Lyophilized (freeze-dried) human milk for preterm infants: a scoping review.

Freeze-drying (FD), or lyophilization, is commonly used to preserve foods. FD offers potential to create a human milk-derived human milk fortifier, and an alternative to freeze-storing human milk. However, processing human milk is known to affect its components. This scoping review explores the effect of FD on the; macronutrient, micronutrient, vitamin, bioactive components, microbes and anti-microbial factors in human milk, and studies where lyophilized human milk has been given to newborn infants. 48 articles were identified after full text review. FD human milk reduces the fat globule size

Camel milk: Nutritional composition, therapeutic properties, and benefits for human health.

Camel's milk is a widely consumed staple meal, especially in areas with dry and somewhat dry climates. Camel milk is rich in valuable ingredients, including lactoferrin and zinc, lactoactive peptides, and mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids, which support optimal health. These compounds have the potential to effectively treat various prominent human illnesses, such as tuberculosis, asthma, gastrointestinal disorders, and jaundice. The composition of camel's milk is more varied than that of cow's milk. The composition of camel milk is primarily influenced by nutrition, breed, age, and lactati

Human Milk Adrenomedullin Is Unstable During Cold Storage at 4°C.

INTRODUCTION: Under some circumstances human milk (HM) extraction and refrigerated storage may be necessary. Depending on the length and on the type of cold storage, milk may lose some important properties, but current advices on safe HM storage are discordant. Moreover until now no data in literature were present on the effect of prolonged cold storage on biologically active components of the HM such as adrenomedullin (AM). This important peptide is involved in response to hypoxia and inflammation, associated with neovascularization, in several tissues. The aim is to evaluate: (a) the presenc

Individual characteristics associated with PBDE levels in U.S. human milk samples.

BACKGROUND: Reported polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) concentrations in human samples in the United States have been higher than in Europe and Asia. Little is known about factors that contribute to individual variability in body burden. OBJECTIVE: In this large study we measured PBDE concentrations in human milk from the United States during 2004-2006. We assessed characteristics associated with concentrations in milk and change in milk concentration between 3 and 12 months postpartum. METHODS: We analyzed 303 milk samples obtained 3 months postpartum for PBDEs. A second sample was analy

Serotype III Streptococcus agalactiae from bovine milk and human neonatal infections.

Streptococcus agalactiae (group B streptococcus [GBS]) causes invasive human infections and bovine mastitis. This study examined the genetic relationship between bovine and human serotype III GBS by using molecular techniques that classify human serotype III GBS into four distinct phylogenetic lineages. Bovine serotype III GBS were largely contained in two lineages, which are distinct from the two major lineages (restriction digest types III-2 and III-3) that infect human neonates. One of the bovine lineages closely resembles the human III-1 lineage, whose members occasionally cause human neon

Challenges of matching human milk fatty acid patterns technically and functionally.

A vegetable oil fat blend resulting in formula major fatty acid levels similar to human milk is appropriate for infant feedings even though the palmitic acid may have a somewhat different positional distribution. Growth, bone mineral content, and visual acuity (as measured by the Teller acuity card procedure) achieved in normal infants consuming such formulas are at least as good as those from human milk. The quantitatively minor LC-PUFA levels may also be important in infant development and useful once safety of their sources has been adequately demonstrated. Such formula fat blends mimicking

Transfer of trastuzumab and pertuzumab into human breast milk: a case report.

PURPOSE: Lactation could offer benefit to the mother and child. Information on the safety of lactation during anti-cancer treatment, however, is scarce. Therefore, clinical data about drug exposure through breast milk is needed. To contribute to this, we present a case of a 34-year old woman who was treated with intravenous trastuzumab 600 mg and pertuzumab 1200 mg in the first cycle. Over the first 17 days of treatment, she collected breast milk samples. METHODS: Trastuzumab and pertuzumab concentrations in breast milk were determined by validated ELISAs. Subsequently, infant exposure parame

Human milk oligosaccharides and polyphenols: Mechanisms, effects, and applications in allergies.

