Secondary neoplasms of the male genital tract with different patterns of involvement in adults and children.

AIMS: The incidence, presentation and macroscopic and histological features of secondary neoplasms of the male genital tract are described with reference to their differential diagnosis. METHODS AND RESULTS: A retrospective study of cases from the Royal London Hospital yielded a total of 31 secondary neoplasms involving the testis: 14 at postmortem examination and 17 surgical specimens. Nine cases were leukaemias: six acute lymphoblastic and two acute myeloid leukaemias in children, and one chronic lymphocytic leukaemia in an adult. The commonest primary sites of metastases to the testis were

Lung Cancer in the Collapsed Lobe Following Successful Bronchoscopic Lung Volume Reduction.

In bronchoscopic lung volume reduction (BLVR), one-way endobronchial valves induce atelectasis of a target lobe, resulting in lung volume reduction in patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Despite improvement in overall quality of life, these patients remain at high risk for lung cancer, including within the collapsed lobe, where nodule detection is particularly challenging. This article presents a case of lung cancer arising in a collapsed lobe after BLVR and highlights imaging features suggestive of a growing malignancy. Although a nodule may be visible at noncontrast C

Bladder cancer in cancer patients: population-based estimates from a large Swedish study.

BACKGROUND: This study quantified the risk of urinary bladder neoplasms in cancer patients taking into account the age at first diagnosis, the gender of the patients and the lead time between diagnoses. METHODS: We used standardised incidence ratios (SIRs) to compare the incidence of bladder tumours in 967 767 cancer patients with the incidence rate in the general Swedish population. A total of 3324 male and 1560 female patients developed bladder tumours at least 1 year after first cancer diagnosis. RESULTS: After bladder and renal pelvis cancers, the SIRs of bladder neoplasms were higher in

Classic Kaposi's sarcoma as a first primary neoplasm.

Patients with a diagnosis of primary classic Kaposi's sarcoma (CKS) appear to be at a higher risk of multiple neoplasms. We analyzed a nation-wide series of 1,016 patients with a primary CKS occurring between 1961 and 1992 in the Jewish Israeli population to evaluate the risk of secondary neoplasms. The primary CKS and subsequent neoplasms were identified from the Israel Cancer Registry. All HIV-seropositive Kaposi's sarcoma cases were excluded. The expected number of second primary neoplasms was calculated after stratifying by age, origin and gender. Of the CKS patients, 61 developed a second

[Features of lung cancer carcinogenesis involving cancer stem cells in COVID-19. Effects of photodynamic therapy in the treatment of cancer and COVID-19].

Lung cancer occupies a leading position among malignant neoplasms throughout the world, and the issue of carcinogenesis of this disease today still remains relevant. This review examines in detail the issue of the participation of cancer stem cells in the development of lung cancer, the concept of the stem cell niche, and options for their detection using molecular and immunohistochemical studies. A separate section examines the impact of the new coronavirus infection COVID-19 on CSC and lung cancer carcinogenesis in general, as well as the successful results of the use of photodynamic therapy

Myeloid diseases in the lung and pleura.

Myeloid diseases detected as primary or secondary lesions in the lung and pleura are rare. Clinical presentations and radiographic results may vary significantly depending on the nature of the diseases. The most common diseases associated with lung and pleura involvement are myeloid sarcoma/acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH). AML typically represents localized involvement by systemic acute leukemia, while EMH is frequently secondary to underlying benign hematolymphoid disorders or myeloproliferative neoplasms. This review provides an overview of the pathogenesi

The utility and limitation of thyroid transcription factor-1 protein in primary and metastatic pulmonary neoplasms.

Thyroid transcription factor-1 (TTF-1) is a tissue-specific transcription factor expressed in the thyroid and lung. The clinical utility and limitation of TTF-1 in primary or metastatic carcinomas of the lung have not been previously studied in detail. We examined TTF-1 expression in 510 primary lung and 107 metastatic neoplasms. TTF-1 was detectable in 4/99 (4%) squamous cell carcinomas, 169/176 (96%) solitary adenocarcinomas, 34/34 (100%) multifocal adenocarcinomas, 1/1 (100%) signet ring cell carcinoma, 16/20 (80%) mucinous adenocarcinomas, 23/23 (100%) nonmucinous bronchioloalveolar carcin

The importance of fiber biopersistence and lung dose in determining the chronic inhalation effects of X607, RCF1, and chrysotile asbestos in rats.

