Extra-articular diffuse-type tenosynovial giant cell tumor with benign histological features resulting in fatal pulmonary metastases.

Diffuse-type tenosynovial giant cell tumor (TS-GCT) is categorized as a locally aggressive but non-metastasizing neoplasm according to the WHO classification. Herein, we report an extremely rare case of a 41-year-old woman who developed multiple metastases from diffuse TS-GCT with benign histological features. The patient complained of a painful buttock mass and imaging studies revealed a soft tissue tumor of the buttock and multiple pulmonary nodules. The buttock tumor was excised and the final diagnosis was extra-articular diffuse-type TS-GCT. By video-assisted thoracic surgery, pulmonary no

Clinics in diagnostic imaging (64). Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis.

A 30-year-old woman undergoing chemotherapy for acute myeloid leukemia developed fever. Chest radiograph showed ill-defined nodules in the mid and lower zones. CT showed multiple nodules that cavitated with commencement of anti-fungal therapy. Follow-up CT showed complete resolution of the pulmonary nodules, confirming the diagnosis of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis. Aspergillus fumigatus presents clinically as aspergilloma, invasive pulmonary aspergillosis or allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis depending on the immune status of the host. The different manifestations are discussed and im

Pulmonary spread of laryngeal papillomatosis: radiological findings.

Laryngeal papillomatosis is a rare benign disease seen in children and young adults. The spread of laryngeal papillomas throughout the respiratory tract occurs rarely; and involvement of the distal bronchi, bronchioles, and lung parenchyma is very rare. We report a case of pulmonary spread of laryngeal papillomatosis in a 34-year-old man, focusing on the radiological evidence. Chest radiographs showed pulmonary nodules, but computed tomography scans more clearly demonstrated multiple small nodules showing cavitations and distributed centrilobularly. Pulmonary nodules and cavitations progressed

[Lung biopsy by video-assisted thoracic surgery in patient with untreated Evans syndrome].

A 78-year-old man referred to our hospital with the chief complaints of anorexia, general malaise, rash, and weight loss. Laboratory examination revealed pancytopenia, hyperglobulinemia, generalized adenopathy, and multiple pulmonary nodules. Video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) was performed to diagnose pulmonary nodules. After operation, it was difficult to achieve hemostasis for a while. Finally, the patient was diagnosed as pulmonary cryptococcosis and Evans syndrome.

[Pulmonary histoplasmosis in an immunocompetent patient].

INTRODUCTION: Acute pulmonary histoplasmosis (APH) is rare in an immunocompetent patient. We report a case of APH diagnosed by culture of broncho-alveolar lavage (BAL) in a patient presenting a pseudo-tumoral form with nodules progressing to cavitation. OBSERVATION: A 41 year-old male smoker was hospitalized with a persistent fever, dry cough and dyspnoea on exertion. The first CT scan showed a reticulo-nodular interstitial infiltrate with lymphadenopathy that progressed rapidly to multiple pulmonary nodules with central cavitation. Bronchial endoscopy, with BAL culture, provided the diagnosi

Clinical significance of small pulmonary nodules with little or no 18F-FDG uptake on PET/CT images of patients with nonthoracic malignancies.

UNLABELLED: Small pulmonary nodules with little or no perceptible (18)F-FDG uptake are relatively common findings on combined PET/CT images of patients with nonthoracic malignancies. Interpreting such nodules is often a diagnostic challenge, and this study aimed to evaluate the clinical significance of the nodules. METHODS: Patients with pulmonary nodules < or =1 cm in diameter showing no (18)F-FDG uptake or uptake less than the mediastinal background were included. Nodules with clearly benign or metastatic findings on CT were excluded. One hundred twenty-one patients had either tissue confir

High-resolution CT findings of patients with pulmonary nocardiosis.

BACKGROUND: Opportunistic pulmonary infection with Nocardia species is rare in humans, and only a few studies have radiologically analyzed patients with pulmonary nocardiosis using high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients with pulmonary nocardiosis at our hospital between April 2006 and December 2011 to assess HRCT and clinical findings. We also searched the medical literature for pulmonary nocardiosis reported in Japan between 2002 and 2011 for comparison. RESULTS: We identified seven patients at our institution and 33

Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy-Guided Dye Marking for Localization of Pulmonary Nodules.

BACKGROUND: Electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy (ENB)-guided dye marking is a useful localization method for small pulmonary nodules. This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of intraoperative full virtual ENB-guided dye marking. METHODS: Patients who underwent full virtual ENB-guided dye marking without adjunct intraoperative imaging (fluoroscopy or cone-beam computed tomography) for small pulmonary nodules were investigated retrospectively. Efficacy was evaluated on the basis of the success rates of dye marking (visible dye mark) and nodule localization, and safety was evaluated on

Aspergillus colonisation of pulmonary rheumatoid nodules: a rare cause of 'bull's eye' appearance.

Pulmonary rheumatoid nodules [PRNs] are a well described manifestation of rheumatoid arthritis [RA]. Fungal colonisation of these nodules is a rare phenomenon. We report a case of Aspergillus colonisation of multiple cavitary rheumatoid nodules in a young female patient with long-standing seropositive RA with 'bull's eye' appearance on computed tomography [CT]. The 'bull's eye' appearance inside PRNs should raise the suspicion of possible fungal colonisation. In patients with RA, a high index of suspicion for the fungal colonisation should be considered by the clinicians treating pulmonary cav

Multiple sequential pulmonary resections for metastatic pheochromocytoma with long-term survival.

