Estimation of the major source and sink of methylmercury in the Florida Everglades.

Mercury methylation and/or demethylation have been observed in several compartments [soil (saturated soils covered by standing water), floc, periphyton, and water] of the Everglades, a wetland with mercury as one of the major water quality concerns. However, it is still unclear which compartment is the major source or sink due to the lack of estimation and comparison of the net methylmercury (MeHg) production or degradation in these compartments. The lack of this information has limited our understanding of Hg cycling in this ecosystem. This study adopted a double stable isotope ((199)Hg(2+) a

Chemical modification of membranes. II. Permeation paths for sulfhydryl agents.

The amino-reactive reagent, 4-acetamido-4'-isothiocyanostilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid (SITS),(1) considerably reduces the uptake of the sulfhydryl agent, parachloromercuriphenylsulfonic acid (PCMBS), but does not reduce its effects on cation permeability and on cation transport. These data indicate that PCMBS enters the membrane by at least two channels, one sensitive and the other insensitive to SITS, with only the latter leading to the cation-controlling sulfhydryl groups. Substitution of phosphate or sulfate for chloride results in an inhibition of PCMBS uptake via the SITS-insensitive pathw

Importance of hypolimnetic cycling in aging of "new" mercury in a northern temperate lake.

The aging of "new" mercury (Hg) was investigated in Experimental Lake 658 as part of the Mercury Experiment To Assess Atmospheric Loading In Canada and the United States (METAALICUS). Mercury enriched in (202)Hg was added to the epilimnion over a three-year period to simulate direct atmospheric deposition. We evaluated the aging of newly added mercury (HgLake) in the water column using chemical methods and experiments to examine differences in phase partitioning and transport compared to the ambient pool, HgAmb. Aging was sufficiently slow to observe differences in the partitioning characteris

Spatial patterns of mercury in macroinvertebrates and fishes from streams of two contrasting forested landscapes in the eastern United States.

Controls on mercury bioaccumulation in lotic ecosystems are not well understood. During 2007-2009, we studied mercury and stable isotope spatial patterns of macroinvertebrates and fishes from two medium-sized (<80 km(2)) forested basins in contrasting settings. Samples were collected seasonally from multiple sites across the Fishing Brook basin (FB(NY)), in New York's Adirondack Mountains, and the McTier Creek basin (MC(SC)), in South Carolina's Coastal Plain. Mean methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations within macroinvertebrate feeding groups, and mean total mercury (THg) concentrations within mo

Validation of methodology for determination of the mercury methylation potential in sediments using radiotracers.

Experiments to determine the mercury methylation potential were performed on sediments from two locations on the river Idrijca (Slovenia), differing in ambient mercury concentrations. The tracer used was the radioactive isotope (197)Hg. The benefit of using this tracer is its high specific activity, which enables spikes as low as 0.02 ng Hg(2+) g(-1) of sample to be used. It was therefore possible to compare the efficiency of the methylation potential experiments over a range of spike concentrations from picogram to microgram levels. The first part of the work aimed to validate the experimenta

Mercury speciation in Scottish raptors reveals high proportions of inorganic mercury in Scottish golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos): Potential occurrence of mercury selenide nanoparticles.

Knowledge of the uptake and fate of mercury (Hg) compounds in biota is important in understanding the global cycling of Hg and its transfer pathways through food chains. In this study, we analysed total mercury (T-Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in 117 livers of Scottish birds of prey that were found across Scotland and submitted for post-mortem examination through the Raptor Health Scotland project between 2009 and 2019. Statistical comparisons focussed on six species (barn owl, Tyto alba; Eurasian common buzzard, Buteo buteo; golden eagle, Aquila chrysaetos; hen harrier, Circus c

Repeated pulses of volcanism drove the end-Permian terrestrial crisis in northwest China.

