Lymphangiomatous polyp of the nasal cavity: a rare presentation.

Lymphangiomatous polyp of the nasal cavity is a very rare condition. We are reporting a case of a unilateral nasal mass presenting with noisy breathing during sleep, change of voice, watery nasal discharge, and anosmia in a 5-year-old boy. The mass was removed via a transnasal endoscopic approach, and a diagnosis of lymphangiomatous nasal polyp was established by histopathology.

Lactoferrin inhibits the growth of nasal polyp fibroblasts.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of lactoferrin (LF) on the growth of fibroblasts derived from nasal polyps. We showed that the proliferation of fibroblasts was inhibited in a dose-dependent manner by both native and recombinant LF. The greatest inhibition of proliferation was caused by human milk-derived, iron-saturated LF. The inhibition of fibroblast proliferation was not species specific because bovine LF also was active. The interaction between LFs and a putative cell receptor did not depend on the sugar composition of the glycan moiety of the LF molecule because lactofer…

The role of superantigens in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps.

Recent reports suggest that staphylococcal exotoxins, acting as superantigens, activate T cells with subsequent massive proliferation, thereby contributing to the etiology of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP). The objectives of this study are (1) to demonstrate directly the presence of staphylococcal exotoxins in nasal mucosa and sinonasal polyp tissue, and (2) provide indirect evidence of the effect of superantigens on the T cells expressing the target of superantigen, i.e., the beta variable chain receptor (TCRBV) in polyp tissue and peripheral blood of patients with CRSwNP. …

Effect of glucocorticoid on the MUC4 gene in nasal polyps.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Among the airway mucin genes, the MUC4 gene is an important gene in its response to inflammatory diseases of the upper airway. However, the expression and regulation of the MUC4 gene in the nasal polyps remains unclear. STUDY DESIGN: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the expression of MUC4 mRNA and synthesis of mucin glycoprotein in the nasal polyps before and after treatment with a topical steroid in vivo and in vitro. METHODS: Nasal polyps were obtained from 20 patients with chronic rhinosinusitis and were subsequently cultured. The level of MUC4 mRNA was mea…

The prevalence of nasal polyps in adults with cystic fibrosis.

The endoscopic intranasal appearance of 211 adult patients with cystic fibrosis was studied. The prevalence of nasal polyps in this study was 37%. The commonest nasal symptoms were discharge, headache and obstruction. Intranasal endoscopy usually demonstrated mucosal oedema and thin, clear discharge. The prevalence of allergy, as diagnosed by skin prick testing, was almost twice that of the general population. Tympanometry showed that middle ear effusion was uncommon in these patients.

Budesonide aqueous nasal spray: an updated review in managing chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps.

Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is a frequent medical condition. Type 2 inflammation signs CRSwNP in western countries. Type 2 inflammation leads to nasal airflow limitation. Budesonide aqueous nasal spray (BANS) is an intranasal corticosteroid (INCS); it has been launched in the early 1980s. BANS is indicated for treating allergic rhinitis, nonallergic rhinitis, and nasal polyps (both as treatment and prevention after surgery). Consolidated evidence documented its efficacy in treating CRSwNP. In addition, BANS is safe with negligible local and systemic side effects. Recent g…

A diagnostic model for predicting type 2 nasal polyps using biomarkers in nasal secretion.

BACKGROUND: Predicting type 2 chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) may help for selection of appropriate surgical procedures or pharmacotherapies in advance. However, an accurate non-invasive method for diagnosis of type 2 CRSwNP is presently unavailable. METHODS: To optimize the technique for collecting nasal secretion (NasSec), 89 CRSwNP patients were tested using nasal packs made with four types of materials. Further, Th2low and Th2highCRSwNP defined by clustering analysis in another 142 CRSwNP patients using tissue biomarkers, in the meanwhile, inflammatory biomarkers were de…

Advance in biologics for chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps.

Managing chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) poses challenges, especially when conventional treatments fail to achieve adequate symptom control. CRSwNP is often marked by type 2 inflammation, and a large number of patients have other comorbid type 2 conditions, such as asthma. Currently, 4 biologics have been approved to treat CRSwNP-dupilumab, omalizumab, mepolizumab, and stapokibart (stapokibart is approved in China but not by the US Food and Drug Administration)-with additional promising therapies currently under development. Biologics can enhance the quality of life for CRSwN…

Biologic Therapies across Nasal Polyp Subtypes.

Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis is a common inflammatory condition, with subtypes like aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease, allergic fungal rhinosinusitis, and central compartment atopic disease sharing a common type 2 inflammatory pathway. Respiratory biologic therapies have been developed that target type 2 inflammation. In this article, we discuss the use of respiratory biologic therapies for nasal polyposis in general, as well as within the various subtypes of nasal polyps. Further, we discuss future roles of novel biologic therapies targeting type 2 inflammation in nasal p…
