Mortality rates and population density of tsetse flies correlated with satellite imagery.

Tsetse flies are a major constraint on animal production in about 10 million km2 of Africa through their transmission of animal trypanosomiasis. Up to 25 million people are at risk from human trypanosomiasis, or sleeping sickness. Tsetse research has been concentrated on the factors that control the distribution and abundance of these vectors and the means by which their numbers can be reduced. Eradication successes in some countries are insignificant compared with the continental scale of the problem and the long-term reduction in the area infested by tsetse has been negligible. We report her

[Effect of the irrigation and reclamation transformation of the Karshi Steppe on burrow sandflies of the genus Phlebotomus--vectors of the causative agent of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis].

Studies of land irrigation effect on Phlebotomus sandflies, carriers of Leishmania major (a zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis causative agent)--were performed for 15 field work periods, from 1967 to 1981, at 18 sites in various natural areas of the Karshi Steppe (Uzbek SSR). Over 43500 sandfly specimen were caught and identified. Regularities in sandfly number changes, first of all, that of Ph. papatasi, after irrigation were determined, with respect to various proximity of great gerbils' settlements, where sandflies breed in the irrigated fields. Well-drained sites situated higher than irrigat

The association between meteorological factors and influenza incidence in Taiwan: Regional heterogeneity and subtropical climate variability.

The relationship between meteorological factors and influenza seasonality is well-established in temperate regions but remains complex and less understood in subtropical climates. This study investigates the association between key weather variables and influenza-like illness (ILI) incidence in Taiwan using real observational data from 2020 to 2025. We conducted a retrospective ecological study using publicly available data from the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control and the Central Weather Administration. Based on 4,642 complete county-week observations across 17 counties/cities, we examined

Meteorological Effects on the Abundance of West Nile Virus Mosquito Vectors in Two Communities Located on the Texas-Mexico Border in the Northern Chihuahuan Desert.

Background: Mosquitoes in the genus Culex are vectors of multiple arboviruses, including West Nile virus, St. Louis Encephalitis virus, and Western equine encephalitis virus. In the United States, West Nile (WN) is the leading cause of mosquito-borne diseases, including the El Paso, Texas, and surrounding communities. While Cx. quinquefasciatus, Cx. tarsalis, and Cx. erythrothorax are well documented in the El Paso region, the meteorological effects on the overall abundance and virus transmission risk are not well understood. Our study objective was to estimate temporal population abundance in

Association between meteorological factors and the prevalence dynamics of Japanese encephalitis.

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is an acute infectious disease caused by the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) and is transmitted by mosquitoes. Meteorological conditions are known to play a pivotal role in the spread of JEV. In this study, a zero-inflated generalised additive model and a long short-term memory model were used to assess the relationship between the meteorological factors and population density of Culex tritaeniorhynchus as well as the incidence of JE and to predict the prevalence dynamics of JE, respectively. The incidence of JE in the previous month, the mean air temperature and t

Nonlinear and Threshold Effect of Meteorological Factors on Japanese Encephalitis Transmission in Southwestern China.

Although previous studies have reported that meteorological factors might affect the risk of Japanese encephalitis (JE), the relationship between meteorological factors and JE remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between meteorological factors and JE and identify the threshold temperature. Daily meteorological data and JE surveillance data in Dazhou, Sichuan, were collected for the study period from 2005 to 2012 (restricting to May-October because of the seasonal distribution of JE). A distributed lag nonlinear model was used to analyze the lagged and cumulative effec

Association between meteorological factors and blood pressure variability in northern Guizhou, China.

Hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular mortality worldwide, and its pathogenesis is closely related to environmental exposures. However, most previous studies have focused on the effects of air pollution on resting blood pressure. This study investigated the associations between short-term exposure to meteorological factors and blood pressure variability (BPV). Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring data were obtained from 4,355 patients, and indices of systolic and diastolic BPV were calculated. Daily meteorological variables included relative humidity, shortwave radiation, and

Epidemic Characteristics and Meteorological Risk Factors of Hemorrhagic Fever With Renal Syndrome in 151 Cities in China From 2015 to 2021: Retrospective Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) continues to pose a significant public health threat to the population in China. Previous epidemiological evidence indicates that HFRS is climate sensitive and influenced by meteorological factors. However, past studies either focused on too-narrow geographical regions or investigated time periods that were too early. There is an urgent need for a comprehensive analysis to interpret the epidemiological patterns of meteorological factors affecting the incidence of HFRS across diverse climate zones. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to d

Integrated Forecasts Based on Public Health Surveillance and Meteorological Data Predict West Nile Virus in a High-Risk Region of North America.

BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNV), a global arbovirus, is the most prevalent mosquito-transmitted infection in the United States. Forecasts of WNV risk during the upcoming transmission season could provide the basis for targeted mosquito control and disease prevention efforts. We developed the Arbovirus Mapping and Prediction (ArboMAP) WNV forecasting system and used it in South Dakota from 2016 to 2019. This study reports a post hoc forecast validation and model comparison. OBJECTIVES: Our objective was to validate historical predictions of WNV cases with independent data that were not used

Understanding the role of temporal variation of environmental variables in predicting Aedes aegypti oviposition activity in a temperate region of Argentina.

Environmental variables related to vegetation and weather are some of the most influential factors that impacting Aedes (Stegomya) aegypti, a mosquito vector of dengue, chikungunya and Zika viruses. In this paper, we aim to develop temporal predictive models for Ae. aegypti oviposition activity utilizing vegetation and meteorological variables as predictors in Córdoba city (Argentina). Eggs were collected using ovitraps placed throughout the city from 2009 to 2012 that were replaced weekly. Temporal generalized linear mixed models were developed with negative binomial distributions of errors t