Human milk offers the best nutrition to the infant, which is crucial for the child's proper development and health status across the lifespan. Besides providing the substances optimally supplying the baby with energy and building materials, breast milk contains several immunometabolically active components. Those include molecules fully de novo synthesized by the mother, such as human milk oligosaccharides (HMO), and substances of nonhuman origin, transferred to the infant through mother's milk, such as dietary plant polyphenols. In this review, we outline the basic biology of HMO and polyphen

Analysis of NEC cases registered in the human milk bank database.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in extremely low birth weight infants (ELBWIs), despite widespread donor human milk (DHM) use. This study examined NEC cases among DHM recipients to explore potential contributing factors. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 1,425 infants registered in Japan's human milk bank database (2018-2023). NEC cases at Bell stage ≥ II were confirmed by attending physicians. Infants who received DHM only after NEC onset were excluded. Cases were categorized by onset timing and associated clinical factors. RES

Importance of Human Breast Milk in the Early Colonization of Streptococcus mutans.

Background and objectives: The development of the oral microbiome begins in the prenatal stage. Breast milk contains antimicrobial proteins, microorganisms, metabolites, enzymes, and immunoglobulins, among others; therefore, differences have been noted in the type of microorganisms that colonize the oral cavity of children who are breastfed compared to those who are formula-fed. Our objective was to establish the relationship between breastfeeding, formula feeding, or mixed feeding (breastfeeding and formula) with the presence of S. mutans in a population of children under 6 months of age. "OMICS" in Human Milk: Focus on Biological Effects on Bone Homeostasis.

Human milk (HM) is a complex biofluid rich in nutrients and bioactive compounds essential for infant health. Recent advances in omics technologies-such as proteomics, metabolomics, and transcriptomics-have shed light on the influence of HM on bone development and health. This review discusses the impact of various HM components, including proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and hormones, on bone metabolism and skeletal growth. Proteins like casein and whey promote calcium absorption and osteoblast differentiation, supporting bone mineralization. Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids like docosah

Toxic metals in human milk in relation to tobacco smoke exposure.

Several reports confirm the deleterious effects of tobacco smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke (SHS) resulting in changes in the composition of breast milk. The aim of our study was to compare the levels of selected essential, as well as, toxic metals found in colostrum (collected at day 1 ± 2 post-birth) and mature milk (1 month ± 7 days post-birth) of nonsmoking women (n = 52) compared to those found in women who smoke tobacco (n = 51) and women exposed to second-hand smoke during pregnancy and lactation (n = 47). Women's non-smoking or smoking status was determined by their responses

[Impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on a human milk bank].

Introduction: the pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 led to the declaration of the state of sanitary alarm between March and June 2020 in Spain. The activity of human milk banks was affected during that period, making it necessary to implement new measures in order to promote milk donation and diminish said impact. Method and objective: the aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of the state of alarm decreed from March 14 to June 22, 2020 on the breastmilk bank at Hospital Virgen de las Nieves, Granada, Spain, in comparison with the same period during the previous year. To that end, a retrospe

Macronutrient Composition of Donated Human Milk in a New Zealand Population.

BACKGROUND: A primary role of human donor milk banks is to provide pasteurized human milk for the sick and preterm infant populations and to support the mothers of these infants as they establish their own milk supply. The results of human milk pasteurization continue to be studied to provide information that enables optimal nutrition in this sick and preterm population. RESEARCH AIMS: The aims of our study were to determine macronutrient characteristics (fat, protein, carbohydrate) and energy content of human milk donated to the Christchurch Women's Hospital Human Milk Bank in New Zealand, a

Microbial Communities in Human Milk Relate to Measures of Maternal Weight.

The process of breastfeeding exposes infants to bioactive substances including a diversity of bacteria from breast milk as well as maternal skin. Knowledge of the character of and variation in these microbial communities, as well as the factors that influence them, is limited. We aimed to identify profiles of breastfeeding-associated microbial communities and their association with maternal and infant factors. Bilateral milk samples were collected from women in the New Hampshire Birth Cohort Study at approximately 6 weeks postpartum without sterilization of the skin in order to capture the inf

Carbohydrate supplementation of human milk to promote growth in preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: Preterm infants are born with low glycogen stores and require higher glucose intake to match fetal accretion rates. In spite of the myriad benefits of breast milk for preterm infants, it may not adequately meet the needs of these rapidly growing infants. Supplementing human milk with carbohydrates may help. However, there is a paucity of data on assessment of benefits or harms of carbohydrate supplementation of human milk to promote growth in preterm infants. This is a 2018 update of a Cochrane Review first published in 1999. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether human milk supplemente
