The pioneers of the sinus maxillaris diaphanoscopy (transillumination).

As soon as Edison's lamp was introduced in Europe at the end of 19th century, three ENT surgeons emerged as the pioneers of maxillary sinus diaphanoscopy. Cozzolino was the first to introduce an Edison lamp through the mouth into the oropharynx to inspect the nasal fossae. Voltolini, by moving the lamp forward into the mouth, discovered the maxillary sinus diaphanoscopy. Heryng codified the clinical significance of the maxillary sinus diaphanoscopy.

The maxillary sinus floor in the oral implantology.

UNLABELLED: The aim of this study was to establish the mean distances between the maxillary sinus floor and the roots of the lateral maxillary teeth in dentate subjects, respectively the mean height of the available bone for oral implant placement in the corresponding area, in edentulous ones. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We determined the maxillary sinus floor position in relation to morphoclinical alveolodental benchmarks on 50 dry skulls, dentate 30 and edentulous 20, and correlations were performed by use of 40 CT-scans of the targeted area. In addition, 20 human adult cadavers were bilaterally …

[Ameloblastoma of the maxillary sinus--a case report].

Ameloblastoma (adamantinoma) is a benign neoplasm deriving from the enamel organ. Its etiology has not been ultimately determined. It constitutes about 1% of all head and neck tumours, and about 11% of teeth-originating tumours. Usually it occurs in the mandible near premolar and molar teeth, more rarely in its anterior part. About 20% of described cases of ameloblastoma relate to the jaw, its very rare location is gingiva or cheak tunica mucosa. The essay presents a case of ameloblastoma of a maxillary sinus in a 65-year-old man. The diagnostic and treatment algorithm in ameloblastoma is disc…

Traumatic dislocation of the globe into the maxillary sinus.

CASE REPORT: We report a case of traumatic dislocation of the globe into the maxillary sinus following a bull-riding incident. COMMENTS: Traumatic dislocations of the eye into the sinuses are rare, and urgent management and surgical repair are indicated.

[Ectopic molar tooth in the maxillary sinus].

The development of intranasal ectopic teeth is rare. Although they are more commonly seen in the palate and maxillary sinus, they can also be found in the mandibular condyle, coronoid process, and nasal cavity. A 30-year-old male patient presented with a complaint of headache. Computed tomography of the paranasal sinuses showed a bony mass in the right maxillary sinus wall, 1 cm in size. He did not have any history of maxillofacial trauma or operation. The mass was removed via a Caldwell-Luc procedure. It looked like a tooth. Histopathologic diagnosis was made as ectopic molar tooth. The patie…

Traumatic dislocation of the globe into the maxillary sinus.

The complete traumatic dislocation of the globe into the maxillary sinus is a very rare event. Due to the intense force affecting the orbit, the impact on the globe and its accompanying structures is normally very severe. A case is reported of complete dislocation of the globe into the maxillary sinus with nearly complete recovery of vision and motility.

Mucopyocele of the maxillary sinus: a case report.

Mucoceles are defined as chronic, cystic lesions in the paranasal sinuses. When the mucocele content becomes infected, the lesion is defined as mucopyocele. Involvement of the maxillary sinus is rare. A 26-year-old male patient presented with left-sided facial swelling and nasal obstruction that had a history of six months. He had several episodes of sinus infections treated with antibiotics. His visual acuity was not affected. A computed tomography scan showed complete opacification of the left maxillary sinus with expansion through the medial wall of the antrum and hard palate, and thinning …

Spherulocytosis of the maxillary sinus: a case report.

Spherulocytosis (myospherulosis) is an unusual foreign-body reaction usually occurring in tissues exposed to petrolatum-based products. Due to its occasional localization in the maxillary sinus, it is of interest to rhinologists and maxillofacial surgeons. The pathogenesis of spherulocytosis has remained a matter of controversy. We present the case of a 40-year-old female with no previous contact to petrolatum-based substances and suffering from spherulocytosis of the maxillary sinus. The review of literature with emphasis on etiopathogenesis and factors that predispose to the development of s…

Concurrent chromomycosis and aspergillosis of the maxillary sinus.

The authors describe a rare case of an infection of both the chromomycosis and aspergillosis of the maxillary sinus in an immunocompetent 72-year-old female who presented with progressive visual loss and dull aching pain of the left eye. Sinuscopy of the left maxillary sinus showed swelling of the mucosa with clay-like materials. Biopsy from the left maxillary sinus showed the typically characteristic morphology of chromomycosis and culture from sinus tissue which yielded Aspergillus. The patient responded to a combination therapy of surgical excision and antifungal agent.

[Unusual metastasis of hypernephroma in the maxillary sinus].

BACKGROUND: Metastases of infraclavicular malignancies to the nose and paranasal sinuses are characterized by their untypical symptoms and late clinical manifestation. Metastases of renal carcinoma on paranasal cavities may be highly vasculared and can cause profuse bleeding. PATIENT: We report a rare case of a 60-year-old man who suffered from a large metastatic hypernephroma to the right maxillary sinus. Intermittent epistaxis and pain were the first symptoms. The patient had undergone a tumor nephrectomy six months previously. The endonasal biopsy of the vascular tumor caused abundant blee…

[Aspergillosis of maxillary sinus: a case report].

A case of semi-invasive maxillary aspergillosis that presented with epiphora and responded well to surgical treatment is reported. Sixteen percent of cases of chronic sinusitis are produced by mycosis (particularly aspergillosis). The infection may be limited to the affected sinus (non-invasive forms) or may destroy the sinus wall, without tissue invasion (semi-invasive forms) or with tissue invasion (invasive forms). The diagnosis is mainly histological. Cultures present a high percentage of false positives and negatives. Treatment consists of surgical debridement of the sinus. Systemic ampho

[Tumor of the maxillary sinus with orbital invasion].

The authors report the case of an epidermoid carcinoma, originating from the maxillary sinus, with orbital extension. The first harmless symptoms can mislead the diagnosis. Other signs will appear a few weeks later leading to a tumoral process. The further examinations will confirm the fears.

Aggressive fibrous dysplasia of the maxillary sinus.

Fibrous dysplasia is usually a slowly progressive, benign disease that develops over several years and presents with deformity or mild symptomatology. Five of 34 patients (ages 4-21 years), who were subsequently diagnosed histologically as having fibrous dysplasia of the maxillary sinus, rapidly developed soft tissue masses of the malar region over a period of less than 4 months with accompanying pain (2 patients) and nasal obstruction and exophthalmos (2 patients). Each was clinically suspected of having a sarcoma; two had been thought to have an "osteofibrosarcoma" on initial biopsy at outsi…

Actinomycosis mimicking carcinoma of the maxillary sinus.

Human actinomycosis may pose a diagnostic problem at times and is often mistaken for a neoplasm. A thirty-five year old male was clinically diagnosed as a case of carcinoma of the right maxillary sinus on the basis of history, clinical presentation and radiologic findings. Tissue biopsy was negative for malignancy on three consecutive occasions. Microscopic examination showed bits of granulation tissue and fragments of filamentous structures. On microbiological examination, Actinomyces israelii was isolated and fungus culture was negative. Long term Penicillin treatment caused disappearance of…