The Permo-Triassic mass extinction was linked to catastrophic environmental changes and large igneous province (LIP) volcanism. In addition to the widespread marine losses, the Permo-Triassic event was the most severe terrestrial ecological crisis in Earth's history and the only known mass extinction among insects, but the cause of extinction on land remains unclear. In this study, high-resolution Hg concentration records and multiple-archive S-isotope analyses of sediments from the Junggar Basin (China) provide evidence of repeated pulses of volcanic-S (acid rain) and increased Hg loading cul

Uncovering geochemical fractionation of the newly deposited Hg in paddy soil using a stable isotope tracer.

The newly deposited mercury (Hg) is more readily methylated to methylmercury (MeHg) than native Hg in paddy soil. However, the biogeochemical processes of the newly deposited Hg in soil are still unknown. Here, a field experimental plot together with a stable Hg isotope tracing technique was used to demonstrate the geochemical fractionation (partitioning and redistribution) of the newly deposited Hg in paddy soils during the rice-growing period. We showed that the majority of Hg tracer (200Hg, 115.09 ± 0.36 μg kg-1) was partitioned as organic matter bound 200Hg (84.6-89.4%), followed by residu

Concentrations of nucleophilic sulfur species in small Indian mongoose (Herpestes auropunctatus) in Okinawa, Japan.

Reactive sulfur species (RSS), such as hydrogen per (poly)sulfide, cysteine per (poly)sulfide, glutathione per (poly)sulfide, and protein-bound per (poly)sulfides, can easily react with environmental electrophiles such as methylmercury (MeHg), because of their high nucleophilicity. These RSS are produced by enzymes such as cystathionine β-synthase (CBS) and cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE) and are found in mammalian organs. Organs of wildlife have not been analyzed for hydrogen sulfide, cysteine, glutathione, and RSS. In this study, low molecular weight nucleophilic sulfur substances, including RSS

Subcellular distribution of trace elements and liver histology of landlocked Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) sampled along a mercury contamination gradient.

We sampled landlocked Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) from four lakes (Small, 9-Mile, North, Amituk) in the Canadian High Arctic that span a gradient of mercury contamination. Metals (Hg, Se, Tl, and Fe) were measured in char tissues to determine their relationships with health indices (relative condition factor and hepatosomatic index), stable nitrogen isotope ratios, and liver histology. A subcellular partitioning procedure was employed to determine how metals were distributed between potentially sensitive and detoxified compartments of Arctic char livers from a low- and high-mercury lake (

Serum/plasma methylmercury determination by isotope dilution gas chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry.

A method for the determination of methylmercury in plasma and serum samples was developed. The method uses isotope dilution with (198)Hg-labeled methylmercury, extraction into dichloromethane, back-extraction into water, aqueous-phase ethylation, purge and trap collection, thermal desorption, separation by gas chromatography, and mercury isotope specific detection by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. By spiking 2 mL sample with 1.2 ng tracer, measurements in a concentration interval of (0.007-2.9) μg L(-1) could be performed with uncertainty amplification factors <2. A limit of qua

Immune impacts of fire smoke exposure.

Exposure to fire smoke has become a global health concern and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. There is a lack of understanding of the specific immune mechanisms involved in smoke exposure, with preventive and targeted interventions needed. After exposure to fire smoke, which includes PM2.5, toxic metals and perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, epidemiology-based studies have demonstrated increases in respiratory (for example, asthma exacerbation), cardiac (for example, myocardial infarction, arrhythmias), neurological (for example, stroke) and pregnancy-related

Simultaneous determination of monomethylmercury, monobutyltin, dibutyltin and tributyltin in environmental samples by multi-elemental-species-specific isotope dilution analysis using electron ionisation GC-MS.

