Quantitative electron microscopy can provide objective measurements of nuclear atypia in lymphoid cells in skin biopsies during early stages of infiltration of the skin as part of inflammatory or neoplastic processes. Tear samples obtained from patients with suspected viral conjunctivitis were examined by virus culture and by the pseudoreplica method for electron microscopy (EM). Adenoviruses were isolated in 13 of the 34 cases (38%) clinically diagnosed as adenovirus conjunctivitis. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is a valuable technique for rapid detection of the presence of microorganisms, for determination of their three-dimensional morphology and topology and for identification of their anatomical sites. Dental amalgam specimens were polished and afterward etched by an acid iodine solution. The replicas were obtained by the vacuum coating technique. The phagocytosis of capsulated vegetative cells of Bacillus anthracis in the mouse spleen was studied by thin sectioning techniques of electron microscopy. Mice were injected with autoclaved suspensions of capsulated and noncapsulated vegetative cells via the tail vein. The animals were killed 5, 10, and 30 min and 4 hr postinjection, with the central portion of the spleen being removed and procssed for electron microscopy. Fixation was with 2% KMnO(4) for 2 hr.
