The microbial mixed culture RM grows with dichloromethane (DCM) as the sole energy source generating acetate, methane, chloride and biomass as products. Chloromethane (CM) was not an intermediate during DCM utilization consistent with the observation that CM could not replace DCM as a growth substrate. Interestingly, cultures that received DCM and CM together degraded both compounds concomitantly. Transient hydrogen (H2 ) formation reaching a maximum concentration of 205 ± 13 ppmv was observed in cultures growing with DCM, and the addition of exogenous H2 at concentrations exceeding 3000 ppmv

Patterns of volatile ECD-active substances in marine air at the ultra trace level were investigated. The protocol used carbon based adsorbents, thermodesorption and thick film HRGC-ECD together with a second ECD in line with oxygen doped make-up gas. The latter ECD mode leads to an increased sensitivity for chloromethane. dichloromethane, and other important chlorinated substances with an otherwise low response at an ECD driven with oxygen-free nitrogen or argon/methane. The synthesis and characterization of twenty new pentamethylcyclopentadienyl-rhodium and iridium complexes containing N^N and N^O-chelating chloroquine analogue ligands are described. The in vitro antimalarial activity of the new ligands as well as the complexes was evaluated against the chloroquine sensitive (CQS) NF54 and the chloroquine resistant (CQR) Dd2 strains of Plasmodium falciparum. Tris(o-anisyl)phosphane was reacted with ruthenium(III) chloride forming a novel Ru(III) complex of formula [Ru(PAn(3))(P(An)(phenolate)(2))Cl] containing a tridentate dianionic P,O,O-ligand and a bidentate neutral P,O ligand. The tridentate ligand was formed by elimination of two methyl groups from the starting ligand in the reaction with the ruthenium salt. The molecular structure was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The compound shows a high cytotoxic activity in ovarian cancer cell lines comparable with cisplatin and overcoming cisplatin-resistance.

Nitric oxide (NO) inhibits transport in various nephron segments, and the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle (TALH) expresses NO synthase (NOS). However, the effects of NO on TALH transport have not been extensively studied. We hypothesized that endogenously produced NO directly decreases NaCl transport by the TALH. We first determined the effect of exogenously added NO on net chloride flux (JCl). Various elicitors at different concentrations (salicylic acid, methyl jasmonate, Yeast extract, copper sulphate and sodium chloride) were added in cell suspension culture of B. monnieri on day 5. The metabolism of methyl mercury (MeHg) has been studied in rabbits administered 203Hg-labeled methyl mercuric chloride, 0.125 mumol/kg body weight, twice a week for 9 weeks, by intravenous injection. Twelve weeks after cessation of treatment, about 54% of the administered dose had been excreted in faeces and 5% in urine. After one week, the highest concentration of 203Hg was found in fur (8.6 nmol Hg/g). Epidemiologic evidence on the relation between reactive chemicals and cancer is reviewed. Contact sensitivities of three well known metal allergens (nickel sulfate, potassium dichromate and cobalt chloride) were examined using the local lymph node assay in CBA/N mice, F344 rats and Hartley guinea pigs. A novel strategy for the synthesis of 2-aminophenols in the absence of metals and oxidants was described. The 2-aminophenols were efficiently obtained through a cascade [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement and in situ hydrolysis process by using readily available N-arylhydroxylamines and the in situ-generated methyl chlorosulfonate from commercially available sulfuryl chloride and methanol under mild conditions.
