Combination of intermittent fasting and endurance exercise impedes the development of the musculoskeletal system in non-obese growing rats.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The proliferation of appearance-centered values on social media has driven non-obese adolescents towards increasingly extreme diets and exercise programs to achieve weight loss. Despite this, the effects of concurrent diets and exercise on musculoskeletal development during adolescence are unclear. This study examined whether prolonged endurance exercise (EX) with intermittent fasting during adolescence adversely affects musculoskeletal growth. MATERIALS/METHODS: Eight-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to 1 of 4 groups: sedentary (SED), intermittent fastin

Musculoskeletal involvement in systemic lupus erythematosus: a contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging study in 107 subjects.

OBJECTIVE: Joint involvement in SLE is the most frequent manifestation and shows a wide heterogeneity. It has not a valid classification and it is often underestimated. Subclinical inflammatory musculoskeletal involvement is not well known. We aim to describe the prevalence of joint and tendon involvement in hand and wrist of SLE patients, either with clinical arthritis, arthralgia or asymptomatic and compare it with healthy subjects using contrasted MRI. METHODS: SLE patients fulfilling SLICC criteria were recruited and classified as follows: group (G) 1: hand/wrist arthritis, G2: hand/wrist

[The DRFZ-a pioneer in research on the interaction between immune and stromal cells during de- and regeneration of the musculoskeletal system].

Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis are two related chronic diseases of the musculoskeletal system which are particularly pronounced in the region of joints and bones. Their pathogeneses are associated with chronic inflammation, which can disrupt homeostasis in bones and articular cartilage. Degradation products deriving from articular cartilage can contribute to the exacerbation of inflammation in the joint region. Mechanical stimuli and blood vessels also play a central role in both the regulation of bone growth as well as in the regeneration of bone tissue. Not only chronic inflammatory…

A Narrative Literature Review Comparing the Key Features of Musculoskeletal Involvement in Rheumatoid Arthritis and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.

Although the clinical approach to the management of musculoskeletal manifestations in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is often similar to that of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), there are distinct differences in immunopathogenesis, structural and imaging phenotypes and therapeutic evidence. Additionally, there are few published comparisons of these diseases. The objective of this narrative literature review is to compare the immunopathogenesis, structural features, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSUS) studies and management of joint manifestations in RA and SLE.

Musculoskeletal pathology as an early warning sign of systemic amyloidosis: a systematic review of amyloid deposition and orthopedic surgery.

BACKGROUND: Transthyretin and immunoglobulin light-chain amyloidoses cause amyloid deposition throughout various organ systems. Recent evidence suggests that soft tissue amyloid deposits may lead to orthopedic conditions before cardiac manifestations occur. Pharmacologic treatments reduce further amyloid deposits in these patients. Thus, early diagnosis improves long term survival. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: The primary purpose of this systematic review was to characterize the association between amyloid deposition and musculoskeletal pathology in patients with common orthopedic conditions.
