The authors quantitatively measured levels of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP), tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMP), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in blood samples of POEMS syndrome. Circulating levels of MMP-1, -2, -3, -9, and TIMP-1 were more increased in patients with POEMS syndrome than in patients with other neurologic disorders or in healthy controls. Serum levels of VEGF and TIMP-1 were strongly correlated with each other. Increased circulating levels of MMP-1, -2, -3, -9, and TIMP-1 may lead to a better understanding the pathogenesis of POEMS syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disease with weakness in striated musculature due to anti-acetylcholine receptor (AChR) antibodies or muscle specific kinase at the neuromuscular junction. A subgroup of patients has periocular symptoms only; ocular MG (OMG). Matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) are increased in several autoimmune diseases, including generalized MG (GMG), and have been suggested to play a role in immune cell infiltration, basement membrane breakdown and autoimmune pathogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are crucial in the inflammatory and remodeling phases of wound healing. We previously reported the correlation between pro-inflammatory cytokines and timing of successful combat-wound closure. We now extend our studies to investigate the correlation between wound-remodeling MMP expression and wound healing.
METHODS: Thirty-eight wounds in 25 patients with traumatic extremity combat wounds were prospectively studied. Surgical debridement with vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) device application was repeated every 48 to 72h until surgical wound closure.

Tooth eruption involves extensive degradation and reorganization of extracellular matrix (ECM) components. It is not known how ECM-degrading enzymes are coordinated with each other or how they are regulated in the event. The present study was designed to investigate mRNA expression of inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) in comparison with matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) as well as ECM molecules during rat first molar eruption using in situ hybridization.
