Forensic dermatology and the crime scene investigation (CSI) effect: Are jurors influenced by forensic dermatologic investigations that they view on television, printed media, and the internet?

The crime scene investigation effect manifests as unrealistic attitudes among jurors based on fictional crime scene cases they have seen on television; jurors are influenced by the accuracy of forensic evidence and the speed with which these televised cases are resolved, and they expect the same standards they observe on television to be upheld in the courtroom. The definition of the crime scene investigation effect can be expanded to include information accessible not only from magazines that are readily available to the public but also from the internet and social media because these sources

Perceptions of Sports Betting and Promotions in the U.S.: Evidence from a Mixed-Methods Sentiment Analysis of YouTube Comments.

This study examines public attitudes toward sports betting and promotions in the United States by analyzing YouTube comments. Using keyword searches, 210 videos were identified, yielding 2,369 comments for analysis. A hybrid approach combining automated BERT sentiment analysis with human-coded content analysis was employed to determine overall sentiment and to identify key themes, endorsers, and sportsbook brands. Results revealed a predominance of negative and neutral sentiments, with positive sentiments least frequent. BERT detected more negative sentiments than the human-coded analysis, whi

Constructing HIV/AIDS in Chinese media (2010-2024): A mixed-methods study.

In China, where HIV/AIDS remains one of the leading causes of infectious disease-related mortality, traditional media significantly shape public perceptions amid persistent prevention challenges. This study examines a large-scale corpus of news articles published between 2010 and 2024 to understand the evolving media discourse surrounding HIV/AIDS. Employing Analysis of Topic Model Networks (ANTMN) and collocation analysis, we extract the thematic networks, terminology for people living with HIV (PLHIV), and HIV/AIDS metaphors. Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) and network backbone method

Planning and Implementing Social Media Communication in a Public Health Crisis: An Analytical Perspective.

ISSUE ADDRESSED: The use of social media as a public communication tool by public health service organisations (PHSOs) gained prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, as the pandemic evolved into a prolonged public health crisis, PHSOs faced challenges in effectively engaging the public with crisis directives. Despite its growing importance, there is scant research on how PHSOs formulated and implemented their social media communication plans as part of their pandemic management. METHODS: Textual analysis and quality appraisal of the first COVID-19 pandemic management plans and the p

Baseline emotional distress predicts psychological response to a social media reduction intervention in distressed youth: a precision mental health approach.

Reducing social media use (SMU) leads to small reductions in anxiety and depressive symptoms. However, most studies have been conducted with healthy populations, which may limit observed effects due to floor effects rather than indicating a weak causal link. Youth with elevated anxiety and depression symptoms may be more vulnerable to social media harms and benefit more from reduction, but experimental evidence remains limited for symptomatic samples. The present study examined whether youth with elevated symptoms of anxiety and depression show greater psychological benefits from reducing SMU

Arterial intima-media thickness, endothelial function, and apolipoproteins in adolescents frequently exposed to tobacco smoke.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to tobacco smoke is associated with markers of preclinical atherosclerosis in adults, but its effect on arterial structure in adolescents is unknown. METHODS AND RESULTS: Healthy 13-year-old adolescents from the atherosclerosis prevention trial STRIP were studied. Maximum carotid and aortic intima-media thickness and brachial artery flow-mediated dilation were measured in 494 adolescents using high-resolution ultrasound. Serum lipid, lipoprotein, and apolipoprotein (Apo) A-I and B concentrations were determined using standard methods. Exposure to tobacco smoke was measure

[Alcohol in the media, marketing communications, and consumption behaviors].

Alcohol consumption is one of the leading risk factors for morbidity and mortality worldwide. Alcohol marketing communications play a central role in shaping social norms and drinking behaviors. The rapid expansion of digital media has transformed alcohol promotion, increasing its reach, personalization, and integration into daily life. Exposure to alcohol marketing communications is associated with earlier initiation of drinking, increased consumption, and more intense drinking patterns, particularly among adolescents and young adults. Alcohol marketing communication, including in the digital

Exposure to drug-related online content and drug use among racial/ethnic minority youth in the United States.

Studies of high-risk digital media use often treat youth in the United States as a monolith. Here, we present results from an online survey study of 489 U.S. youth (aged 13-23) assessing relationships between drug-related online content exposure and drug use based on racial/ethnic identity. Regression models identified racial/ethnic differences in drug-related content exposure and interaction terms examined whether relationships of interest changed based on racial/ethnic identity. Racial/ethnic (RE)-minority youth had significantly higher odds of frequent exposure to drug-related content onlin

Rhinovirus C15 Attenuates Relaxation and cAMP Production in Human Airways and Smooth Muscle.

Rhinoviruses (RVs) evoke as many as 85% of acute asthma exacerbations in children and 50% in adults and can induce airway hyperresponsiveness and decrease efficacy of current therapeutics to provide symptom relief. Using human precision-cut lung slices (hPCLSs), primary human air-liquid interface-differentiated airway epithelial cells (HAECs), and human airway smooth muscle (HASM) as preclinical experimental models, we demonstrated that RV-C15 attenuates agonist-induced bronchodilation. Specifically, airway relaxation to formoterol and cholera toxin, but not forskolin (Fsk), was attenuated fol
