Novel metabolite madeirone and neomarinone extracted from Streptomyces aculeoletus as marine antibiofilm and antifouling agents.

Introduction: Biofouling poses a significant economic threat to various marine industries, leading to financial losses that can reach billions of euros annually. This study highlights the urgent need for effective alternatives to traditional antifouling agents, particularly following the global ban on organotin compounds. Material and methods: Streptomyces aculeolatus PTM-346 was isolated from sediment samples on the shores of the Madeira Archipelago, Portugal. The crude extract was fractionated using silica flash chromatography and preparative HPLC, resulting in two isolated marinone compound

E-MHK-0103 (Mineraxin™): A Novel Nutraceutical with Biological Properties in Menopausal Conditions.

BACKGROUND: Menopause-derived estrogen deprivation and related endocrine factors are linked to some symptoms typical of middle-aged women, such as hot flashes, aches, joint pain, stiffness, depressed mood, bone degeneration, nutritional dysfunction, or difficulty to maintain body mass. Clinical approaches to these problems often involve hormone replacement therapy and other modalities of therapeutic intervention. However, the well-known side effects associated with other pharmacological alternatives have led physicians and patients to pursue new strategies to alleviate these symptoms. As a phy

Widespread episodic thiamine deficiency in Northern Hemisphere wildlife.

Many wildlife populations are declining at rates higher than can be explained by known threats to biodiversity. Recently, thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency has emerged as a possible contributing cause. Here, thiamine status was systematically investigated in three animal classes: bivalves, ray-finned fishes, and birds. Thiamine diphosphate is required as a cofactor in at least five life-sustaining enzymes that are required for basic cellular metabolism. Analysis of different phosphorylated forms of thiamine, as well as of activities and amount of holoenzyme and apoenzyme forms of thiamine-depen

Intertidal invertebrates locally enhance primary production.

The contribution of autochthonous vs. allochthonous inputs to productivity is an important determinant of ecosystem function across multiple habitats. In coastal marine systems, nutrients are thought to come primarily from the upwelling of deep, nutrient-rich water. Using experimental manipulations of a dominant tide pool animal, the mussel Mytilus californianus, I show that the presence of mussels greatly increases the supply of inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus. Mussels further had a direct effect on productivity: benthic microalgal abundance increased by a factor of 4-8, while the growth of

Spatially differentiated byssus-related responses of the mussel foot to iron stimulation inform bioinspired adhesive fabrication.

Marine mussels fabricate durable underwater adhesives through coordinated precursor production, secretion, and metal-mediated assembly, yet the organization of these events within the foot remains poorly understood. In this study, anatomical, transcriptional, histochemical, and PBS-extractable protein analyses were integrated to characterize the foot of Mytilus coruscus under contrasting high- and low-concentration FeCl3 conditions (Fe1 and Fe2). The foot exhibited regional specialization. Plaque glands were concentrated distally, several Mfp transcripts were enriched in distal layers, PTMP tr

Bioactive compounds from marine mussels and their effects on human health.

The consumption of marine mussels as popular seafood has increased steadily over the past decades. Awareness of mussel derived molecules, that promote health, has contributed to extensive research efforts in that field. This review highlights the bioactive potential of mussel components from species of the genus Mytilus (e.g. M. edulis) and Perna (e.g. P. canaliculus). In particular, the bioactivity related to three major chemical classes of mussel primary metabolites, i.e. proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates, is evaluated. Within the group of proteins the focus is mainly on mussel peptides e.

Cytotoxic effect of palytoxin on mussel.

Palytoxin is a large and complex polyhydroxylated molecule with potent neurotoxic activity. Dinoflagellates from the Ostreopsis genera were demonstrated to be producers of this compound and analogues. Even though initially palytoxin appearance was restricted to tropical areas, the recent occurrence of Ostreopsis outbreaks in Mediterranean Sea point to a worldwide dissemination probably related to climatic change. Those dinoflagellates can bioaccumulate in shellfish, especially in filter-feeding mollusks and have been involved in damaging effects in seafood or human toxic outbreaks. The present

6PPD-quinone biomonitoring of salmon and mussels in Puget Sound, WA, USA.

