLA) pathways. The synthetic strategies provided

Umbilical cord and maternal blood red cell fatty acids and early childhood wheezing and eczema.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have explored whether fetal exposure to n-6 and n-3 fatty acids influences the inception of atopic disease. OBJECTIVE: To assess prenatal fatty acid exposures as predictors of early childhood wheezing and eczema. METHODS: In the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, late pregnancy maternal blood samples and umbilical cord blood samples were assayed for n-6 and n-3 fatty acids (percentage of total red cell phospholipid), and mothers were asked about wheezing and eczema in their children. We measured associations of 11 n-6 and n-3 fatty acid exposures with wh

Influence of unsaturated fatty acids, membrane fluidity and oxygenation on the survival of an E. coli fatty acid auxotroph following gamma-irradiation.

Escherichia coli K1060, a fatty acid auxotroph unable to either synthesize or degrade unsaturated fatty acids (uFAs), was used to study the effect of membrane fluidity on survival after exposure to ionizing radiation. Using this strain of E. coli, significant alterations in the fatty acid composition of the membrane have been produced and verified by gas chromatography. Linolenic, oleic, elaidic and palmitelaidic acids were the uFAs used. Survival above the transition temperature (Tt) (liquid crystal in equilibrium gel) was comparable for these fatty-acid-supplemented membranes after exposure

Associations of umbilical cord fatty acid profiles and desaturase enzyme indices with birth weight for gestational age in Japanese infants.

Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs) required for infant development are produced by Δ6 desaturase (D6D) and Δ5 desaturase (D5D). The D6D index and D5D index are calculated based on their respective precursor/product ratios. The D5D and D6D indices are related to obesity and lifestyle-related diseases. The aim of the present study was to examine the associations of umbilical cord fatty acid profiles, D6D index, and D5D index in appropriate for gestational age (AGA), small for gestational age (SGA), and large for gestational age (LGA) infants. This was a nested case-control study, a

Lipid metabolism of manganese-deficient algae. I. Effect of manganese deficiency on the greening and the lipid composition of Euglena gracilis Z.

The growth of photoautotrophic Euglena gracilis Z is strongly inhibited by manganese deficiency, whereas chlorophyll formation is not appreciably affected. The galactosyldiglyceride content of the manganese-deficient photo-autotrophic Euglena was about 40% lower on the basis of either chlorophyll content or dry weight. When dark-grown cultures of Euglena were grown photoheterotrophically in light sufficient for the greening of the cells, or photosynthesis, manganese deficiency resulted in a reduction of the cellular content of chlorophyll and galactosyldiglycerides to 40% of control values, in

Four-year elevated atmospheric CO2 increases soybean seed yield and reshapes fatty acid composition without consistently altering crude oil content.

Elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration (eCO2) can stimulate crop productivity, but whether soybean oil-related responses remain stable under long-term CO2 enrichment remains unclear. We conducted a four-year open-top chamber experiment to examine seed yield, crude oil content, fatty acid composition, and oil quality indices in two soybean cultivars. Elevated CO2 consistently increased seed yield by 18-54%, with an average increase of 31%, but did not consistently increase crude oil content. Linoleic acid remained the dominant fatty acid, followed by oleic, palmitic, linolenic, and stearic acid

Fatty acids and the initial events of endothelial damage seen by scanning and transmission electron microscopy.

A method was developed for observing changes in the endothelial cells in rabbit ear veins in vivo by scanning electron microscopy. Injection of fatty acids into the ear vein caused damage to the endothelium. The first signs of damage seen were marked bulges in the nuclei and loss of the rhomboidal shape of the endothelial cells. More severe damage included loss of nuclei, leaving holes in the cytoplasm. Some parts of the damaged endothelium showed complete separation of cells from each other and exposure of sub-endothelial tissue to which platelets with pseudopodia were adhering. Damage to the

Risk factors for prostate cancer incidence and progression in the health professionals follow-up study.

Risk factors for prostate cancer could differ for various sub-groups, such as for "aggressive" and "non-aggressive" cancers or by grade or stage. Determinants of mortality could differ from those for incidence. Using data from the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study, we re-examined 10 factors (cigarette smoking history, physical activity, BMI, family history of prostate cancer, race, height, total energy consumption, and intakes of calcium, tomato sauce and alpha-linolenic acid) using multivariable Cox regression in relation to multiple subcategories for prostate cancer risk. These were facto

Essential fatty acid metabolism in diseases of connective tissue with special reference to scleroderma and to Sjogren's syndrome.

Drugs which modify the conversion of essential fatty acids to prostaglandins and leukotrienes are the mainstays of treatment in rheumatology. Yet these drugs have little or no action in scleroderma or Sjogren's syndrome and under some circumstances may have adverse effects. Patients with scleroderma have been shown to have very high levels of circulating prostaglandins, coupled with depletion of the prostaglandin precursors, dihomogammalinolenic acid and arachidonic acid. Levels of the metabolites of arachidonic acid, 22:4n-6 and 22:5n-6, which have major roles in maintaining normal cell membr

Protective Effects and Molecular Signaling of n-3 Fatty Acids on Oxidative Stress and Inflammation in Retinal Diseases.

Oxidative stress and inflammation play crucial roles in the development and progression of retinal diseases. Retinal damage by various etiologies can result in retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), diabetic retinopathy (DR), and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). n-3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids and are necessary for homeostasis. They are important retinal membrane components and are involved in energy storage. n-3 fatty acids also have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and their suppressive effects against ROP, DR, and AMD have been previously evaluated. α-linolenic acid
