Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the breast is very rare in males. There have been only eight previous articles published on breast ACC in males. Here, we will report on the first case of this type of tumor in the Chinese province of Hainan. The patient was a 19-year-old male, and he underwent a radical mastectomy (RM) with axillary lymph node dissection. The histopathological examination specimen revealed that surgical margins were negative; none of the 41 axillary lymph nodes excised were positive for malignancy. The patient is alive and well 67 months after radical mastectomy. In the prese

Stewart-Treves Syndrome is characterized by the presence of lymphangiosarcoma on limb extremities. Rare, it occurs in 0.5% of patients who have undergone radical mastectomy with axillary node dissection. The main cause is chronic lymphedema with endothelial and lymphatic differentiation, with no direct relationship to breast cancer. Seven years after a radical right-side mastectomy with lymph node dissection and adjuvant therapy, the patient developed a lesion on her right arm. The dermatological examination revealed an erythematous nodule with bleeding surface on chronic right forearm lymphed

The study was concerned with establishing parallel clinico-roentgeno-morphological features in diagnosis of lesions in axillary lymph nodes in 128 breast cancer patients. Complex evaluation of lymphographic and palpation evidence proved valuable because its application allows to avoid diagnostic errors for a certain stage of the disease. Also the results of X-ray postoperative evaluation of radicality of lymphadenectomies carried out in 100 mastectomies after Halsted, 22 mastectomies after Patey and 15 axillary lymphadenectomies are presented. Relatively less extent of excision for breast canc

The report describes a clinical trial on conservative surgery in progress at the National Cancer Institute of Milan, Italy. The randomized clinical trial compares radical mastectomy with a more conservative procedure consisting of mammary resection plus axillary dissection plus radiotherapy. The resection comprises an entire quadrant of the breast together with the overlying skin and the corresponding portion of the fascial sheet of the pectoralis major. The axillary dissection is performed in continuity with the resected breast quadrant except in cases with tumors of lower inner quadrants, wh

Primary lymphoma of the breast is rare, accounting for 1.7-2.2% of extranodal lymphomas and 0.38-0.7% of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL). The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinicopathological features and treatment outcomes of patients with primary breast lymphomas (PBL). We conducted a retrospective review of the NHL cases diagnosed at Korea Cancer Center Hospital between 1989 and 2002. Nine (0.9%) of the 1,050 cases fulfilled the criteria for PBL. All patients were women (median age, 45 years) and usually presented with breast masses that had recently become enlarged. Six cases involve

It has been 131 years since Halsted reported radical mastectomy to treat breast cancer in 1894. The concept of "R0 resection" as the most important treatment strategy has significantly contributed to improving the survival rate of patients with breast cancer. With deep understanding of the mechanism of tumorigenesis and advancements in systematic treatment since the 20th century, modified radical mastectomy proposed by Patey and Auchincloss, aimed to improve quality of life, replaced radical mastectomy and became the mainstream surgery for breast cancer. Based on NSABP-B06 trial, the 2025 St. Gall

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: No clinical trials comparing the characteristics of sensory blockade caused by various local anaesthetics in thoracic paravertebral blockade have been published. The aim of this prospective study was a clinical assessment of sensory blockade after paravertebral injection of ropivacaine or bupivacaine in patients undergoing modified radical mastectomy.
METHODS: Seventy ASA I-II patients were randomized to receive a single injection of ropivacaine 0.5% (n = 35) or bupivacaine 0.5% (n = 35) at the T4 level. General anaesthesia with propofol and fentanyl was provided dur

Surgical techniques for breast cancer patients with early stages of disease are discussed. In situ cancers (LCIS, microscopic DCIS, and gross DCIS) present different risks and natural histories, and thus different treatment options are advised. For Stage I and earlier Stage II patients, either modified radical mastectomy or breast preservation with limited resection, axillary dissection, and subsequent breast irradiation are described. Immediate (or delayed) breast reconstruction offers other options for mastectomy patients.

AIMS: The use of live animals for surgical training is a well-known, deliberated topic. However, medical students who use live animals rate the experience high not only in improving their surgical techniques, but also positively influencing their confidence levels in the operating room later in their careers. Therefore, we hypothesized that the use of live animal models is a unique and influential component of preclinical medical education.

