Shared Responsibility Decreases the Sense of Agency in the Human Brain.

Sharing responsibility in social decision-making helps individuals use the flexibility of the collective context to benefit themselves by claiming credit for good outcomes or avoiding the blame for bad outcomes. Using magnetoencephalography, we examined the neuronal basis of the impact that social context has on this flexible sense of responsibility. Participants performed a gambling task in various social contexts and reported feeling less responsibility when playing as a member of a team. A reduced magnetoencephalography outcome processing effect was observed as a function of decreasing resp

[Perisylvian magnetoencephalografic impairments in patients with autism spectrum disorders].

INTRODUCTION: The perisylvian areas, located around the Sylvian fissure, are constituted by frontal, temporal and parietal brain regions. These are connected forming specialized neural networks and play a primary role in the development of linguistic skills and social cognition. These areas are a possible neuronal substrate of cognitive and behavioral impairments in patients with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). AIM: To locate and quantify epileptiform activity sources through magnetoencephalography in frontal perisylvian areas in children with idiopathic ASD. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sixty-eig

A tutorial on fitting joint models of M/EEG and behavior to understand cognition.

We present motivation and practical steps necessary to find parameter estimates of joint models of behavior and neural electrophysiological data. This tutorial is written for researchers wishing to build joint models of human behavior and scalp and intracranial electroencephalographic (EEG) or magnetoencephalographic (MEG) data, and more specifically those researchers who seek to understand human cognition. Although these techniques could easily be applied to animal models, the focus of this tutorial is on human participants. Joint modeling of M/EEG and behavior requires some knowledge of exis

Robust estimation of 1/f activity improves oscillatory burst detection.

Neural oscillations often occur as transient bursts with variable amplitude and frequency dynamics. Quantifying these effects is important for understanding brain-behaviour relationships, especially in continuous datasets. To robustly measure bursts, rhythmical periods of oscillatory activity must be separated from arrhythmical background 1/f activity, which is ubiquitous in electrophysiological recordings. The Better OSCillation (BOSC) framework achieves this by defining a power threshold above the estimated background 1/f activity, combined with a duration threshold. Here we introduce a modi

Aggregation of scaffolding protein DISC1 dysregulates phosphodiesterase 4 in Huntington's disease.

Using a spatially filtered magnetoencephalography analysis (synthetic aperture magnetometry), we estimated neural activations in the Stroop task in nearly real time for schizophrenic patients with/without auditory hallucinations and for normal control subjects. In addition, auditory hallucinations were examined through the information processing flow of the brain neural network, including the frontal regions. One hundred unaveraged magnetoencephalography signals during the incongruent stimulus responses were analyzed with a time window of 200 ms in steps of 50 ms. In the 25-60-Hz band, cortica

Effects of regularity on the processing of sound omission in a tone sequence in musicians and non-musicians.

Numerous studies have reported that perceptual grouping affects the pre-attentive processing of sound omission in a sequence of tones. However, it remains unclear whether or not the perceptual grouping and musical experience affect the attentive processing of sound omission. To this end, we created a sequence of loud (L) and soft (S) tones grouped as 'LLSLLS…' and a random sequence of the L and S tones. The omission of the L tones was inserted pseudo-randomly in the random sequence, and there were two positions at which it was inserted. For within-group omission, the omission was after the fir

Oscillatory edge connectivity in pain-related regions supports machine learning identification of migraine.

BACKGROUND: Objective and interpretable brain signatures for migraine diagnosis and phenotyping remain limited. Edge-centric connectivity treats interregional connections as primary analytical units and captures higher-order, frequency-resolved coordination patterns that may not be detected by conventional node-based functional connectivity approaches. This study investigated whether resting-state magnetoencephalography-derived oscillatory edge-connectivity features within pain-related regions may provide mechanistic insights into migraine neuropathology and inform future research on complemen

Left-hemispheric atypicalities in the primary auditory cortex are associated with language comprehension and social skills in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Low-level auditory processing difficulties have been previously reported in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and some studies showed the relationship between these difficulties in the primary auditory cortex and language impairment in ASD. However, there is still a limited number of studies that comprehensively assess (i) amplitudes, latencies, and sensory gating effects in all early components of auditory processing (M50-M100-M200 complex) at the source level in magnetoencephalography with their relation to structural anatomy (gray matter volume, thickness, gyrification) (ii) and

Gamma band functional connectivity reduction in patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment and epileptiform activity.

