Differentiating hemorrhagic shock and organophosphate poisoning through integrated skin microbiome-metabolome signatures.

Accurate determination of cause of death and estimation of postmortem interval (PMI) are critical yet challenging tasks in forensic science, particularly in cases with rapid demise and absence of obvious morphological abnormalities. We employed an integrative multi-omics approach to characterize postmortem microbial succession and metabolic alterations on facial skin in mouse models of hemorrhagic shock (HS) and organophosphorus poisoning (OP) across three decomposition stages: bloating (2 days), active decay (8 days), and advanced decay (16 days). Metagenomic profiling revealed significantly

Clonal Candida auris and ESKAPE pathogens on the skin of residents of nursing homes.

Antimicrobial resistance is a public health threat associated with increased morbidity, mortality and financial burden in nursing homes and other healthcare settings1. Residents of nursing homes are at increased risk of pathogen colonization and infection owing to antimicrobial-resistant bacteria and fungi. Nursing homes act as reservoirs, amplifiers and disseminators of antimicrobial resistance in healthcare networks and across geographical regions2. Here we investigate the genomic epidemiology of the emerging, multidrug-resistant human fungal pathogen Candida auris in a ventilator-capable nu

Incidence and Consequences of Near-Drowning-Related Pneumonia-A Descriptive Series from Martinique, French West Indies.

Drowning represents one major cause of accidental death. Near-drowning patients are exposed to aspiration that may result in pneumonia with life-threatening consequences. We designed this descriptive study to investigate the frequency, nature, and consequences of post-drowning pneumonia. One hundred and forty-four near-drowning patients (33 children and 111 adults) admitted during four years to the University Hospital of Martinique, French Indies, were included. Patients presented pre-hospital cardiac arrest (41%) and exhibited acute respiratory failure (54%), cardiovascular failure (27%), and

Development of molecular-based methods for determination of high histamine producing bacteria in fish.

Histamine (or scombroid) fish poisoning is a significant cause of food borne disease in the United States. In this study, we describe the development of a molecular-based technique which uses digoxigenin (DIG) labeled DNA probes for the detection of gram negative bacteria producing high amounts of histamine (>1000 ppm). A cocktail of PCR amplification fragments corresponding to a 709 bp fragment of the histidine decarboxylase (hdc) gene of four high producing bacteria (Morganella morganii, Enterobacter aerogenes, Raoultella planticola and Photobacterium damselae) was DIG-labeled and screened a

Evaluation of the in-vitro antibacterial activity of Sch 34343.

The in-vitro activity (as measured by geometric mean MICs, mg/l) of Sch 34343 against aerobic and anaerobic bacteria was compared with that of 14 other selected beta-lactam antibiotics including aztreonam, latamoxef (moxalactam), ceftazidime and imipenem. Sch 34343 had good activity (less than 2 mg/l) against most Gram-negative aerobic bacteria whether or not they contained high levels of plasmid-mediated or chromosomally-mediated beta-lactamases. It was slightly less potent against strains of Morganella and Serratia (less than 4 mg/l) and inactive against Pseudomonas (greater than 64 mg/l). A

Gut microbiota shifts in hepatitis B-related portal hypertension after transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt: Mechanistic and clinical implications.

In this article, we provide commentary on the recent article by Zhao et al. We focus on the shifts in the gut microbiota of patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV)-associated cirrhosis/portal hypertension (PH) following transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) and the implications for understanding the mechanisms, diagnosis, and treatment. By comparing the gut microbiota composition and dynamic changes before and after TIPS in patients with and without hepatic encephalopathy, the authors found an increase in non-probiotic bacteria in those who developed hepatic encephalopathy post-TI

Shotgun Metagenomic Investigation of the Microbiome in Diabetic Foot Infections Compared to Healthy Skin.

Diabetic foot infection (DFI) is a major complication of diabetes, causing significant morbidity and mortality. Host factors and microorganisms in DFI can disrupt healing processes, leading to chronic, non-healing wounds. The aim of this study was to characterise the microbiome of DFIs and contralateral healthy foot skin (CHFS). Thirty-two diabetic patients were enrolled in this study. Samples were obtained from DFIs and CHFS from the same patient. The microbiome was profiled using metagenomic shotgun sequencing. All the samples were polymicrobial, with a predominance of the obligate anaerobes

Characteristics of gut bacterial microbiota of black soldier fly (Diptera: Stratiomyidae) larvae effected by typical antibiotics.

As agents in an emerging technology, Hermetia illucens (Linnaeus, 1758) (Diptera: Stratiomyidae) larvae, black soldier fly, have shown exciting potential for degrading antibiotics in organic solid waste, a process for which gut microorganisms play an important role. This study investigated the characteristics of larval gut bacterial communities effected by typical antibiotics. Initially, antibiotics significantly reduced the diversity of gut bacterial species. After 8 days, diversity recovered to similar to that of the control group in the chlortetracycline, tylosin, and sulfamethoxazole group

Conjugative plasmidic AmpC detected in Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis and Klebsiella pneumoniae human clinical isolates from Portugal.

AmpC is a type of β-lactamase enzyme produced by bacteria; these enzymes are classified in Class C and Group 1, and these confer resistance to cephamycin. Enterobacterales producing AmpC are reported worldwide and have great clinical importance due to therapeutic restriction and epidemiological importance once the easy dissemination by plasmidic genes to other bacteria is a real threat. These genes are naturally found in some enterobacteria as Enterobacter cloacae, Morganella morganii, and Citrobacter freundii, but other species have demonstrated similar resistance phenotype of AmpC production
