T cells of the immune system respond only to foreign antigens because those cells with reactivity for self proteins are either deleted during their development or rendered nonresponsive (anergic). The maintenance of the nonresponsive state was found to require the continual exposure of the anergic T cells to antigen. When anergic T cells were removed from the self antigen by adoptive transfer to a mouse strain lacking the antigen or by in vitro culture, nonresponsiveness was reversed and the anergic cells returned to normal functional status.

The relationship between the rate of cattle infection with leptospirosis and the total number of livestock at cattle-breeding farms has been established. The annual dynamics of this infection has been found to give two morbidity rises among the animals, occurring not due to their contacts with the natural foci of leptospirosis, but as a consequence of the animal vertical and horizontal "circulation". ECT is a reliable treatment of serious affective disorders more efficacious than antidepressants either used alone or combined with mood stabilizers or neuroleptics. Estimates of the prevalence of hearing impairment individuals over 65 years old are on the order of 30 percent. Although the psychosocial consequences of hearing impairment may be profound, less than 20 percent of hearing-impaired adults use hearing aids to compensate for their hearing loss. Primary care physicians play a vital role in identifying hearing impairment in the elderly and in assisting the older adult in obtaining rehabilitative services, including hearing aids.
