Does colonization with methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus protect against nosocomial acquisition of methicillin-resistant S. aureus?

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) carriage may protect against nosocomial methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) acquisition by competing for colonization of the anterior nares. DESIGN: Prospective cohort and nested case-control study. SETTING: Swiss university hospital. PATIENTS: All adult patients admitted to 14 wards of the general medicine division between April 1 and October 31, 2007. METHODS: Patients were screened for MRSA and MSSA carriage at admission to and discharge from the division. Associations between nosocomial MRSA

Clindamycin treatment of invasive infections caused by community-acquired, methicillin-resistant and methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus in children.

BACKGROUND: Community-acquired, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) is an established pathogen in several areas of the United States, but experience with clindamycin for the treatment of invasive MRSA infections is limited. We compared the outcome of therapy for MRSA with that of methicillin-susceptible (MSSA) invasive infections in children treated with clindamycin, vancomycin or beta-lactam antibiotics. METHODS: The demographics, hospital course and outcome of children at Texas Children's Hospital between February and November 2000 and between August 2001 and August 2002 w

Severe Staphylococcus aureus infections caused by clonally related community-acquired methicillin-susceptible and methicillin-resistant isolates.

We investigated the genetic relatedness of 5 community-acquired (CA) Staphylococcus aureus isolates obtained from 4 consecutive pediatric patients presenting with sepsis syndrome and severe pneumonia during a 3-week period in 2000. Two patients were infected with methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA), and 2 were infected with methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). The pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns for the 2 CA-MRSA isolates were identical to each other, as were the patterns for the 3 CA-MSSA isolates. A 2-band difference reflecting the presence of a staphylococcal cassette chro

Decreased affinity of PBP3 to methicillin in a clinical isolate of Staphylococcus epidermidis with borderline resistance to methicillin and free of the mecA gene.

Analysis of the antibiotic binding capacity of penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) in a group of clinical isolates of Staphylococcus epidermidis suggests that the increased level of resistance to methicillin (MIC 4.0 microg/ml) in an isolate free of the mecA gene is due to the decreased binding capacity of PBP3.

Comparison of the effects in vitro of tea tree oil and plaunotol on methicillin-susceptible and methicillin-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus.

The effects in vitro of tea tree oil (TTO) and plaunotol were examined by monitoring the growth of a standard strain of Staphylococcus aureus FDA 209P and of fourteen methicillin-susceptible strains of S. aureus (MSSA), together with twenty methicillin-resistant strains (MRSA). The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) and the doses for 50% inhibition of growth (ID50) were determined by the micro-broth dilution (MD) method, and the broth dilution with shaking (BDS) method, respectively. The MIC of plaunotol for 50 and 90% of the MSSA and MRSA were assessed by the MD method, as 16 microg/ml a

National Costs Associated With Methicillin-Susceptible and Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Hospitalizations in the United States, 2010-2014.

BACKGROUND: Infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) have been associated with worse patient outcomes and higher costs of care than methicillin-susceptible (MSSA) infections. However, since prior studies found these differences, the healthcare landscape has changed, including widespread dissemination of community-associated strains of MRSA. We sought to provide updated estimates of the excess costs of MRSA infections. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis using data from the National Inpatient Sample from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality f

Prevalence of nasal colonisation by methicillin-sensitive and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus among healthcare workers and students in Madagascar.

BACKGROUND: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) clones pose a significant threat to hospitalised patients because the bacteria can be transmitted by asymptomatic carriers within healthcare facilities. To date, nothing is known about the prevalence of S. aureus and MRSA among healthcare workers in Madagascar. The objective of our study was to examine the prevalence and clonal epidemiology of nasal S. aureus and MRSA among healthcare workers and non-medical University students in Antananarivo, Madagascar. METHODS: This cross sectional study screened nasal swabs taken from student

Eugenol: a phyto-compound effective against methicillin-resistant and methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus clinical strain biofilms.

