BACKGROUND: Metalworkers are said to have heavy exposure to metals, but the amount of released metal ions from alloys and deposition on the hands is unknown.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze nickel, cobalt, and chromium in vitro release to the artificial sweat from nails and wire made of different alloys, and to test metal deposition on the fingers of metalworkers.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Six different samples of nails and wire were kept in artificial sweat for 24 hours and one week, respectively. The metal release was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). Eighty-eight consecutive metal pla

Outlet ferrous ion concentration is an essential indicator to manipulate the goethite process in the zinc hydrometallurgy plant. However, it cannot be measured on-line, which leads to the delay of this feedback information. In this study, a self-adjusting structure radial basis function neural network (SAS-RBFNN) is developed to predict the outlet ferrous ion concentration on-line. First, a supervised cluster algorithm is proposed to initialize the RBFNN. Then, the network structure is adjusted by the developed self-adjusting structure mechanism. This mechanism can merge or divide the hidden n…

Nowadays, despite improvements in safety rules and inspections in the metal industry, foundry workers are not free from burn accidents. Injuries caused by molten metals include burns secondary to molten iron, aluminium, zinc, copper, brass, bronze, manganese, lead and steel. Molten aluminium is one of the most common causative agents of burns (60%); however, only a few publications exist concerning injuries from molten aluminium. The main mechanisms of lesion from molten aluminium include direct contact of the molten metal with the skin or through safety apparel, or when the metal splash burns

Soils in the vicinity of nonferrous metal smelters are often highly polluted by inorganic contaminants released from particulate emissions. We used a technique with double polyamide experimental bags (1-μm mesh) to study the in situ transformation of fly ash (FA) from a secondary Pb smelter in acidic soil profiles. Between 62 and 66% of the FA dissolved after one year's exposure in the soils, leading to complete dissolution of primary caracolite (Na(3)Pb(2)(SO(4))(3)Cl) and KPb(2)Cl(5), with formation of secondary anglesite (PbSO(4)), minor PbSO(3), and trace carbonates. Release of Pb was pH-d

Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) aims to assess all environmental impacts "from cradle to grave". Nevertheless, existing methods for Life-Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) generally do not consider impacts from chemical exposure at the workplace. This is a severe drawback, because neglecting occupational health effects may result in product or process optimizations at the expense of workers' health. We adapt an existing LCIA method to consider occupational health effects from the use of perchloroethylene (PCE) and trichloroethylene (TCE) in dry cleaning and metal degreasing. The results show that, in

This article is based upon my own experiences with metalworking fluids and the adverse health effects and medical conditions associated with exposure to metalworking fluids. I have researched and witnessed the benefits that can be achieved when metalworking fluids are properly maintained and managed. My experiences have provided insight into how a shop operates, including comprehension of the equipment used, processes, mist generating points, engineering controls currently being adopted, and procedures that are used to maintain metalworking fluids. I have been able to share my personal experie

Mercury contamination in the Gold-Cyanide Process (GCP) is a serious health and environmental problem. Following the heap leaching of gold and silver ores with NaCN solutions, portions of the mercury-cyano complexes often adhere to the activated carbon (AC) used to extract the gold. During the electrowinning and retorting steps, mercury can be (and often is) emitted to the air as a vapor. This poses a severe health hazard to plant workers and the local environment. Additional concerns relate to the safety of workers when handling the mercury-laden AC. Currently, mercury treatment from the heap

Singapore has a resident population of 3,000,000 and a workforce of 1,780,000. Most are employed in manufacturing, services and commerce (245,000). From 1996 to 1998, 3472 cases were notified to the Ministry of Manpower and confirmed as occupational diseases. Noise-induced hearing loss accounted for 82% of cases, while only 11% of cases were industrial dermatitis. Occupational allergic contact dermatitis was not common, comprising approximately one third of the 369 cases of industrial dermatitis that were notified. However, we believe that the majority of cases are not notified to the authorit

Control of occupational exposure to metalworking fluid mist generally involves enclosing the machining center and exhausting to an air cleaner that returns cleaned air to the workplace. To select an appropriate air cleaner, particle size and generation rate of the mists need to be known. Mist particle size and concentration were measured as a function of tool speed, fluid flow rate, and cutting rate at an enclosed machining center. A vertical machining center was totally enclosed and the air from this enclosure was exhausted into a duct where mist concentration and size distribution were measu

Two groups of schoolchildren between seven and 12 years old residing in the vicinity of a non-ferrous industrial plant and exposed to lead (Pb) at a concentration that could cause health problems, were monitored. Concentrations of Pb in blood (blood-Pb), which were determined at regular six monthly intervals, were related to the Pb concentrations in surface tooth enamel (enamel-Pb). Acid etch biopsy samples of surface enamel were taken at the end of the five year study period in the first group (A) and after two years in the second group (B). Salivary Pb (saliva-Pb) concentrations were determi

The work verifies data gathered by Occupational Hygiene departments of Sanitary-Epidemiological Stations about workers exposure to chromium compounds in the processing of chrome iron ore. Research showed that 7 plants were involved in the processing of chrome iron ore and that the number of workers directly employed in the process amounted to 215-230. About 150 workers were exposed to high concentrations of chromium compounds which exceeded hygienic standards. All of them were employed only in metallurgical plants. The remaining 80-100 workers subjected to the study exposed to relatively low c

Analytical epidemiology techniques were used to study the malignant neoplasms prevalence in the population of Magnitogorsk (400,000), and among the workers engaged in the Magnitogorsk metallurgical plant (64,000 workers). Revealed was that the malignant neoplasms related morbidity rate was 1.6 higher in men and 3.2 higher in women among the plant workers as compared with the city population in general. The cancer risk factors were predominantly occupational ones, e. i. the major industrial carcinogens--benzopyrene in tars and carbon-black; benzol, chromium and nickel in the dust; the carcinoge

A study of workers exposed to low levels of lead as impurities in aluminum (as low as 0.07%) shows a statistically significant difference in blood and urine lead levels as compared with a control group. In addition, alterations in precursors of heme were demonstrated as reflected in elevated levels of urinary delta-aminolevulinic acid and erythrocyte protoporphyrin IX. This study has implications for workers who are exposed to metals with low concentrations of lead (less than 1%) since this exposure tends to go unnoticed both by the workers, even when symptoms are present, and by physicians wh

Epidemiological and animals toxicological studies have indicated that reactions between SO2(g) and metal containing aerosols result in the formation of respiratory irritants. It had initially been suggested by EPA that sulfate per se was responsible for the observed health effects. That now appears unlikely. These studies point out the importance of understanding in detail the chemical species formed by such interactions. In the present paper procedures which have been used to study the formation of aerosol inorganic S(IV) species are described, together with the results obtained from studies
