New onset delirium prediction using machine learning and long short-term memory (LSTM) in electronic health record.

OBJECTIVE: To develop and test an accurate deep learning model for predicting new onset delirium in hospitalized adult patients. METHODS: Using electronic health record (EHR) data extracted from a large academic medical center, we developed a model combining long short-term memory (LSTM) and machine learning to predict new onset delirium and compared its performance with machine-learning-only models (logistic regression, random forest, support vector machine, neural network, and LightGBM). The labels of models were confusion assessment method (CAM) assessments. We evaluated models on a hold-o

Long-term Memory Response After a Single Intramuscular Rabies Booster Vaccination 10-24 Years After Primary Immunization.

BACKGROUND: Published data regarding long-lasting immunological rabies memory after pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) are scarce. We tested the hypothesis that rabies booster immunization elicits rapid anamnestic responses. METHODS: For this observational study, we included participants who had received PrEP 10-24 years before inclusion. We measured rabies antibody titers before, and on days 3, 7, and 14 after a single intramuscular booster. RESULTS: All 28 participants responded adequately regardless of route of administration or 2-dose vs 3-dose PrEP regimen. CONCLUSION: Rabies immunologica

Long-term antibody response and protective effect induced by attenuated scorpion toxins: Involvement of memory plasma cells.

In Algeria, Androctonus australis hector scorpion envenomation remains a major problem of public health because of non-efficient therapy. The development of safe vaccine against scorpion venom could be one key strategy for the envenomation prevention. The irradiation of venom by γ-rays develops suitable immunogens which produced effective antivenom and safe vaccine. In this study, we investigated the ability of the irradiated toxic fraction (γ-FtoxG50) to induce long-term memory humoral response in immunized animals (mice and rabbits), by involving the long-lived plasma cells to prevent effici

Trusting your heart: Long-term memory for bad and good people is influenced by resting vagal tone.

Several studies have highlighted the role of heart rate variability (HRV) in social engagement and social cognition. However, whether HRV is involved in the ability to remember faces associated with affectively salient behavioural information remains unexplored. The present study aims to close this gap by investigating long-term face-memory accuracy in individuals differing in resting vagally-mediated HRV. Individuals with high or low resting HRV viewed faces associated with episodic information differing in affective valence (positive, neutral, negative) or without any behavioural description

A reduction in long-term spatial memory persists after discontinuation of peripubertal GnRH agonist treatment in sheep.

Chronic gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRHa) administration is used where suppression of hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis activity is beneficial, such as steroid-dependent cancers, early onset gender dysphoria, central precocious puberty and as a reversible contraceptive in veterinary medicine. GnRH receptors, however, are expressed outside the reproductive axis, e.g. brain areas such as the hippocampus which is crucial for learning and memory processes. Previous work, using an ovine model, has demonstrated that long-term spatial memory is reduced in adult rams (45 weeks of age),

Passive exposure to speech sounds induces long-term memory representations in the auditory cortex of adult rats.

Experience-induced changes in the functioning of the auditory cortex are prominent in early life, especially during a critical period. Although auditory perceptual learning takes place automatically during this critical period, it is thought to require active training in later life. Previous studies demonstrated rapid changes in single-cell responses of anesthetized adult animals while exposed to sounds presented in a statistical learning paradigm. However, whether passive exposure to sounds can form long-term memory representations remains to be demonstrated. To investigate this issue, we fir

Maternal separation impairs long term-potentiation in CA1-CA3 synapses and hippocampal-dependent memory in old rats.

Exposure to chronic stress during the neonatal period is known to induce permanent long-term changes in the central nervous system and hipothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis reactivity that are associated with increased levels of depression, anxiety, and cognitive impairments. In rodents, a validated model of early life stress is the maternal separation (MS) paradigm, which has been shown to have long-term consequences for the pups that span to adulthood. We hypothesized that the early life stress-associated effects could be exacerbated with aging, because it is often accompanied by cognitive dec

Long-term T cell memory to human leucocyte antigen-A2 supertype epitopes in humans vaccinated against smallpox.

Identification of human leucocyte antigen (HLA) class I-restricted T cell epitopes is important to develop methods to track the evolution of T cell memory to new generation smallpox vaccines and allow comparison to older vaccinia virus preparations known to induce protection against smallpox. We evaluated the relative predictive values of four computational algorithms to identify candidate 9-mer HLA-A2 supertype epitopes that were confirmed to stimulate preferentially T cell interferon (IFN)-gamma responses by subjects last vaccinated with Dryvax 27-54 years previously. Six peptides encoded by

The striatal-enriched protein tyrosine phosphatase gates long-term potentiation and fear memory in the lateral amygdala.

