BACKGROUND: Mediastinal bronchogenic cysts are sporadic congenital tumors, accounting for approximately 10%-15% of all mediastinal masses. In most cases, they remain asymptomatic. We present a case of a young man with new-onset atrial fibrillation caused by extra cardiac compression of the left atrium by mediastinal bronchogenic cyst. We report the first documented case in our country of a patient with a mediastinal bronchogenic cyst presenting with cardiac symptoms.
CASE SUMMARY: A 39-year-old man was admitted to the emergency department with palpitations, dyspnea, and tachycardia that devel

Giant teratomas with bilateral mediastinal extension are rare. The present case report highlights the challenging resection of a giant anterior mediastinal cystic teratoma extending bilaterally using video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), rendering it one of the largest mediastinal teratomas managed with VATS in the current literature. A 47-year-old woman presented with a 1-year history of central chest pain. The physical examination did not reveal any notable findings. A computed tomography coronary angiogram revealed a thin-walled cyst in the anterior mediastinum, measuring ~12x10x9 cm…

INTRODUCTION: The mediastinal bronchogenic cysts represents 50%-60% of mediastinal cysts and rarely occurs in the posterior mediastinum. The final surgical resection is indicated for symptomatic patients and is recommended for some asymptomatic patients in order to establish the diagnosis and to avoid any subsequent complications.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of 17 years-old male suffering from bronchogenic cysts of the mediastinum. The patient was admitted to our hospital complaining with dry chough and dyspnea; CT scan showed a cystic mass in posterior mediastinum. To achieve a corre…

A case of testicular teratocarcinoma metastatic to a mediastinal lymph node and associated with a mediastinal lesion indistinguishable from an enteric cyst is presented. It is postulated that the mediastinal enteric cyst-like lesion resulted from histologic maturation of metastatic teratocarcinoma after intensive chemotherapy. The basis in the medical literature for this postulate is detailed.

Ectopic pancreas (EP) is typically found within other gastrointestinal organs. Its discovery in other parts of the body, especially in the mediastinum, is exceedingly rare. This paper presents a case of a 17-year-old female patient with EP in a large, rapidly growing thymic cyst. She presented to our institution with persistent chest pain. Video-assisted thoracic surgery revealed a mediastinal mass in the setting of pleural effusion. Analysis of the fluid contents of the mass and the pleural effusion demonstrated high levels of pancreatic amylase, which supported the presence of pancreatic tis

We report a case of an intrapulmonary bronchogenic cyst that radiologically mimicked a cystic tumor of the middle mediastinum. During video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, the lesion was confirmed to be in the lung parenchyma rather than in the mediastinum. A video-assisted thoracoscopic anterior basal segmentectomy was eventually performed, and an intrapulmonary bronchogenic cyst was the diagnosis based on histology.

Bronchogenic cysts are congenital anomalies which occur most commonly within the mediastinum. They may become complicated by fistula formation with the bronchial tree. We report a case of an adult male where such a complication occurred between the time of the patient's chest radiograph and his examination by computed tomography (CT). We believe that this is the first reported CT demonstration of an air-fluid level within a mediastinal bronchogenic cyst, in a typical site, presumed to be caused by rupture into the bronchial tree.

This study explores the clinical efficacy of perioperative application of fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FB) combined with thoracoscopic minimally invasive surgery for mediastinal bronchogenic cysts in children. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 48 pediatric patients with mediastinal tumors who were admitted to our hospital from January 2015 to December 2023. Postoperative pathological results confirmed the diagnosis of bronchogenic cysts. The patients, aged 1 to 8 years (mean 4.8 ± 1.59 years), included 27 males and 21 females. Group A (25 cases) underwent preoperative and postoperative FB

Mediastinal cysts (MCs) are rare lesions that can arise from embryonic remnants of various mediastinal structures. MCs usually are incidental findings in dogs and cats; however, they can reach a mass-like appearance. The description of MCs on CT in dogs is limited. This retrospective, single-center, descriptive, prevalence study aimed to determine the prevalence of presumed mediastinal cysts (PMCs) in dogs and assess their CT characteristics. Dogs that underwent a thoracic CT scan from January 2019 to August 2021 were included. CT images were evaluated for the presence of PMCs by two diagnosti…

Bronchogenic cysts are congenital abnormalities generally mediastinal and are frequently detected incidentally. We report a case of a symptomatic mediastinal cyst treated previously by video-assisted thoracoscopy (VATS) but complicated by pericystic adhesions. The subsequent incomplete excision led, after 8 months, to a cyst's recurrence that was accurately drained by endobronchial ultrasonography-guided fine needle aspiration (EBUS-FNA), with no new regrowth after 18 months. We hypothesized that the support of a high-definition diagnostic tool (EBUS) improved the FNA ability to make a deep an…

A peculiar echocardiographic pattern was recorded in a case of cystic teratoma of the left anterior and upper mediastinum, causing a mild stenosis at the pulmonary valve level. The usefulness of echocardiography in the evaluation of anterior mediastinal masses as they distort normal cardiac anatomy is discussed.

A new method for preoperative diagnosis of mediastinal cysts is described. A transbronchial puncture of a mediastinal cystic tumor was performed in one patient with a mediastinal enlargement and stenosis of the right main bronchus. Afer aspiration of fluid material a water-soluble contrast medium was instilled under fluoroscopic control via a normal biopsy needle. Summarizing their experiences the indications for this new technique is discussed.

Posterior mediastinal cysts are rare lesions accounting for ~5%-10% of mediastinal cysts. Most are bronchogenic, enteric, or neurogenic in origin; however, Müllerian cysts have recently been recognized as a distinct entity thought to arise from displaced Müllerian duct tissue. Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome results from incomplete development of Müllerian ducts and is characterized by congenital absence of the uterus and upper vagina. A shared embryological origin suggests a possible association between MRKH syndrome and mediastinal Müllerian cysts. We report the first known ca…

OBJECTIVES: To present a case of benign mediastinal thymic cyst, and to review the published information on these cysts, including their incidence, presentation, diagnosis and management.
METHODS: We report the case of a 55-year-old man who presented with a unilateral vocal fold palsy subsequently found to be due to the presence of a benign mediastinal thymic cyst. A literature search was undertaken to identify the incidence, key features and management of this rare condition.
RESULTS: Benign mediastinal thymic cysts are a rare cause of mediastinal masses. Usually diagnosed incidentally, the

BACKGROUND: Foregut cysts account for >50% of cystic lesions in the mediastinum, of which bronchogenic cysts are most common. Surgical resection is the most definitive approach for its diagnosis and treatment. A recent systematic review, however, suggests that endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) has a role in the management of bronchogenic cyst. We report our experience with EBUS-TBNA in the diagnosis and management of bronchogenic cysts.
METHODS: Medical records of patients with evidence of mediastinal cysts who underwent EBUS-TBNA between 2008 and 20…

Primary posterior mediastinal cyst is an exceptionally uncommon manifestation of hydatid disease especially in pediatric age group. We herein present the account of a giant posterior mediastinal hydatid cyst in an 8-year-old boy that was peculiar due to the absence of typical clinical and radiological features of hydatid disease. The diagnosis was established perioperatively by a combination of surgical and pathological findings. The report depicts one of the myriad presentations of hydatid disease and also emphasizes the verity that it should be considered in the differential diagnoses of any…
