Accelerated orthodontic treatment - what's the evidence?

The demand and accessibility of orthodontic care has increased but has also been accompanied by patient requests for shorter treatment times. Longer orthodontic treatment increases the risk of decalcification, gingival recession, and root resorption and so shorter treatment times have multiple advantages as well as appealing to patient's desires. Numerous techniques and materials have been suggested to reduce treatment times but, in most cases, are based upon selected case reports with no prospective clinical trials to validate claims. The present review examines many of the current options pu

Comparison of effects of LLLT and LIPUS on fracture healing in animal models and patients: A systematic review.

The aim of this paper is to study the in vivo potency of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) and low intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) alone, accompanied by bone grafts, or accompanied by other factors on fracture healing in animal models and patients. In this paper, we aim to systematically review the published scientific literature regarding the use of LLLT and LIPUS to accelerate fracture healing in animal models and patients. We searched the PubMed database for the terms LLLT or LIPUS and/or bone, and fracture. Our analysis also suggests that both LIPUS and LLLT may be beneficial to fracture

Ultra-structural effects of different low-level lasers on normal cultured human melanocytes: an in vitro comparative study.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the different types of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on the ultra-structure and number of melanosomes in normal cultured human melanocytes. Specific effects of various types of LLLT on the ultra-structure of melanosomes have not yet been reported. Melanocytes were exposed to LLLT at an energy level of 2.0 J/cm2, using a blue (457 nm), red (635 nm), or ultraviolet (UV) (355 nm) laser. After 72 h of irradiation, the melanocytes were fixed in 2.5 % glutaraldehyde (pH 7.2) phosphate buffer for 8 h and analyzed by transmission electron micros

Pulsed dye laser and pulsed dye laser-mediated photodynamic therapy in the treatment of dermatologic disorders.

BACKGROUND: The pulsed dye laser (PDL) is used for treating cutaneous vascular disorders. Recent reports have also shown its effectiveness in conditions of other etiologies, although the precise mechanisms of action are unknown. PDL has also been used in photodynamic therapy (PDT) for many dermatologic conditions. We review the broad array of disorders that can be effectively managed using the PDL. OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: A review of the literature on the application of the PDL and PDL-mediated PDT in dermatologic disorders. A literature-based search was performed using PubMed from 1997 to 20

Photobiomodulation of pain in carpal tunnel syndrome: review of seven laser therapy studies.

In this review, seven studies using photoradiation to treat carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) are discussed: two controlled studies that observed real laser to have a better effect than sham laser, to treat CTS; three openprotocol studies that observed real laser to have a beneficial effect to treat CTS; and two studies that did not observe real laser to have a better effect than a control condition, to treat CTS. In the five studies that observed beneficial effect from real laser, higher laser dosages (9 Joules, 12-30 Joules, 32 J/cm(2), 225 J/cm(2)) were used at the primary treatment sites (media

Use of Picosecond Laser for Melasma Treatment: A Narrative Review.

Background: Melasma results from the imbalance of the mechanisms that regulate skin pigmentation, causing the appearance of hyperpigmented patches. Treatment includes topical and oral agents, chemical peelings, microneedling, and laser therapy. The picosecond laser was developed to minimize pain and skin discoloration, which can sometimes be associated with laser treatments. It emits short pulses of energy that last from 300 to 500 picoseconds, leading to a more significant fragmentation of melanin, with miniminal risk of scarring and thermal lesions in the surrounding skin. Objective: The aut
