Ultrafast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences have changed the use of MRI to evaluate fetal abnormalities. Currently, the best application is the evaluation of suspected brain abnormalities found on ultrasound. MRI differentiates the various types of fetal ventriculomegaly. Superior posterior fossa visualization allows differentiation of Dandy-Walker malformation from a large cisterna magna. Anomalies of the corpus callosum can be seen. MRI also is valuable in the evaluation of fetal giant neck masses for planning delivery of the baby and surgery for life-threatening airway obstruction.

Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) of the kidneys has become a clinical standard for detecting renal artery stenosis. This test is performed by injecting a bolus of a gadolinium chelate and scanning with a three-dimensional volumetric data collection sensitized to the T1 shortening effects of gadolinium. Sixty patients were anesthesized for MRI. Intravenous and/or intramuscular anesthesia with ketamine, diazepam, pipolphen (promethazine) was supplemented by aminazine (chlorpromazine) or tisercin for adult patients. Spontaneous respiration was maintained, which helped avoid problems with endotracheal intubation and assisted ventilation. The method is safe, economic, and its side effects are negligible. Main features of MRI and specific anesthesiological problems associated with this method are discussed.

PURPOSE: We evaluated the prostate and seminal tract with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with hemospermia.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: To evaluate the prostate and seminal tract in 17 patients 20 to 59 years old (mean age 44) with hemospermia we performed transrectal ultrasound and MRI using an endorectal surface coil with a 1.5 tesla unit. Mean duration of hemospermia was 32 months (1 week to 16 years).

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging plays an important role in evaluation of ocular and orbital lesions. Ocular tumors can be distinguished and delineated from adjacent fluid collections. Demonstration of internal septa within a well-defined mass leads to the diagnosis of cavernous hemangioma, whereas vascularity and internal lobulations are the hallmark of capillary hemangiomas. MR is the procedure of choice for evaluation of the optic nerve sheath complex. It precisely delineates and characterizes optic neuritis, optic gliomas, and perioptic meningiomas.

MR imaging has emerged as the most accurate imaging modality for the evaluation of many conditions affecting the uterus. This technique can both define the normal internal anatomy of the uterus and monitor the physiologic responses of this organ to various endogenous and exogenous stimuli. A prospective study was carried out on 68 patients examined with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) under general anesthesia. Mean patients age was 10 years (range: 9 days to 77 years). As improvements in surface coil technology and imaging sequences continue, increased applicability of MRI to small yet complex structures such as the wrist is assured. Almost certainly, the full potential of MRI in the wrist has yet to be realized, and its versatility is perhaps limited only by the radiologist's experience. As we become more adept at this modality, it will become an increasingly important component in the radiology armamentarium.