6PPD-quinone (6PPD-Q) is a transformation product of tire rubber anti-oxidant 6PPD and is the causal toxicant for the urban runoff mortality syndrome (URMS) observed in coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) and other salmonid species. While 6PPD-Q has been measured in air, water, and sediments, data on 6PPD-Q body burdens in aquatic biota is limited. Here we conducted biomonitoring of 6PPD-Q in caged bay mussels (Mytilus trossulus) and juvenile Chinook salmon (O. tshawytscha) from nearshore sites and river estuaries across Puget Sound, WA, as well as a year-long water monitoring from three urban

Exposure to methylmercury and inorganic mercury in the food does not lead to trophic magnification in the sea star Asterias rubens.

Methylmercury accumulated at the top of aquatic food chains constitutes a toxicological risk to humans and other top predators. Biomagnification of methylmercury takes place among vertebrates at the higher trophic levels, but this process is less elucidated in benthic invertebrates at the lower trophic levels. Therefore, we investigated the accumulation from food and elimination of methylmercury and inorganic mercury in the benthic sea star Asterias rubens (L.) - a representative of trophic level ~3 - in laboratory experiments. Sea stars fed over 49 days with contaminated mussels (Mytilus edul

Lectins CGL and MTL, representatives of mytilectin family, exhibit different antiproliferative activity in Burkitt's lymphoma cells.

Lectins are carbohydrate-binding proteins, whose biological effects are exerted via binding to glycoconjugates expressed on the surface of cells. Exposure to lectins can lead not only to a change in the structure and properties of cells but also to their death. Here, we studied the biological activity of lectins from the mussels Crenomytilus graynus (CGL) and Mytilus trossulus (MTL) and showed that these proteins can affect the proliferation of human lymphoma cells. Both lectins suppressed the formation of colonies as well as cell cycle progression. The mechanism of action of these lectins was

Evaluation of the long-term effects of formaldehyde on the physiology of the Mediterranean mussel, Mytilusgalloprovincialis.

Formalin baths are the most widely used treatment for ectoparasitic fish diseases. Nonetheless, their use in fish cages has been blamed for a number of problems. Although a considerable amount of literature has been produced on the short-term toxic effects of formaldehyde, there is virtually no data on the long-term side effects of the compound on non-target organisms. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to assess the long-term formaldehyde toxicity in Mediterranean mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis, a common sentinel species that inhabits the area surrounding cage farms. Mussels were

Bioaccumulation of cyclopenta[cd]pyrene and benzo[ghi]fluoranthene by mussels transplanted in a coastal lagoon.

The bioaccumulation of two isomeric non-alternant non-priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), namely cyclopenta[cd]pyrene and benzo[ghi]fluoranthene, was investigated in caged mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) exposed for 30 days in three sites of a coastal lagoon (Pialassa Baiona, Ravenna, Italy) contaminated by pyrogenic PAHs. The concentration of cyclopenta[cd]pyrene and benzo[ghi]fluoranthene increased from undetectable levels in reference mussels withdrawn from the Adriatic sea to 10-30 ng g(-1) dry weight in transplanted mussels. Other contaminants bioaccumulated by caged mus

Occurrence and antibiotic susceptibility profiles of Burkholderia cepacia complex in coastal marine environment.

During an environmental study of bacterial resistance to antibiotics in coastal waters of the Kaštela Bay, Adriatic Sea, Croatia, 47 Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc) isolates were recovered from seawater and mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) samples. All isolates showed multiple antibiotic resistance. Among the isolates, two Burkholderia cenocepacia isolates produced chromosomally encoded TEM-116 extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL). Analysis of outer membrane proteins revealed that decreased expression of a 36-kDa protein could be associated with a high level of β-lactam resistance in both

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) disrupts cardiac performance of thick-shell mussel by inserting into the binding pocket of proliferator-activated receptor gamma and thereby causing lipid metabolism disorders.

