Coaching is an increasingly popular means to provide individualized, learner-centered, developmental guidance to trainees in competency based medical education (CBME) curricula. Aligned with CBME's core components, coaching can assist in leveraging the full potential of this educational approach. With its focus on growth and improvement, coaching helps trainees develop clinical acumen and self-regulated learning skills. Developing a shared mental model for coaching in the medical education context is crucial to facilitate integration and subsequent evaluation of success. This paper describes t

BACKGROUND: According to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) symptoms of illness and capacity limitations must be kept apart and assessed separately. Psychological capacities are more important than physical capacities in today's world. Patients with neurological disorders not only show limitations in physical but also in psychological capacities. As in many cases there is comorbidity of neurological and mental disorders the question is to what degree this can increase psychological incapacity.
METHODS: Using a cross-sectional study design, neurologic

OBJECTIVES: Mental health research in sport is almost entirely focused on elite male athletes. However, recent research suggests that elite female athletes are at higher risk for mental ill-health when compared to their male counterparts. Given the recent growth of women's football in England and lack of research surrounding mental health in this population, this study sought to explore the prevalence of, and factors associated with depression, anxiety, and eating disorder symptoms in females competing in the top two tiers of English football.
METHODS: An anonymous online questionnaire pack,

Tobacco dependence is a major health problem for persons with a serious mental illness (SMI). Nurses working with psychiatric clients often lack the knowledge, ability, and confidence to offer their clients meaningful, effective help to quit smoking. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a tobacco education program on the perceived competence and motivation of baccalaureate nursing students (BSN) to intervene with SMI clients who use tobacco. The education program significantly improved the competence and motivation of BSN students to deliver cessation interventions to this

Mental health nursing requires specialised training in therapeutic communication and related soft skills. Innovative, digitally enhanced strategies may support competency development, particularly amid clinical placement shortages. This article outlines insights from a scoping review of technology use in undergraduate mental health nursing education. The objectives were to (a) explore the impact of using these technologies in students' experience and (b) develop insights that can contribute to the development of a curriculum that embed innovative educational technology with strong theoretical

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the level of sexual abuse knowledge and self-protection skills in a sample of female Chinese adolescents with mild mental retardation. It was hypothesized that the participants would exhibit impoverished knowledge on sexual abuse and related self-protection strategies.
METHOD: A total of 77 female Chinese adolescents aged from 11 to 15 years old who met the inclusion criterion of the study were recruited from four special schools for mental retardation. The Chinese versions of the Personal Safety Questionnaire and the "What If' Situation Test (Wurtele, 1

Diagnosis of mental health needs in people with mental retardation using the DSM-III-R manual was critically reviewed. Conceptual issues included the interaction of different diagnosis categories; the cognitive and linguistic competencies often required for diagnosis; the potential mismatch between psychopathology in people with mental retardation and the DSM-III-R nosology; and issues relating to multi-axial classification. Strategies identified to explore and resolve these issues include better documentation of the frequency and nature of these problems when using unmodified DSM-III-R criter

During the perinatal period, many parents experience mental health difficulties of varying severity, which have been associated with adverse outcomes. Examples include perinatal obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) which can be thought to exist on a continuum from subclinical symptoms (e.g., intrusive thoughts (ITs)) to clinical diagnosis of OCD. Similarly postpartum psychosis can range from subclinical 'psychotic like experiences' (PLEs) to clinical diagnosis. These disorders are distinct conditions, yet some argue an overlap or comorbidity in symptoms, including co-occurrence postnatally, and

This text examines how current scientific knowledge has the potential of fulfilling one of the major functions of the criminal justice system. Scientific knowledge should be used to ensure that the criminal justice system's functioning results in maximizing societal protection and crime reduction. Abnormal states of the mind contribute to criminal behaviour and are considered in exculpatory defences. The failure of the long standing insanity defence and its utility among cognitively impaired offenders, provided impetus to this work. In estimating the success rates (or lack thereof) of raised d

With the approaching publication of the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), alternative organizations of the DSM (4th ed.; DSM-IV; American Psychiatric Association, 1994) categories have been proposed. This article compares several published alternative organizations to clinicians' organization of the DSM-IV categories. As demonstrations of their organization of DSM-IV categories, psychologists and psychiatrists sorted 66 DSM-IV diagnostic categories into groups of similar diagnoses and then made progressively larger and smaller groups of diagnoses