BACKGROUND: Formation of long-term memories is critically dependent on extracellular-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling. Activation of the ERK pathway by the sequential recruitment of mitogen-activated protein kinases is well understood. In contrast, the proteins that inactivate this pathway are not as well characterized. METHODS: Here we tested the hypothesis that the brain-specific striatal-enriched protein tyrosine phosphatase (STEP) plays a key role in neuroplasticity and fear memory formation by its ability to regulate ERK1/2 activation. RESULTS: STEP co-localizes with the ERKs within neu

Verbal and visual memory improve after choline supplementation in long-term total parenteral nutrition: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Previous investigations have demonstrated that choline deficiency, manifested in low plasma-free choline concentration and hepatic injury, may develop in patients who require long-term total parenteral nutrition (TPN). Preliminary studies have suggested lecithin or choline supplementation might lead to improved visual memory in the elderly and reverse abnormal neuropsychological development in children. We sought to determine if choline-supplemented TPN would lead to improvement in neuropsychological test scores in a group of adult, choline-deficient outpatients receiving TPN. MET

Neonatal hippocampal damage in rats: long-term spatial memory deficits and associations with magnitude of hippocampal damage.

This study investigated the effects of neonatal hippocampal ablation on the development of spatial learning and memory abilities in rats. Newborn rats sustained bilateral electrolytic lesions of the hippocampus or were sham-operated on postnatal day 1 (PN1). At PN20-25, PN50-55, or PN90-95, separate groups of rats were tested in a Morris water maze on a visible "cue" condition (visible platform in a fixed location of the maze), a spatial "place" condition (submerged platform in a fixed location), or a no-contingency "random" condition (submerged platform in a random location). Rats were tested

Revitalizing Lost Memories: Long-Term Swift Learning and Improvement Post Electroconvulsive Therapy: A Case Report.

Although there is robust evidence of electroconvulsive therapy's (ECT's) efficacy in severe mental illnesses, its use is still constrained by patients' and clinicians' concern about the possibility of cognitive side effects. It is established that anterograde amnesia usually recovers within weeks of the acute ECT treatment course, whereas retrograde memory loss can persist in the long term in some patients. To date, it remains unknown whether retrograde memory loss after ECT can recover and, if so, how. This case report describes a patient who received an acute course of bifrontal 0.5 milliseco

Anosmia in COVID-19 could be associated with long-term deficits in the consolidation of procedural and verbal declarative memories.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Long-COVID describes the long-term effects of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). In long-COVID patients, neuropsychological alterations are frequently reported symptoms. Research points to medial temporal lobe dysfunction and its association with anosmia in long-COVID patients. This study aims to investigate the acquisition and consolidation of declarative and procedural memory in long-COVID patients and to explore whether anosmia is related to these dissociated memory functions. METHODS: Forty-two long-COVID participants and 30 controls (C) were recruited. The s

High confidence spatial long-term memories produce greater cortical activity in males than females.

Many functional resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have reported sex differences during long-term memory. The present fMRI investigation aimed to identify whether sex differences exist during high- versus low-confidence accurate spatial memories. During the study phase, abstract shapes were presented to the left or right of fixation. During the test phase, each shape was presented at fixation and participants made an old-"left" or old-"right" judgment followed by an "unsure" or "sure" response. The conjunction of female high- versus low-confidence spatial memory and male high- versus low-confide

Blocking Synaptic Removal of GluA2-Containing AMPA Receptors Prevents the Natural Forgetting of Long-Term Memories.

UNLABELLED: The neurobiological processes underpinning the natural forgetting of long-term memories are poorly understood. Based on the critical role of GluA2-containing AMPA receptors (GluA2/AMPARs) in long-term memory persistence, we tested in rats whether their synaptic removal underpins time-dependent memory loss. We found that blocking GluA2/AMPAR removal with the interference peptides GluA23Y or G2CT in the dorsal hippocampus during a memory retention interval prevented the normal forgetting of established, long-term object location memories, but did not affect their acquisition. The sam

Long-term memory for aversive training is impaired in Idua(-/-) mice, a genetic model of mucopolysaccharidosis type I.

Mucopolysaccharidosis type I (MPS I) is a lysosomal storage disease that leads to neurodegeneration and neurological deficits, among other pathological and clinical consequences. The aim of the present study was to evaluate neurobehavioral parameters in a genetic mouse model of mucopolysaccharidosis type I (MPS I). During exploration of an open field, adult MPS I (Idua(-/-)) mice showed normal locomotion and anxiety but reduced number of rearings. Idua(-/-) mice performed normally in a novel object recognition memory task and showed normal short-term retention of inhibitory avoidance training.

The effects of acute restraint stress and dexamethasone on retrieval of long-term memory in rats: an interaction with opiate system.

This study investigated whether application of acute restraint stress or dexamethasone, as a glucocorticoid receptor agonist, impaired retrieval of long-term memory and if pretreatment with opiate antagonist naloxone blocked their effects on memory retrieval. Young adult male rats were trained in one trial inhibitory avoidance task (1 mA, 1.5 s footshock). On retention test given 48 h after training, the latency to re-enter dark compartment of the apparatus was recorded. Thirty minutes before retention test, the rats were exposed to a 10 min of restraint stress in a Plexiglass tube or were inj