BACKGROUND: Inhibition and eradication of Staphylococcus aureus biofilms with conventional antibiotic is difficult, and the treatment is further complicated by the rise of antibiotic resistance among staphylococci. Consequently, there is a need for novel antimicrobials that can treat biofilm-related infections and decrease antibiotics burden. Natural compounds such as eugenol with anti-microbial properties are attractive agents that could reduce the use of conventional antibiotics. In this study we evaluated the effect of eugenol on MRSA and MSSA biofilms in vitro and bacterial colonization in

Combinations of β-lactam or aminoglycoside antibiotics with plectasin are synergistic against methicillin-sensitive and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

Bacterial infections remain the leading killer worldwide which is worsened by the continuous emergence of antibiotic resistance. In particular, methicillin-sensitive (MSSA) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are prevalent and the latter can be difficult to treat. The traditional strategy of novel therapeutic drug development inevitably leads to emergence of resistant strains, rendering the new drugs ineffective. Therefore, rejuvenating the therapeutic potentials of existing antibiotics offers an attractive novel strategy. Plectasin, a defensin antimicrobial peptide, potenti

Outcome and attributable mortality in critically Ill patients with bacteremia involving methicillin-susceptible and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia carries high mortality rates. The clinical impact of methicillin resistance remains controversial: outcome comparisons between patients with bacteremia involving methicillin-susceptible (MSSA) and methicillin-resistant (MRSA) S aureus are difficult to perform because of important differences in severity of illness. METHODS: A retrospective cohort analysis and 2 independent case-control analyses were performed to determine and compare outcomes and attributable mortality rates of MSSA (n = 38) and MRSA bacteremia (n = 47) in critically ill patients. …

Characterization of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus Aureus in municipal wastewater in Finland.

Wastewater-based surveillance (WBS) of multidrug-resistant bacteria could complement clinical data, serving as a population-level early warning tool. This study evaluated WBS as a pandemic preparedness tool, by selectively isolating and culturing methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) with CHROMagar MRSA. Some 24-h composite wastewater samples (n = 80) were collected from ten treatment plants across Finland between February 2021 and January 2022. MRSA prevalence in wastewater samples was 27.5% (n = 22/80), showing seasonal and temporal variations. Phenotypic antimicrobial susceptib

Nodular lymphangitis related to methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus infection.

Nodular lymphangitis, also known as lymphocutaneous syndrome or sporotrichoid lymphangitis, presents with inflammatory nodules along the lymphatic vessels, typically involving the upper or lower extremities. Although the most common cause of nodular lymphangitis is infection due to Sporothrix schenckii, Nocardia brasiliensis, Mycobacterium marinum, or Leishmania braziliensis, it is important for clinicians to be aware of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus as a rare cause of nodular lymphangitis and perform gram stain, bacterial culture, and antibiotic sensitivity profiles when appropr

New Quinone Antibiotics against Methicillin-Resistant S. aureus.

There is an urgent need for the development of new antibiotics. Here, we describe the inhibitory activity of new quinone compounds against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC® 43300), methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (ATCC® 29213), and two clinical isolates from Chile (ISP-213 and ISP-214). We observed 99.9% reduction in viability within 2 h of exposure without the cultures exhibiting any post-antibiotic effect, which was twice the kinetics to that observed with vancomycin. These clinical isolates did not acquire resistance to these quinone derivatives during the course of our stu

Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus: A Very Rare Cause of Meningitis.

Community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) is mostly implicated in soft tissue and skin infections. Cases with meningitis caused by CA-MRSA are rare. High index of suspicion should be kept for physicians as bacterial meningitis is a medical emergency and if untreated, has a high mortality rate. Urgent steps need to be taken to determine the cause and implement therapy. Here, we reported a case of a 58-year-old female with MRSA bacteremia and meningitis as confirmed by positive blood cultures and cerebrospinal fluid analysis; successfully managed with vancomycin an