The management of 63 carcinomas in situ of the breast is reviewed. These 63 carcinomas in situ occurred among 575 carcinomas of the breast from 1969 to 1973. The treatment consisted of simple mastectomy. In cases of early invasion the axilla was explored by palpation of the adipose tissue for enlarged lymph nodes. None were found and no extirpation of the axillary nodes was carried out. Of 59 patients with carcinoma in situ of the breast, 3 later had a local recurrence. Two patients later died of distant metastases. In view of these inadequate results of simple mastectomy it is recommended tha

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to explore the clinical characteristics, diagnosis, treatment, and prognostic factors of dermatosis associated with malignant breast tumors. CASE REPORTS: The clinical data of 4 breast cancer patients, 3 with dermatomyositis and 1 with acquired ichthyosis, were analyzed retrospectively. The 4 patients were >50 years of age, and the malignant breast tumors appeared within 5 years of the diagnosis of dermatosis. Two of the 3 breast cancer patients with dermatomyositis received a modified radical mastectomy, and because they could not afford systemic chemothe

We present a case of chronic lymphoedema that progressed to Stewart-Treves syndrome in a 63-year-old woman with a previous modified radical mastectomy, associated lymph node dissection, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. While producing stabilisation of most cutaneous lesions initially, chemotherapeutic treatment of the angiosarcoma did not prevent subsequent metastasis and patient death. We urge vigilance and regular follow-up appointments for patients following a mastectomy with chronic lymphoedema to facilitate prevention or early treatment of this devastating syndrome.

Fifty subcutaneous mastectomy specimens, each of which were removed from a patient who had previously undergone radical or modified radical mastectomy of the contralateral breast for carcinoma, were age and date matched to a control group of patients with which carcinoma was not associated. The patients were evaluated with regard to specific types of epithelial proliferative lesions and other entities of fibrocystic disease without knowledge of their group membership. The results included a statistically significant dominance of certain epithelial hyperplasias in the study population and a lac

INTRODUCTION: Radiation-induced angiosarcoma is a rare but very aggressive tumour. The highest risk of sarcoma development is in patients after breast-conserving surgery.Case 1: The 66 years old patient underwent radical mastectomy with axillary dissection because of ductal carcinoma with consequent radiotherapy, chemotherapy and hormonal therapy. After 6 years, high-grade angiosarcoma was diagnosed and resected with negative resection margins. Within subsequent 24 months, additional three radical re-excisions were performed because of repeated sarcoma recurrence. 29 months from the diagnosis

A better understanding of the locoregional and systemic approaches to breast cancer over the past decade and one-half has altered the perspective on surgical management of the axilla. An increased awareness of the importance of early diagnosis and appropriate staging has focused further attention on the extent of resection of axillary lymph nodes. Examined here are the anatomy and physiology of the axillary lymph nodes, their clinical evaluation, the significance of histologic evaluation, a discussion of the procedure's role in staging and therapy, and a presentation of the complications of ax

BACKGROUND: The efficacy and safety of nipple-sparing mastectomy and areola-sparing mastectomy for the treatment of breast cancer are still questionable. It is estimated that the local recurrence rates following nipple-sparing mastectomy are very similar to breast-conserving surgery followed by radiotherapy.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the efficacy and safety of nipple-sparing mastectomy and areola-sparing mastectomy for the treatment of ductal carcinoma in situ and invasive breast cancer in women.
SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Breast Cancer Group's Specialized Register, the Cochrane Ce

Current trials are aimed at determining whether less radical surgery or irradiation is equivalent to radical or modified radical mastectomy. Axillary node involvement is the most reliable indicator of prognosis. Patients with axillary node involvement and no other detectable disease should be considered for adjuvant chemotherapy. Steroid receptor analysis furnishes valuable information on prognosis and aids in treatment planning. Hormonal manipulation and/or combination chemotherapy can offer significant prolongation of life and amelioration of symptoms in many patients with advanced disease.

Occult breast cancer is defined by the presence of axillary metastases without an identifiable primary breast tumor. Here, we report a rare case of a male occult breast cancer with dermatomyositis. We performed a modified radical mastectomy consisting of whole breast mastectomy and axillary lymph node dissection. Immunohistochemistry and fluorescent in situ hybridization analyses demonstrated an adenocarcinoma likely of breast origin, which was an occult triple-negative breast cancer. Interestingly, the patient's previously noted periorbital dermatomyositis resolved promptly following surgical

BACKGROUND: Two-stage implant breast reconstruction is the most commonly performed breast reconstruction procedure. Limited data exist regarding reconstruction complication rates examined by mastectomy indication.
METHODS: Patients who underwent two-stage implant breast reconstruction at Yale New Haven Hospital from 2011 to 2017 were included in the study. Perioperative complications were compared. Chi-square analysis, t tests, and Fisher's exact tests were used to determine significant associations. A binary logistic regression was used to determine variables with a significant impact on the
