A 17-year-old boy with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus developed ketoacidosis and transitory shock. After resolution of his metabolic imbalance, he developed an acute abdomen prompting exploratory surgery. A section of necrotic ileum was found and resected.

Bone marrow necrosis (BMN) is a rare complication and is characterized by the presence of an eosinophilic amorphous material in the bone marrow. The clinical, analytical and histological characteristics of 4 patients with BMN associated to a neoplastic process are described. A patient suffering from an unusual syndrome, in which the following triad was present, is described: (1) Recurrent necrosis of the skin and mouth; and necrosis following intradermal injection of saline. (2) Disappearance of the necrotic episodes following the administration of prednisone. (3) Mental retardation. This syndrome does not appear to have been previously reported.

On the basis of observed cases the avascular necrosis of the head of the upper arm is discussed. After the lesion occurred on the proximal end of the humerus this late complication is not to be excluded. Besides the roentgenological signs, in the authors' opinion, the "free interval" in the patients' complaints may be of the greatest importance. The disturbance of the blood supply of the fractured piece of the upper arm may be responsible for the protracted recovery, in certain cases even for the lasting limitation of motion. No surgical treatment has been performed in the authors' cases.

Despite anti-TNF therapy advancements for inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, the burden of diseases remains high. An 11-mer TNF peptide, TNF70-80, is known to stimulate selective functional responses compared to the parent TNF molecule. Here, we show that TNF70-80 binds to the TNF receptor, activating p38 MAP kinase through TNF receptor-associated factor 2. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the outcomes of using cementless femoral stem for extensive osteonecrosis of the femoral head involving the proximal femur.
METHODS: A total of 21 patients (27 hips) in the study group defined as extensive ONFH involving proximal femur and 42 patients (52 hips) with the diagnosis of regular osteonecrosis of the femoral head in the control group were enrolled in the study. We report the case of a mid-30s parturient who presented with sore throat and dysphagia a day after undergoing laparoscopic right ovarian cystectomy under general anaesthesia. The procedure of intubation and extubation was straightforward and there were no complications in the airway intraoperatively.