The chronic inhalation effects in rats of X607 (a rapidly dissolving synthetic vitreous fiber) were compared with those previously reported for RCF1 (a refractory ceramic synthetic vitreous fiber) and chrysotile asbestos. Of primary concern was the importance of biopersistence as a mechanism of fiber toxicity. Fischer rats were exposed to fiber aerosol by nose-only inhalation for 6 h/day, 5 days/week for 2 years. X607 and RCF1 aerosols were similar in concentration (approximately 200 fibers/cc) and average dimensions (approximately 20 x 1 microns). Chrysotile aerosol was higher in concentratio

Amylase mRNA transcripts in normal tissues and neoplasms: the implication of different expressions of amylase isogenes.

To understand the cellular origin and mechanism of gene expression in amylase-producing cancers, the phenotyping of amylase isogenes by the polymerase chain reaction and restriction-fragment-length polymorphism using restriction endonucleases TaqI, DdeI, HinfI, and AfaI were performed for 3 amylase-producing lung adenocarcinomas, 16 lung cancers without hyperamylasemia, other human malignant neoplasms, cultured cell lines, and normal tissues. In addition, amylase mRNA transcripts were semi-quantified by the limited polymerase chain reaction. Amylase mRNA transcripts were detected in all of the

Uniportal video-assisted thoracic surgery approach for simultaneous lung cancer and thymic carcinoma: Case report and literature review.

Thymic carcinoma is an epithelial tumor derived from thymic epithelial cells. Thymic tumors may be associated with other simultaneous and/or metachronous extra-thymic tumors (e.g., lung cancer). Here, we report a case of simultaneous surgical management of lung and mediastinal neoplasm together with a review of the literature. During radiological follow-up for prostate and colorectal cancer, an 82-year-old man was diagnosed with lung cancer with simultaneous mediastinal suspected neoplasm. Both were surgically removed with a single intervention performed via a uniportal video-assisted thoracic

Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) and pleural fluid cytology diagnosis of benign metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland in the lung: a case report and review of literature.

Lesions that contain abundant benign myoepithelial cells, including pleomorphic adenomas of salivary gland origin, may present a diagnostic challenge in fine-needle aspiration (FNA) specimens. Benign metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma is a rare neoplasm, in which the benign appearing pleomorphic adenoma, without any histological evidence of malignancy, metastasizes to distant sites including lung. In the absence of clinical history of a pre-existing myoepithelial neoplasm, the presence of myoepithelial cells in the lung or any other organs besides salivary glands may create diagnostic difficult

Subtypes and proliferation patterns of small intestine neuroendocrine tumors revealed by single-cell RNA sequencing.

Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) occur primarily in the small intestine, lung, and pancreas. Due to their rarity compared to other malignancies in these organs, their complex biology remains poorly understood, including their oncogenesis, tumor composition, and the intriguing phenomena of mixed neuroendocrine non-neuroendocrine neoplasms (MiNEN). Here, we profiled ten low-grade small intestine NET (SiNET) samples as well as one mixed lung tumor by single-cell or single-nuclei RNA-seq. We find that SiNETs are largely separated into two distinct subtypes, in which the neuroendocrine cells upregulate

Morphological comparison between benign keratinizing cystic squamous cell tumours of the lung and squamous lesions of the skin in rats.

Approximately 700 cases of keratinizing cystic squamous lung lesions in rats were investigated by light microscopy in order to clarify the nomenclature and classification of these lesions. The structure of benign keratinizing cystic squamous cell tumours of the lung was compared to that of cystic squamous lesions in the skin of rats, with consideration of data from the literature. We conclude that the reviewed keratinizing cystic squamous cell lesions of the lung are true neoplasms and that the growth pattern of these cystic lesions is inconsistent with that of a simple cyst. [Synchronous Follicular Lymphoma and Lung Adenocarcinoma-A Case Report].

A 67-year-old man diagnosed with multiple synchronous malignancies, including follicular lymphoma and lung adenocarcinoma, underwent 1 cycle of chemotherapy with obinutuzumab and bendamustine, followed by lower lobectomy. After surgery, adjuvant therapy with osimertinib was administered. The patient showed no evidence of lymphoma or lung cancer recurrence for over a year after surgery. Multiple malignancies involving both hematological neoplasms and solid tumors are rare, to optimize treatment and improve patient outcomes, consultations with multiple medical departments are warranted.

Paraneoplastic pemphigus herpetiformis with IgG antibodies to desmoglein 3 and without mucosal lesions.

BACKGROUND: Pemphigus herpetiformis (PH) is a rare clinical entity that combines the clinical features of dermatitis herpetiformis and the immunopathologic features of pemphigus. The target antigen is usually desmoglein 1, with exceptional cases manifesting autoantibodies against desmoglein 3. More recently, it has been found that many patients with PH also demonstrate autoantibodies against desmocollin. The association of PH with a malignant neoplasm is rare. OBSERVATIONS: We describe a patient with PH and a lung neoplasm. Immunologic studies demonstrated IgG antibodies to desmoglein 3 and t