Pheochromocytoma is not rare; indeed, it was discovered in 0.1 percent of consecutive autopsies and in 0.64 percent of a large group of patients screened for hypertension. A patient who underwent excision of a pheochromocytoma at age 7 years is presented. Seven years later, bilateral metastatic pulmonary nodules were excised. Fourteen years later, two metastatic pulmonary nodules were again excised. The patient is doing well 1 year after discharge. Surgical resection of multiple metastatic pheochromocytoma nodules is recommended.

Subpleural pulmonary hyalinizing granuloma presenting as a solitary pulmonary nodule.

We introduce a case of pulmonary hyalinizing granuloma presented as a solitary pulmonary nodule located subpleurally. The patient was a 57-year-old man who had abnormal chest roentgenograms showing a solitary pulmonary nodule in the right lower lung field. The nodule was resected for definitive diagnosis and histopathologically proved to be pulmonary hyalinizing granuloma. In previously reported cases, most patients had ill-defined margins and usually bilateral, multiple lesions radiographically. In our case, the subpleural location is an uncommon location of this rare entity.

Pulmonary Hyalinising Granuloma: A report of two cases.

Pulmonary hyalinising granuloma (PHG) is a rare fibrosclerosing inflammatory lung condition of unknown aetiology. It is characterised by solitary or multiple pulmonary nodules that are usually found incidentally while imaging the chest for other reasons. We report two cases of histologically proven PHG diagnosed at the Royal Hospital, Muscat, Oman. The first case was a 71-year-old male patient who presented in 2010 with a dry cough, weight loss and bilateral pulmonary nodules. The second case was a 58-year-old male patient who presented in 2012 and was found to have incidental bilateral pulmon

Pulmonary cryptococcosis: comparison of CT findings in immunocompetent and immunocompromised patients.

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT) findings in patients with pulmonary cryptococcosis have been reported, however, many reports were limited by the small number of patients, and not taken into account the distinction between immunocompetent and immunocompromised patients. PURPOSE: To retrospectively evaluate thoracic CT findings in patients with pulmonary cryptococcosis whose immune status ranged from normal to severely compromised, and determine characteristic imaging features of pulmonary cryptococcosis between patients with different immune status. MATERIAL AND METHODS: CT scan findings

The clincopathological variables to differentiate the nature of isolated pulmonary nodules in patients who received curative surgery for colorectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: In colorectal cancer (CRC) patients, pulmonary nodules are usually considered lung metastases (LM). However, approximately 10% of LM is presented as a solitary pulmonary nodule which mimics primary lung cancer (PLC). This study aims to determine the distinguishing characteristics of the two pulmonary nodule types during postoperative surveillance of CRC patients. METHODS: Between March 2009 and February 2018, 47 CRC patients with pulmonary nodules from a single institution were retrospectively analyzed. They were divided into two groups, namely CRC with second PLC (CSPLC) and CRC

Acute echinococcosis: a case report.

We report the case of a 69-year-old man with acute pulmonary echinococcosis. A computed tomographic scan of the thorax revealed the presence of multiple nodules in both lungs, and laboratory tests showed eosinophilia and the presence of antibodies against Echinococcus granulosus. Therapy with albendazole led to resolution of the pulmonary nodules and a normalization of the white cell count. To our knowledge this is the first described case of acute echinococcosis, as the diagnosis of this disease is usually delayed to chronic phases. Therefore, finding unexplained eosinophilia, especially in a

Metastasising leiomyoma of the uterus with pulmonary involvement - case report.

Benign metastasising leiomyoma (BML) is characterised by extrauterine smooth muscle tumours in women after surgical treatment for uterine leiomyoma. Usually manifested as solitary or multiple focal lesions in various organs, it imposes a scrutinous diagnostic work-up to exclude a malignant disease and requires confirmation in microscopic examination of the extrauterine focus. The authors present a case of a 56-year-old woman with BML manifesting as bilateral multiple pulmonary nodules, with a tentative diagnosis of a disseminated malignant disease of mesenchymal origin. The patient underwent m

Ectopic thyroid as multiple nodules in bilateral lung lobes: a case report.

Ectopic thyroid rarely occurs in the thoracic or abdominal cavity, especially in the lung. Here, we describe an intrapulmonary thyroid tissue case in bilateral lung lobes without thyroid malignant history, which was found during a routine physical examination. A 37-year-old Chinese female showed multiple pulmonary nodules appearing in bilateral lung lobes on a computed tomography (CT) scan during a routine medical examination. To rule out the possibility of lung metastasis from occult cancer, a percutaneous lung biopsy was performed on a larger nodule. Histopathological examination confirmed t

[A case of pulmonary hyalinizing granuloma with high-grade uptake on FDG-PET mimicking metastatic lung cancer].

A 28-year-old man was referred to Hakodate Municipal Hospital for examination of multiple pulmonary nodules detected on a medical check-up. His chest CT demonstrated well-defined multiple nodules with random distribution. 18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) showed abnormal uptake in the pulmonary nodules and the hilar, mediastinal lymph node. No other accumulation was observed outside the thorax. Transbronchial lung biopsy did not yield a diagnosis. Based on the high accumulation on FDG-PET, we suspected a malignant tumor and performed right S4 wedge resection under vi