There is growing evidence for neuronal hyperexcitability in Alzheimer's disease. Hyperexcitability is associated with an increase in epileptiform activity and the disruption of inhibitory activity of interneurons. Interneurons fire at a high rate and are frequently associated with high-frequency oscillations in the gamma frequency band (30-150 Hz). It is unclear how hyperexcitability affects the organization of functional brain networks. A sample of 63 amnestic mild cognitive impairment patients underwent a magnetoencephalography resting-state recording with eyes closed. Twenty (31.75%) mild c

Non-pharmacological treatment changes brain activity in patients with dementia.

Non-pharmacological treatment (NPT) improves cognitive functions and behavioural disturbances in patients with dementia, but the underlying neural mechanisms are unclear. In this observational study, 21 patients with dementia received NPTs for several months. Patients were scanned using magnetoencephalography twice during the NPT period to evaluate NPT effects on resting-state brain activity. Additionally, cognitive functions and behavioural disturbances were measured using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE-J) and a short version of the Dementia Behaviour Disturbance Scale (DBD-13) at th

Early functional network alterations in asymptomatic elders at risk for Alzheimer's disease.

Amyloid-β (Aβ) deposition is known to starts decades before the onset of clinical symptoms of Alzheimer's disease (AD), however, the detailed pathophysiological processes underlying this preclinical period are not well understood. This study aimed to investigate functional network alterations in cognitively intact elderly individuals at risk for AD, and assessed the association between these network alterations and changes in Aβ deposition, glucose metabolism, and brain structure. Forty-five cognitively normal elderly subjects, who were classified into Aβ-positive (CN+) and Aβ-negative (CN-) g

Sensor array design of optically pumped magnetometers for accurately estimating source currents.

An optically pumped magnetometer (OPM) is a new generation of magnetoencephalography (MEG) devices that is small, light, and works at room temperature. Due to these characteristics, OPMs enable flexible and wearable MEG systems. On the other hand, if we have a limited number of OPM sensors, we need to carefully design their sensor arrays depending on our purposes and regions of interests (ROIs). In this study, we propose a method that designs OPM sensor arrays for accurately estimating the cortical currents at the ROIs. Based on the resolution matrix of minimum norm estimate (MNE), our method

Reduced beta bursting underpins loss of corticomuscular coherence in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Biomarkers of disease activity that holistically capture motor system dysfunction are needed to accelerate drug discovery in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Magnetoencephalography is a sensitive, non-invasive measure of cortical neurophysiology. Corticomuscular coherence reflects the functional coupling of cortical oscillations with downstream muscle activity recorded by electromyography. Cortical beta frequency bursting is known to represent a core feature of the neurophysiology underpinning movement. This study aimed to characterize disruption of beta frequency activity in both cortex and mus

Altered development in auditory white matter and cortical response latency in youth with neurofibromatosis type I.

OBJECTIVES: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a genetic disorder that affects brain development and increases the risk for neurodevelopmental conditions, including autism spectrum disorder. Given similar behavioral phenotypes and potential shared neurobiological processes in NF1 and autism spectrum disorder, this study evaluates two markers of brain maturation in youth with NF1 and typically developing youth, including auditory white matter and cortical response latency. BASIC METHODS: Participants, aged 8-12 years, completed a multimodal neuroimaging protocol that included MRI with diffusion

Epilepsy surgery in MRI-negative epilepsies.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This study discusses the challenges of MRI-negative epilepsy surgery, and the strategies in using advanced MRI and functional imaging tests and their associated postsurgical outcome. RECENT FINDINGS: Several methods for processing MRI postacquisition data have identified either previously undetectable or overlooked MRI abnormalities. The resection of these abnormalities is associated with excellent postsurgical seizure control. There have been major advances in functional imaging as well, one of which is the application of statistical parametric mapping analysis for compari

Two Distinct Neural Mechanisms Underlying Acupuncture Analgesia.

Acupuncture analgesia is a traditional treatment with a long history, although it lacks scientific evidence. It is reportedly associated with the central nervous system, including various brain regions, from the cortices to the brain stem. However, it remains unclear whether the distributed regions behave as a single unit or consist of multiple sub-units playing different roles. Magnetoencephalography is a neuroimaging technique that can measure the oscillatory frequency of neural signals and brain regions. The frequency band of neural signals allows further understanding of the characteristic
