Microsurgical treatment of frontal mucocele sequelae.

Skull base surgery has undergone a revolution in recent decades with the introduction and development of new surgical approaches correlated … vascularized areas. To reduce the incidence of complications in the treatment of frontal recurrent mucoceles, accurate planning of reconstruction is mandatory. We introduce 2 cases involving anterior cranial base repair after radical resection of chronically infected tissues in patients affected by frontal recurrent mucoceles. Reconstruction was accomplis …

[Fronto-ethmoidal mucocele: a case report].

Paranasal sinus mucoceles can present ophthalmic disturbances. Our aim is to discuss the treatment and the endoscopic sinus surgery indication in the fronto-ethmoidal sinus mucoceles. We describe here a case of fronto-ethmoidal sinus mucocele in a patient with an important fronto-ethmoidal tumefaction and an increased prominence of his left eyeball. An endoscopic approach was done after explain to the patient the eventual risks and complications of the procedure, especially to his left eye.

Sphenoethmoidal mucocele masquerading as trochlear palsy.

Acquired vertical strabismus is commonly caused by superior oblique muscle palsy, often resulting from blunt head trauma or vascular problems, and less often from brain tumors, meningitis, and aneurysms. To date, mucoceles in the ethmoid sinus have rarely been reported as a cause for superior oblique muscle palsy. We report a case of trochlear nerve palsy and subsequent optic neuropathy caused by a mucocele in the ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses.

[Giant retroperitoneal cystic mass: appendiceal mucocele].

Appendiceal mucocele is a term used to describe the dilatation of the vermiform appendix produced by an intraluminal accumulation of mucus. Four pathological processes have been described that may lead to an appendiceal mucocele: obturation of cecoappendiceal communication, mucosal hyperplasia, mucinous cystadenoma and mucinous cystoadenocarcinoma. The most frequent is mucinous cystadenoma, seen in 50% of appendiceal mucoceles. 6% of patients with appendiceal mucocele develop peritoneal pseudomixoma, possibly through dissemination of the epithelial cells into the abdominal cavity. Preoperative…

[Unusual retrovesical cystic lesion: appendiceal mucocele].

OBJECTIVE: Retrovesical cystic lesions are uncommon, although its incidence is growing due to the use of current diagnostic techniques. Its clinical features are unspecific and can mimic other conditions of the lower urinary tract making the differential diagnosis of this disease entity is difficult. A case of appendiceal mucocele, an unusual retrovesical lesion, is presented. METHODS/RESULTS: A 9 x 14 cm right retrovesical cystic lesion suggestive of a seminal vesicle cyst was detected in a 57-year-old patient with polyalkyuria. The patient was symptomatic, therefore surgical exploration was…

Submandibular gland mucocele: diagnosis and management.

Mucoceles originating from the submandibular gland are extremely rare. A review of the English literature resulted in identification of only 5 such cases. We have diagnosed and treated 2 submandibular mucoceles. Both lesions were removed in continuity with the submandibular and sublingual glands. No complications and no recurrences have occurred to date. The diagnosis of these lesions is complicated because of the lack of specific clinical diagnostic criteria and the similarity between submandibular mucoceles and plunging or cervical ranulas. Computerized tomography and specifically the presen…

Superficial mucocele: report of 4 cases.

Four cases of the lesion first described as superficial mucocele by Eveson in 1988 are reported. All of the lesions developed in adult women; two of the women had concurrent oral lichen planus. The mucoceles were found on the soft palate, the buccal mucosa, and the upper and lower labial mucosa. The etiologic factors and pathogenesis of this lesion are discussed.

Neurosurgical aspects of sphenoid sinus mucocele.

The aetiological spectrum of sphenoid sinus mucocele includes congenital anomaly, trauma, infection, allergy and surgery of the sphenoid sinus. Enlargement of the mucocele, even with a short history, can result in progressive expansion of the sinus and extension of the lesion into the pituitary fossa, the suprasellar region, nasopharynx, orbits, clivus or ethmoid air cells. It is a benign cystic lesion with an excellent prognosis when treated appropriately. Generally, these lesions are managed by an ear, nose and throat surgeon, but when there is extension into the sellar and parasellar (espec…

[Appendiceal mucocele. Apropos of 6 cases].

Appendicular mucocele is a rare lesion presenting a combination of several histological lesions. It generally ruptures into the peritoneum and rarely into the retroperitoneum. The objective of this study was to examine the various radiological appearances of appendicular mucocele and to report three cases of mucocele which ruptured into the retroperitoneum. This retrospective series of 6 cases of histologically confirmed appendicular mucocele was collected by the Central Radiology Department of Ibn Rochd University Hospital in Casablanca. The mean age of the patients was 61.6 years (33 years-7…

[Functional endoscopic surgery of sinusal mucocele].

The treatment of paranasal sinus mucoceles must assure complete removal and prevention of recurrence. In order to clarify the precise indications for endoscopic management, a retrospective study was undertaken on 16 patients with paranasal sinus mucoceles treated by this method. All of the patients underwent endoscopic exploration with or without an associated bicoronal approach. The follow-up period varied between 3 months and 46 months with a mean of 24. The results were considered satisfactory if the patient's symptoms disappeared and follow-up endoscopy revealed persistence of sinus permea…

Petrous apex mucocele: high resolution CT.

Mucocele of the petrous apex is very rare, only three cases having been reported. Since this area is inaccessible to direct examination, imaging, preferably high resolution computed tomography (HR CT) is essential. We report a case showing an eroding, non enhancing mass with sharp, lobulated contours, within the petrous apex. The presence of a large air cell on the opposite side suggested a mucocele.

Lectin binding activity in appendiceal mucocele.

In order to further clarify the histologic criteria and prognostic measurement of appendiceal adenoma and well differentiated adenocarcinoma, lectin binding activity in 31 cases of appendiceal mucocele (6 hyperplasias, 16 adenomas and 9 adenocarcinomas) was studied using an immunoperoxidase staining method. An additional 45 cases of colonic lesions (15 adenomas and 30 adenocarcinomas) were also examined as the corresponding controls. Arachis hypogaea agglutinin (PNA) bound selectively to the neoplastic cells of adenocarcinomas in the appendix and colon, but in contrast, Dolichos biflorus agglu…

Chiasmal syndrome in sphenoid sinus mucocele.

Two patients with sphenoethmoid mucoceles developed visual field defects consistent with optic chiasm dysfunction. The presence of chiasmal field defects associated with the clinical syndrome of compressive optic neuropathy should not rule out the diagnosis of sphenoethmoid mucocele since definitive treatment can be carried out via transnasal drainage.

'It's just a mucocele': a case report of a massive appendiceal mucocele presenting as a left upper quadrant mass.

Tumours of the appendix are very rare tumours that can and often present with a mucocele. This is a case report highlighting the associated pathology of appendix tumours and the management of a large mucocele. Specifically, how a right hemicolectomy is very rarely needed in these cases regardless of size and local anatomical relationships and some important considerations for the practicing surgeon in the non-tertiary centre that encounters a case like this.