In this work, the simultaneous determination of four organometallic species (monomethylmercury, monobutyltin, dibutyltin and tributyltin) in environmental samples by using a GC-MS system with electron ionisation has been established. The measurement of isotope ratios in each species was accomplished by selecting the most adequate molecular cluster, and simple mathematical equations were applied to correct the contributions of 13C from the organic groups attached to the tin and mercury atoms. The influence of different parameters such as dwell time on the precision and accuracy of the measured

Comparative study on Hg bioaccumulation and biotransformation in Mediterranean and Atlantic sponge species.

In this work we present an assessment of mercury (Hg) and methyl mercury (MeHg) bioaccumulation in different species of marine sponges collected off the Northwestern Mediterranean and Northeastern Atlantic coasts. Overall the results showed significant accumulation of Hg in sponges, with the Mediterranean sponge Chondrilla nucula exhibiting the highest total Hg content (up to 0.5 mg kg-1) and bio-concentration factor (BCF) up to 23. A significant inter-species variability of Hg bioaccumulation was observed among species collected at the same site. The sponges, collected in marine environment c

Assessment of trace elements, POPs, (210)Po and stable isotopes ((15)N and (13)C) in a rare filter-feeding shark: The megamouth.

With less than 60 records being reported worldwide, the megamouth (Megachasma pelagios) is today one of the least known shark species inhabiting our oceans. Therefore, information concerning the biology and ecology of this enigmatic organism is very scarce and limited to feeding behaviour and preferred habitat. The present work reports new data on the concentrations of trace elements, organic mercury, POPs and (210)Po in hepatic and muscular tissues of a specimen found stranded in the southeastern coast of Brazil. Additionally, we provide new evidence based on stable isotope analysis (δ(15)N a

Mercury bioaccumulation and trophic transfer in sympatric snapper species from the Gulf of Mexico.

Consumption of marine fish is a major route of toxic methyl mercury (MeHg) exposure to ocean apex predators and human populations. Here we explore the influence of trophic structure on total mercury (Hg) accumulation in red snapper (RS, Lutjanus campechanus) and gray snapper (GS, Lutjanus griseus) from the coastal Louisiana region of the Gulf of Mexico, west of the Mississippi River. The objectives of this investigation were to: (1) determine the effectiveness of the use of offshore recreational fishing charter boats and marinas as sources of fish samples and (2) compare species differences in

Deposition and cycling of sulfur controls mercury accumulation in Isle Royale fish.

Mercury contamination of fish is a global problem. Consumption of contaminated fish is the primary route of methylmercury exposure in humans and is detrimental to health. Newly mandated reductions in anthropogenic mercury emissions aim to reduce atmospheric mercury deposition and thus mercury concentrations in fish. However, factors other than mercury deposition are important for mercury bioaccumulation in fish. In the lakes of Isle Royale, U.S.A., reduced rates of sulfate deposition since the Clean Air Act of 1970 have caused mercury concentrations in fish to decline to levels that are safe f

Methylmercury produced in upper oceans accumulates in deep Mariana Trench fauna.

Monomethylmercury (MMHg) is a potent toxin that bioaccumulates and magnifies in marine food webs. Recent studies show abundant methylated Hg in deep oceans (>1000 m), yet its origin remains uncertain. Here we measured Hg isotope compositions in fauna and surface sediments from the Mariana Trench. The trench fauna at 7000-11000 m depth all have substantially positive mass-independent fractionation of odd Hg isotopes (odd-MIF), which can be generated only in the photic zone via MMHg photo-degradation. Given the identical odd-MIF in trench fauna and North Pacific upper ocean (<1000 m) biota MMHg,

Teeth as bioarchives of metallic trace elements: a systematic review.

Teeth serve as durable, incremental biological repositories that archive environmental and physiological exposures during development. This systematic review evaluates the capacity of dental matrices to function as chronological bioarchives of metallic trace elements and minerals. A systematic search of Scopus, PubMed, and Google Scholar was conducted to identify original research quantifying trace elements in teeth using advanced analytical techniques. Nineteen eligible studies were identified. The reviewed literature suggests that heavy metals, such as lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic, ar
