Oral Myiasis Caused by Chrysomya bezziana in Anterior Maxilla.

Oral myiasis is a rare pathology and is associated with poor oral hygiene, alcoholism, senility, suppurating lesions, and severe halitosis. It arises from invasion of body tissues or cavities of living animals by maggots or larvae of certain dipterian flies. It is mostly reported in developing countries and in the tropics. We hereby report a rare case of oral myiasis in a 70-year-old female with extensive necrotic oral lesion burrowing into the hard palate through which numerous live maggots (larvae) and seen emerging out and discuss the definition, etiology, predisposing factors, classificati

Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor of the maxilla (Pindborg tumor).

Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT), or the Pindborg tumor, is very rare neoplasm, which accounts up to 1% of all odontogenic tumors. These tumors involve mandible almost twice as common as the maxillary bone, mostly in the premolar and molar region and present at first with local swelling. There is no gender predilection and the tumor usually appears between 2nd and 6th decade of life. We report the case of a 36-year-old male patient with a Pindborg tumor in the maxillary region on the right side, also involving the adjacent maxillary sinus, with destroying of the local anatomical …

Le Fort I distraction osteogenesis of the edentulous maxilla.

Rehabilitation of the edentulous patient with atrophic ridges is a problem especially when compounded with a severe prognathic inter-arch re … pancy (more than 15 mm) by performing distraction osteogenesis at Le Fort I level using an internal maxillary distraction device. This method is a simple, predictable and stable option for the correction of a severe, unfavourable intermaxillary relation in edentulous patients.

[Giant cell lesions of the maxilla disclosing primary hyperparathyroidism].

We report 2 cases of giant-cell lesions of the maxilla in two female patients aged 42 and 22 years. The initial diagnosis was giant-cell tumor and giant-cell repair granuloma. The diagnosis of brown tumor was established at discovery of primary hyperparathyroidism. We emphasize the importance of searching for hyperparathyroidism in patients with a giant-cell lesion of the maxilla.

Postero-lateral expansion osteotomy of maxilla. A case report.

The posterior-maxillary osteotomy introduced by Schuchardt was designed to close skeletal anterior open bite. Also, it can be used to reduce a posterior cross bite. But in this latter case, the most important problem is the difficulty in expanding the maxilla because of the relative inelasticity of the palatal mucosa. This paper reports on the result obtained by a surgical expansion technique without orthodontic treatment. The use of a local soft tissue flap is necessary; the anteroposterior part of the palatal incision is placed contralaterally to the bone incision. A palatal appliance is use…

Intraosseous Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma of the Maxilla Mimicking an Odontogenic Lesion.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is the most common malignant neoplasm of salivary gland origin, accounting for approximately 27% of all saliv … of intraosseous MEC in a 52-year-old male, initially presenting as a recurrent cystic lesion in the maxilla. The case underscores the diagnostic difficulty posed by its unusual histopathological features.

Low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma of the maxilla: A diagnosis not to be missed.

Low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma (LGFMS) is a rare malignant spindle cell neoplasm that characteristically involves the trunk and extremities. The bland morphological appearance of the tumor makes it notoriously difficult for the pathologist to identify in routine microscopic sections especially when the tumor is located at unconventional sites. This ensues significant therapeutic implications as the tumor is known for long-standing distant metastasis. This case involves a 48-year-old lady who was diagnosed with this tumor at an extremely uncommon site as maxilla. The case report highlights the i…

Conservative Management of Odontogenic Fibromyxoma of the Maxilla: A Case Report.

Odontogenic fibromyxoma typically presents as painless swelling in the jaw, and clinically, it grows slowly, becoming benign and asymptomatic. It causes the cortical plates to expand gradually, which leads to mobility and drifting of the teeth. Root resorption is also common. The tumor is locally aggressive in nature. It is also known to have a high recurrence rate. We present the case of a 30-year-old female patient who was diagnosed and treated for odontogenic fibromyxoma of the maxilla conservatively with enucleation. The radiograph showed a multilocular lesion, which can be confused with a…

Central hemangioma of the maxilla: variance in clinical and radiographic features.

Central hemangioma is a rare benign proliferation of blood vessels most often seen in the vertebral column and skull, but rarely in the jaws. It mainly occurs in the second decade of life with a female predilection. The diagnosis of central hemangioma is challenging due to its variable clinical and radiological characteristics and low incidence in the jaws. This article presents two cases of maxillary central hemangioma, analyzing their clinical, radiographic, and histological features and comparing them with existing literature on central hemangioma.

Accessory Maxilla in a Tessier 07 Cleft - A Case Report.

THE RATIONALE: Accessory maxilla is a rare condition often associated with Tessier type-7 clefts with fewer than 25 cases recorded in the literature. This manuscript reports a unilateral accessory maxilla with six supernumerary teeth. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 5-1/2-year-old boy, a treated macrostomia case, on follow-up visit showed evidence of accessory maxilla with teeth on radiological examination. The structure was interfering with growth, and hence, surgical removal was planned. DIAGNOSIS: Based on clinical history, diagnosis and imaging, accessory maxilla with supernumerary teeth was diagnos…

Non-Surgical Ciliated Cyst of the Maxilla - An Unconventional Variant.

The term surgical ciliated cyst of the maxilla is a designation for cysts of the maxillary sinus conventionally associated with surgery and trauma. Surgical ciliated cysts with a noncontributory history of surgery or trauma can pose a diagnostic challenge. We report an interesting case of ciliated cyst of the maxilla in a 54-year-old male patient. The present case provides a plausible explanation for the occurrence of ciliated cyst of the maxilla lacking history of surgery or trauma.

A case of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the maxilla with orbital cellulitis.

Bisphosphonates are used for the treatment of bone metastases of cancer and prevention of osteoporosis. Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) has unclear mechanisms, but its elucidation, prevention, and treatment are essential to improve patient outcomes. An 88-year-old woman who was taking oral bisphosphonates for 4 years presented with a 5-day history of gradual orbital pain. Computed tomography (CT) revealed bilateral maxillary sinusitis and bony destruction at the base of the right maxillary sinus and inferior orbital wall. We diagnosed her with bisphosphonate-related oste…

Painless osteoid osteoma in the maxilla of an elderly female patient.

Osteoid osteoma is an osteoblastic benign bone tumor more frequent in long bones of young male patients. It is the third most commonly diagnosed benign bone tumor and has distinctive symptomatology, nocturnal pain that relieves with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Nowadays, total resection is the preferred management. In the present paper, an unusual variant in the maxilla of a female elderly patient without previous symptomatology is exposed; it was surgically removed without signs of reappearance in 12 months of follow-up. Although it is not a common site of appearance, the manifestati…

Influence of bisphosphonates on clinical features of osteoradionecrosis of the maxilla and mandible.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is one of the most severe adverse effects of radiotherapy (RT) to the head and neck region. … d from medical charts. RESULTS: Osteoradionecrosis more often involved the mandibular jaw than the maxillary jaw for both patient groups. However, maxillary involvement was more common among patients who received bisphosphonates than those who did not (p = 0.014). There was also a trend toward earlier development of ORN in the group that received bisphos …
