Visible-light-induced C-S bond formation in the synthesis of 2,4-disubstituted thiazoles through cascade difunctionalization of acetophenone: a greener approach.

A groundbreaking approach has been developed for synthesizing 2,4-disubstituted thiazoles using an eco-friendly and metal-free approach. This novel method utilizes methyl aryl ketones, N-bromo-succinimide (NBS), and thioamides in water as a green reaction medium under visible light irradiation. Using NBS as a bromine source, the reaction takes place through an in situ α-bromination method. This approach does not require any catalyst, which makes it exceptionally beneficial for the environment. The advantages of this efficient approach are manifold and include the use of greener conditions, abs

Response Surface Methodology Approach to Evaluate the Effect of Transition Metals and Oxygen on Photo-Degradation of Methionine in a Model Wine System Containing Riboflavin.

A Box-Behnken experimental design was implemented in model wine (MW) to clarify the impact of copper, iron, and oxygen in the photo-degradation of riboflavin (RF) and methionine (Met) by means of response surface methodology (RSM). Analogous experiments were undertaken in MW containing caffeic acid or catechin. The results evidenced the impact of copper, iron, and oxygen in the photo-induced reaction between RF and Met. In particular, considering a number of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) that act as markers of light-struck taste (LST), both transition metals can favor VSC formation, which w

Mutagenic effects of some water-soluble metal compounds in a somatic eye-color test system in Drosophila melanogaster.

Nickel, cadmium, lead, arsenic, manganese and chromium salts as well as MeHgOH were screened for mutagenicity, using a sensitive somatic eye-color test system in Drosophila melanogaster. The test is based on the insertion of a mobile element which causes instability in the white locus that is somatically enhanced by mutagens. This white locus expression is combined with a mutation, zeste, in another gene, to produce a light yellow eye color. Larval feeding with mutagens causes somatic mutations in the eye imaginal disc cells that develop into easily detectable red spots in the yellow eyes of a

Standards for Quantitative Metalloproteomic Analysis Using Size Exclusion ICP-MS.

Metals are essential for protein function as cofactors to catalyze chemical reactions. Disruption of metal homeostasis is implicated in a number of diseases including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, but the exact role these metals play is yet to be fully elucidated. Identification of metalloproteins encounters many challenges and difficulties. Here we report an approach that allows metalloproteins in complex samples to be quantified. This is achieved using size exclusion chromatography coupled with inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry (SEC-ICP-MS). Using six known metalloprotein

Light-Enabled FeCl3-Catalyzed Deoxygenative Chlorination of Aryl Triflates under Mild Conditions.

Phenols are cheap, abundant bulk chemicals that serve as versatile starting materials for diverse organic transformations. Herein, we report a mild, visible-light-induced FeCl3-catalyzed protocol for converting aryl triflates to aryl chlorides using MgCl2 as an inexpensive and green chlorine source. The reaction proceeds without noble metals or additional photoredox catalysts, shows broad functional group tolerance, and delivers products in good to excellent yields. Notably, the method is air- and moisture-tolerant and readily scalable.

Iron(III) Complexes with Luminescence Lifetimes of up to 100 ns to Enhance Upconversion and Photocatalysis.

Iron is the most abundant transition metal element and would be the ideal replacement for noble metals in many applications that rely on luminescent and long-lived electronically excited states. We show that efficient reversible energy transfer between doublet excited states of iron complexes and triplet excited states on organic ligands improves energy storage by up to 350-fold. As a result, luminescence lifetimes of up to 100 ns are achieved, the upconversion from red to blue light becomes 68 times more efficient and the yield of benchmark photoredox reactions is significantly improved. Thes

Unraveling the Nanosecond Photoresponse of Layered HgPSe3.

Chalcogen phosphates of transition metals make up a well-known group of antiferromagnetic semiconductors with the general formula MPX3, where M represents a transition metal and X is a chalcogen, either sulfur or selenium. Most of these compounds adopt a similar structure; however, mercury phosphochalcogenides present an exception with their unique van der Waals layered structure. Transition metal chalcogenides are highly appealing materials for photodetectors due to their exceptional optoelectronic properties. Among them, HgPSe3, a layered van der Waals phosphoselenide, shows promise for phot

Dopaminergic- and Serotonergic-Dependent Behaviors Are Altered by Lanthanide Series Metals in Caenorhabditis elegans.

The lanthanide series elements are transition metals used as critical components of electronics, as well as rechargeable batteries, fertilizers, antimicrobials, contrast agents for medical imaging, and diesel fuel additives. With the surge in their utilization, lanthanide metals are being found more in our environment. However, little is known about the health effects associated with lanthanide exposure. Epidemiological studies as well as studies performed in rodents exposed to lanthanum (La) suggest neurological damage, learning and memory impairment, and disruption of neurotransmitter signal

Tailored 3D interface for efficiency improvement in encapsulation-free hybrid light-emitting diodes.

The modification of the planar organic/inorganic interface of the hybrid light-emitting diodes by the addition of a tailored nanoporous crystalline metal oxide increases up to 1 order of magnitude the efficiency of the resulting devices. In this Letter, we present the preparation and characterization of the novel controlled 3D interface and discuss how the interaction between the metal oxide and the polymer at the interface results in such an improvement.

Electrical Control of Excitons in Bare MoSe2 and MoSe2/NbSe2 Heterostructures.

Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are promising materials for next-generation optoelectronic devices owing to their strong excitonic responses and atomic thickness. Controlling their light emission electrically is a crucial step toward realizing practical nanoscale optoelectronic devices, such as light-emitting diodes and optical modulators. However, photoluminescence (PL) quenching in van der Waals TMDC/metal heterostructures, caused by ultrafast interlayer charge or energy transfer, impedes such electrical modulation. Here, we investigate monolayer MoSe2/bulk NbSe2 heterostr

Memory and mood-enhancing neuroprotective effects of visible light photoactivated gold nanoparticles and PEG3350 coating in a rat animal model.

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) emerge as promising neuromodulatory biomaterials due to their tunable optical properties, biocompatibility, and ability to cross the blood-brain barrier. Here, we investigated the behavioral and neuroprotective effects of citrate-stabilized AuNPs (~ 19 nm) coated with PEG3350 and irradiated under white (AuWL+PEG) or green light (AuGL+PEG), compared with non-irradiated PEGylated AuNPs (AuNP+PEG). Comprehensive physicochemical analyses demonstrated that green-light irradiation enhanced surface plasmon resonance (SPR) activity, improved PEG adsorption, and yielded super

Copper induction of carotenoid synthesis in the bacterium Myxococcus xanthus.

Copper induces a red pigmentation in cells of the bacterium Myxococcus xanthus when they are incubated in the dark, at suboptimal growth conditions. The colouration results from the accumulation of carotenoids, as demonstrated by chemical analysis, and by the lack of a copper effect on M. xanthus mutants affected in known structural genes for carotenoid synthesis. None of several other metals or oxidative agents can mimic the copper effect on carotenoid synthesis. Until now, blue light was the only environmental agent known to induce carotenogenesis in M. xanthus. As happens for the blue light

N-Heterocyclic Carbene-Triarylamine Hybrids as Redox-Tunable Organophotocatalysts for Radical Cross-Coupling Reactions.

Visible-light-induced photoredox catalysis has emerged as a powerful platform for organic radical transformations under mild conditions. In this field, the development of efficient photocatalysts plays a crucial role. Conventional ruthenium and iridium polypyridyl photocatalysts are limited by the expense of these precious metals. From a sustainable perspective, organic photocatalysts represent cost-effective and mild alternatives to photoredox catalysis; however, tuning their redox properties often requires complicated synthetic approach. Here we introduce N-heterocyclic carbene-triarylamine

Metal Ions Effectively Ablate the Action of Botulinum Neurotoxin A.

Botulinum neurotoxin serotype A (BoNT/A) causes a debilitating and potentially fatal illness known as botulism. The toxin is also a bioterrorism threat, yet no pharmacological antagonist to counteract its effects has reached clinical approval. Existing strategies to negate BoNT/A intoxication have looked to antibodies, peptides, or organic small molecules as potential therapeutics. In this work, a departure from the traditional drug discovery mindset was pursued, in which the enzyme's susceptibility to metal ions was exploited. A screen of a series of metal salts showed marked inhibitory activ

Promoting Photon-to-Chemical Conversion through a Dielectric Antenna-Hybrid Bilayered Reactor Configuration.

The application of scattered light via an antenna-reactor configuration is promising for converting thermocatalysts into photocatalysts. However, the efficiency of dielectric antennas in photon-to-chemical conversion remains suboptimal. Herein, we present an effective approach to promote light utilization efficiency by designing dielectric antenna-hybrid bilayered reactors. Experimental studies and finite-difference time-domain simulations demonstrate that the engineered SiO2-carbon/metal dielectric antenna-hybrid bilayered reactors exhibit a synergy of absorption superposition and electric fi

Interaction of ribonucleotides with metal hexacyanocobaltate(III): a possible role in chemical evolution.

It has been proposed that metal cyanide complexes would have acted as effective prebiotic catalysts. Insoluble metal cyanide complexes could have concentrated biomonomers from the dilute prebiotic soup, facilitating certain prebiotic reactions. In the light of the above hypothesis, interaction of four ribonucleotides, namely 5'-AMP, 5'-GMP, 5'-CMP, and 5'-UMP with copper(II)- and cadmium(II) hexacyanocobaltate(III) has been studied. The interaction was found to be maximum at neutral pH. 5'-GMP showed greater interaction with both the metal hexacyanocobaltate(III) while copper(II) hexacyanocoba

Thiazoline Carbene-Cu(I)-Amide complexes: Efficient White Electroluminescence from Combined Monomer and Excimer Emission.

Luminescent carbene-metal-amide complexes bearing group 11 metals (Cu, Ag, Au) have recently attracted great attention due to their exceptional emission efficiency and high radiative decay rates (kr). These materials provide a less costly alternative to organic light-emitting diode (OLED) emitters based on more scarce metals, such as Ir and Pt. Herein, a series of eight Cu(I) complexes bearing as yet unexplored 1,3-thiazoline carbenes have been investigated and analyzed with respect to their light emission properties and OLED application. For the first time among the class of copper-based orga

PEGylated Copper Nanowires as a Novel Photothermal Therapy Agent.

Metal nanowires are promising for their applications including electrical connectors, transparent conductive electrodes and conductive additives, but the use of metal nanowires as photothermal agents to convert light to heat has yet to be reported. Here we synthesized dispersible polyethylene glycol-coated (PEGylated) copper nanowires (CuNWs) and showed for the first time that PEGylated CuNWs were able to convert near-infrared (NIR, 808 nm) light into heat at a photothermal efficiency of 12.5%. The PEGylated CuNWs exhibited good reusability and enabled rapid temperature rise to >50 °C in 6 min
