This study focused on validating the synergistic antiproliferative activity and mechanism of cisplatin/plumbagin (PLB) in leukemic cells versus normal macrophages. BACKGROUND: Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is one of the angiogenic mediators that can be secreted by leukemic cells and plays an important role in tumor invasion and metastasis. Another important agent contributing to the relapse of ALL is C-X-C chemokine receptor type-4 (CXCR-4), expression of this receptor in cancer cells has been related to metastasis. We have previously shown that the calcium-binding protein complex, calprotectin, purified from rat inflammatory peritoneal cells exerts marked cytotoxic activity against rat, mouse, and human tumor cells. While conducting projects on ticks from deer and on tick ecology in animal trails in an Atlantic rainforest reserve in Southeastern Brazil, researchers of our group were bitten by ticks several times.