Invertebrates constitute the largest group of animals on Earth, accounting for approximately 97 % of all animal species. Although the heart of invertebrates could be a sensitive target for environmental pollution, potential cardiotoxicity for most contaminants has received little attention. In this study, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and thick-shell mussels (Mytilus coruscus) were used to investigate the effect of PFOA on cardiac performance and the potential underlying mechanisms. Heart beat monitoring demonstrated that four-week exposure to 0.5 and 5.0 μg/L of PFOA resulted in bradycardia a

Biomonitoring of mercury in polluted coastal area using transplanted mussels.

The Kastela Bay is heavily polluted with inorganic mercury originated from direct discharges from the chlor-alkali plant, which operated in the period from 1950 to 1990. Even though the plant was closed 15 years ago, elevated levels of total mercury are still evident in surface sediments of the bay. In order to assess the availability of remobilized mercury to marine organisms, cultured mussels (M. galloprovincialis) were transplanted from pristine area to Kastela Bay, in the period from September 2000 to March 2001. Mussel samples were collected for the analysis of THg and MeHg in whole soft

Halogenated Cyclic Monoterpenoids with Anti-Biofouling Activity from the Okinawan Red Marine Algae Portieria Hornemannii.

The red algal genus Portieria is a prolific producer of halogenated monoterpenoids. In this study, we isolated and characterised monoterpenoids from the Okinawan red algae Portieria hornemannii. A new polyhalogenated cyclic monoterpenoid, 2(R)-chloro-1,6(S)-dibromo-3(8)(Z)-ochtoden-4(R)-ol (1), along with three known monoterpenoids, (2R,3(8)E,4S,6R)-6-bromo-2-chloro-1,4-oxido-3(8)-ochtodene (2), 1-bromo-2-chloroochtoda-3(8),5-dien-4-one (3), and 2-chloro-1-hydroxyochtoda-3(8),5-dien-4-one (4) were isolated from the methanol extract of three populations of P. hornemannii. Selective reduction method for separate determination of inorganic and total mercury in mussel tissue by flow-injection cold vapor technique.

A flow-injection cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry (FI-CV-AAS) method was developed to determine inorganic mercury and total mercury in mussel samples obtained from the Galicia coasts. The mussel samples were digested in a microwave oven using an HNO3/H2O2 mixture and then total mercury was determined using sodium borohydride as reducing agent. In a separate subsample, following ultrasonic extraction in hydrochloric acid medium, inorganic mercury was determined by selective reduction using stannous chloride in acid medium as reducing agent. The accuracy of the digestion method was chec

Local Crystallographic Texture of a Nummulite (Foraminifera) Test from the Eocene Deposits of the Crimea Peninsula.

Unicellular protozoa form calcium carbonate tests. It is important to understand the features and mechanisms of its formation. This may shed light on the processes of shell formation in metazoans. One of the most important characteristics of the Protozoa carbonate test is the degree of crystal ordering that can be described by crystallographic texture. The crystallographic texture data of calcite in the foraminifera Nummulites distans (Deshayes) test from the Eocene deposits (Cenozoic, Paleogene) of the Crimea Peninsula are obtained using X-ray diffraction. Human exposure to heavy metals and possible public health risks via consumption of mussels M. galloprovincialis from the Albanian sea cost.

Heavy metals in the marine environment are significant contaminants that readily bioaccumulate in the tissues of aquatic organisms, particularly in filter-feeding animals such as bivalve molluscs. Human exposure to elevated concentrations of heavy metals, including essential elements such as Fe, Cu, and Zn, through the consumption of seafood can lead to various pathological effects. Research has demonstrated that among bivalve molluscs, mussels are the most effective indicators for monitoring marine pollution. Consequently, this study focused on the species Mytilus galloprovincialis to evaluat
