The role of copper in iron metabolism.

The various roles played by copper in iron metabolism are reviewed. Copper may interfere with iron absorption by binding to mucosal transferrin. Mobilization of iron from mucosal, reticuloendothelial, and hepatic parenchymal cells may be effected through the action of ceruloplasmin. Copper may also participate in heme synthesis through the action of cytochrome oxidase. Reutilization of iron by the spleen reticuloendothelial cells is subjected to inhibition by excess copper.

Transient aplastic crisis in hereditary spherocytosis.

In this study the case of a child affected with hereditary spherocytosis, who presented with a presumably viral infection induced transient aplastic crisis, is described. The bone marrow aspirate showed phagocytosis of erythrocytes and nucleated cells by reticular cells. The possible pathogenetic role of bone marrow phagocytosis in aplastic crises in patients with haemolytic anaemias is discussed.

The pathogenisis of leptospirosis II. Jaundice in experimental leptospirosis in guinea pigs.

Different mechanisms responsible for the appearance of jaundice in leptospirosis caused by Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae in guinea pigs were discussed. Hepatocellular damage was demonstrated with the presence to a lesser extent of intrahepatic biliary obstruction. A massive destruction of extravascular red blood cells liberated by the hemorrhagic diathesis, appeared to be the main cause in the genesis of jaundice. The latter was inhibited following the neutralization of the reticuloendothelial system of guinea pigs by an irradiation before the infection.

Systemic augmentation of the immune response in mice by feeding fermented milks with Lactobacillus casei and Lactobacillus acidophilus.

This study investigates the effect of feeding fermented milks with Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus acidophilus and a mixture of both micro-organisms on the specific and non-specific host defence mechanisms in Swiss mice. Animals fed with fermented milk for 8 days (100 micrograms/day) showed an increase in both phagocytic and lymphocytic activity. This activation of the immune system began on the 3rd day, reached a maximum on the 5th, and decreased slightly on the 8th day of feeding. In the 8-day treated mice, boosted with a single dose (100 micrograms) on the 11th day, the immune response i

Mechanisms of Listeria monocytogenes-mediated modulation of tumor growth.

Studies using Listeria monocytogenes as an antitumor agent were initiated to determine the requirements for Listeria-mediated tumor inhibition to occur. When Strain 13 guinea pigs were injected with an admixture of viable Listeria and a methylcholanthrene-induced fibrosarcoma in a ratio of 1 bacterium to 100 tumor cells, Listeria had a marked capacity to inhibit tumor growth. This confirms an earlier study in our laboratory (M. M. Dustoor, A. Fulton, W. Croft, and A. A. Blazkovec, Infect. Immun. 23:54-60, 1979). At no time did animals exhibit overt symptoms of disease as a result of Listeria i

NK cell activity and monocyte dysfunctions in a patient with common variable hypogammaglobulinemia.

A 57-year-old man with a history of recurrent infections from the age of 50 was hospitalized with a diagnosis of common variable hypogammaglobulinemia (CVH). Immunological studies revealed a severe reduction of circulating immunoglobulins of all classes. Immunophenotyping of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) with monoclonal antibodies, revealed normal values of total B and T cells with CD4/CD8 ratio sharply reduced (0.35) as compared to normal (1.6) because of an increase of CD8 and a decrease of CD4 cells. The surface expression of IL-2 receptor was normal. Natural cytotoxic and phago

Advances in Living Cell-Mediated Nanodrug Delivery Systems: Construction Strategies, Applications and Challenges.

Nanodrug delivery systems have shown great promise against tumors, inflammatory diseases and central nervous system disorders. However, several limitations still exist before further clinical application. The unsatisfactory circulation time in vivo, rapid clearance by the mononuclear phagocyte system, insufficient tissue penetration and low targeting efficiency all hinder the clinical translation of nanomedicines. Cells are the fundamental functional units of the body and their intrinsic biological properties make them promising drug delivery vehicles for targeted therapy. Conjugating cells wi…

The first probable case of platelet transfusion-transmitted visceral leishmaniasis.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL; kala-azar), a life-threatening infection of the mononuclear phagocytic system, is transmitted by the bite of infected sand flies. Though peripheral parasitaemia is documented for Leishmania spp. causing VL, reports of transfusion-transmitted infections are rare. A case of probable platelet transfusion-acquired VL is reported from India and issues related to transfusion safety in endemic areas are discussed.

[The role of capsule formation in Burkholderia mallei for its persistence in vivo].

When studied in vivo (in guinea pigs) with the use of electron microscopy, B. mallei (strains C-5, 10230) were found to form a capsule. In the subacute course of infection, the encapsulated forms of B. mallei parasitized mainly in the cells of the system of mononuclear phagocytes in the liver, the spleen and the lungs. The capsule formed by B. mallei was shown to be one of the factors facilitating its persistence in the body.
