Administration of vitamin B6 at doses of 1 and 1.5 g/day, for 2-7 weeks, showed that only the high doses increased erythrocyte magnesium. Similarly, magnesium balance studies in subjects receiving 500, 1,000 and 1,500 mg/day of vitamin B6 for 8 days showed that doses of 1 g or less had no effect upon the intestinal absorption of magnesium. In view of the existence of reversible neurological complications in subjects taking 2 g of pyridoxine per day, the use of very high doses of vitamin B6 must be considered as inadvisable, even if effective. A study of the long-term effects, and upon leukocyt…

Significant magnesium deficiency occurs in chronic alcoholism. The evidence depends on a number of related lines of evidence: hypomagnesemia, a number of clinical symptoms in common with patients with nonalcoholic causes of magnesium deficiency, induction of magnesium excretion by alcohol ingestion (167-260% of control values), positive magnesium balance on alcohol withdrawal (average 1.15 meq/kg), decreased exchangeable magnesium (28Mg, mean deficit 1.12 meq/kg), a mean deficit of 11.4 meq/kg of fat-free dry weight of muscle of alcoholic patients, and hypocalcemia responsive only to magnesium…

There is clinical, experimental and theoretical evidence for a connection between the occurrence of subclinical hypomagnesaemia and the incidence of milk fever. Clinically, pregnant dry cows in dairy herds with a high incidence of milk fever have often been observed to have subnormal blood magnesium concentrations. Experimentally, it has recently been shown that subclinical hypomagnesaemia reduced the ability of cows to mobilise calcium in response to hypocalcaemia; a response which is essential if cows are to avoid milk fever. And theoretically there are several points in the biochemical path…