Purpose: Among black transgender women (transwomen) at high risk of HIV acquisition or already living with HIV/AIDS, the study examined whether medical or socially based gender affirming factors may contribute differentially to selected measures of resiliency, perceived stress, and a scale measure of mental health outcomes. This question has implications for clinical care and counseling of this population. Methods: Seventy-seven black transwomen were recruited to participate in a private, face-to-face structured interview. Two index measures of gender affirmation (GA) were constructed from the

Guided by stress proliferation and adaptation perspectives, this study investigates competing hypotheses for the relationship between time served in prison and mental health symptoms. Drawing on data from the Survey of Inmates in State Correctional Facilities in 2004 (N = 12,118), our findings suggest that time served is correlated with mental health symptoms, but that the association differs across race and sex. White males exhibit fewer mental health symptoms at longer exposures to prison, while black males and black females exhibit more symptoms. We conclude that both incarceration dosage (

The Scandinavian countries share a social-democratic and humanistic view in that mentally disturbed offenders should not be punished or sentenced to prison if they are considered unaccountable for their actions. The countries differ, however, for example regarding referrals for medico-legal examinations. This article gives: 1) an overview of the Scandinavian forensic psychiatric practices regarding organization, legislation, resources and use of methods, and 2) a study of forensic psychiatric assessment as they are done in the Scandinavian countries. From each country 20 forensic psychiatric c

The quality of prenatal maternal mental health, from psychological stress and depressive symptoms to anxiety and other nonpsychotic mental disorders, profoundly affects fetal neurodevelopment. Despite the evidence for the influence of positive mental well-being on health, there is, to our knowledge, no research examining the possible effects of positive antenatal mental health on the development of the offspring. Using exploratory bifactor analysis, this prospective study (n = 1,066) demonstrated the feasibility of using common psychiatric screening tools to examine the effect of positive mate

BACKGROUND: Mental health interventions have increasingly shifted beyond symptom reduction toward strengthening psychological resources that support adaptive functioning and well-being. Emotional intelligence (EI), encompassing competencies related to emotional awareness, understanding, regulation, and interpersonal functioning, represents a potentially modifiable target for promoting mental health. However, existing evidence remains fragmented regarding the EI domains targeted, intervention characteristics, and effectiveness across symptom-based and positive psychological outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Parental mental illness is a major public health issue across the globe with well-known intergenerational impacts on children. There is a wide body of evidence supporting the effectiveness of a range of interventions supporting families, however, their implementation has rarely been sustained across public health systems. Systemic change is an important part of workforce development and known to be crucial to embed and sustain practice, policy and structural initiatives in services for families. While much is known about the barriers to implementing family focused approaches with

Mental health, encompassing self-esteem, confidence, physical activity, and social interaction, is essential for the well-being of children and adolescents and supports executive functions crucial for school performance. Mental ill health among young people is increasing in Sweden, with rising rates of self-reported problems, psychiatric diagnoses, and prescriptions of psychotropic medication. The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of equine-assisted interventions (EAI) among children and adolescents with anxiety-related mental ill health in southern Sweden. A qualitative design

BACKGROUND: Palliative care offers solace, mitigates pain, and enhances quality of life. However, individuals with mental diseases have inadequate access to palliative care and encounter various barriers during the process. As the need for palliative care is expected to rise significantly in the future, palliative care must be considered a global health priority for healthcare professionals to upgrade care quality. This study aims to synthesize qualitative evidence on healthcare professionals' experience of providing palliative care for patients with mental disorders, so as to identify relevan

There has been increased use of telemedicine in clinical practice, but telemedicine curricula are not standard in pediatric residency training. We developed a 2-case, Virtual Objective Structured Clinical Exam (VOSCE) for pediatric residents with telemedicine learning objectives. Resident competency was assessed using a behaviorally anchored checklist, and residents completed a pre/post self-assessment. Less than half of the residents met mastery for the following behaviors: confirmation of patient identifiers, optimization of technical aspects and partnering with the patient to perform a phys
