Family history and the natural history of colorectal cancer: systematic review.

PURPOSE: Family history of colorectal cancer (CRC) is a known risk factor for CRC and encompasses both genetic and shared environmental risks. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review to estimate the impact of family history on the natural history of CRC and adherence to screening. RESULTS: We found high heterogeneity in family-history definitions, the most common definition being one or more first-degree relatives. The prevalence of family history may be lower than the commonly cited 10%, and confirms evidence for increasing levels of risk associated with increasing family-history burden. …

Natural History of YWHAG-Associated Neurodevelopmental Disorder.

BACKGROUND: The YWHAG gene encodes a member of the 14-3-3 protein family important for cellular signaling and neuronal migration. Recent studies suggest its role in early-onset epilepsy, epileptic encephalopathy, and seizures in children. However, the natural history of this disorder has not been described. Here we report results of the first prospective natural history study to date in children with YWHAG-associated Neurodevelopmental Disorders (YWHAG-NDDs). METHODS: The YWHAG Natural History Study is a prospective, single site, nonrandomized, longitudinal study of individuals with neurodeve…

The natural history of celiac artery aneurysms.

ObjectivesThe goal of this study was to document the natural history of celiac artery aneurysms (CAAs).BackgroundCeliac artery aneurysms are rare. Existing literature is skewed towards outcomes after intervention of large, symptomatic aneurysms but the behavior of untreated CAAs is poorly understood.MethodsThis is a single institution, retrospective analysis of patients with CAA diagnosed by CT imaging (2015-2019) identified through an institutional radiology database. Radiologic, demographic, and follow-up data were analyzed. The primary endpoint was the mean growth rate of CAAs.ResultsOf the…

Myeloblastic meningeal neoplasm: an unusual natural history.

Myeloid sarcoma is a very rare extramedullary malignant tumour, most often associated with acute myeloid leukaemia. We report the case of a man in his early 20s who presented with chronic headache, raised intracranial pressure and progressive vision loss of 2 years duration with no systemic manifestations. He had a history of myeloid sarcoma of the left thigh 15 years ago, treated with external beam radiotherapy and in complete remission for more than 13 years. However, the progressive blindness remained unexplained for 2 years, and he was eventually diagnosed with isolated meningeal relapse w

Atrial Appendage Aneurysms: Natural History and Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Left (LAAA) and right atrial appendage aneurysms (RAAA) are rare entities, and their natural history, management, and long-term outcomes are not well studied. METHODS: This retrospective review includes all patients from 2000 to 2021 with atrial appendage aneurysms at our institution identified using an electronic search tool. LAAA and RAAA were confirmed using multimodality imaging and intraoperative findings. RESULTS: We identified 13 (87%) patients with LAAA and 2 (13%) with RAAA. At diagnosis, 11 (73%) were female, mean age was 51.4  ±  18.8 years, and ejection fraction 56.5 …

Lassa Fever Natural History and Clinical Management.

Lassa fever is caused by Lassa virus (LASV), an Old World Mammarenavirus that is carried by Mastomys natalensis and other rodents. It is endemic in Sierra Leone, Nigeria, and other countries in West Africa. The clinical presentation of LASV infection is heterogenous varying from an inapparent or mild illness to a fatal hemorrhagic fever. Exposure to LASV is usually through contact with rodent excreta. After an incubation period of 1-3 weeks, initial symptoms such as fever, headache, and fatigue develop that may progress to sore throat, retrosternal chest pain, conjunctival injection, vomiting,

The natural history of infantile neuroaxonal dystrophy.

BACKGROUND: Infantile neuroaxonal dystrophy (INAD) is a rapidly progressive neurodegenerative disorder of early onset causing premature death. It results from biallelic pathogenic variants in PLA2G6, which encodes a calcium-independent phospholipase A2. OBJECTIVE: We aim to outline the natural history of INAD and provide a comprehensive description of its clinical, radiological, laboratory, and molecular findings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We comprehensively analyzed the charts of 28 patients: 16 patients from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, 8 patients from North and South America and 4 patients from Eur…

The Natural History of Iron Deficiency Anemia.

BACKGROUND: Current evidence suggests that adult men and nonmenstruating women with iron deficiency anemia (IDA) should undergo gastrointestinal (GI) evaluation to detect a potential bleeding lesion. We hypothesized that after endoscopic evaluation and treatment, IDA would be expected to resolve. Thus, we aimed to understand the natural history of IDA, in particular long-term outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adult patients with IDA (defined as anemia and ferritin <50 ng/mL) who were diagnosed between 2004 and 2008 and who underwent endoscopic evaluation as part of their diagnostic work-up for…

The Natural History of Lower Extremity Malalignment.

BACKGROUND: Lower extremity malalignment is a common problem presented to pediatric orthopaedists. Risk for early arthritis is often a concern among parents seeking advice and treatment. We seek to review previous research with regard to the natural history of malalignment. METHODS: A search of available literature on PubMed was constructed to capture articles covering the natural history of malalignment, secondary to childhood fracture as well as congenital and acquired pediatric deformity. In order to remain strictly relevant to pediatrics, articles reviewing deformities acquired in adultho…

Natural History of Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis.

BACKGROUND: Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) occurs at a rate of 1 in 10,000 to 20,000 children. METHODS: A PubMed search was undertaken to evaluate recent SCFE literature. A convenience sample of articles were selected and summarized. RESULTS: Most slips appear well tolerated long-term with ∼5% resulting in total hip arthroplasty (THA) at 20-year follow-up. Classic data reveals poor outcomes following closed reduction for treatment of SCFE. Improvements in intraoperative fluoroscopy and avoidance of pin penetration have reduced the rates of chondrolysis. Unfortunately, avascular nec
