Neighborhood social environments and mental health among youth and adults in public housing.

Neighborhoods influence health in part through social processes. However, little is known about how multiple neighborhood social processes co-occur, or about within (vs. between) neighborhood variation in social processes and health. This study asked how residents of a large public housing development describe their neighborhood and used latent profile analysis to develop profiles of residents according to their social environment perceptions (N = 527, Mage = 44, 15% Asian, 19% Black, 38% Latino, 19% White, 8% other). We included cross-race interactions as an understudied aspect of the social

Neighborhood disadvantage and the back-to-school epidemic of viral-associated asthma exacerbations.

BACKGROUND: Rates of viral-associated asthma exacerbations typically increase when children return to school after the summer holiday. The effect of neighborhood disadvantage on this back-to-school increase in viral-associated asthma exacerbations is unknown. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate the effect of neighborhood disadvantage on the back-to-school increase in asthma-related emergency department (ED) visits. METHODS: Administrative health records were used to define population-based incidence rates of asthma-related ED visits by week and census tract among children aged 5 to 17 years. Usi

Exposure profiles of social-environmental neighborhood factors and persistent distressing psychotic-like experiences across four years among young adolescents in the US.

BACKGROUND: Recent research has demonstrated that domains of social determinants of health (SDOH) (e.g. air pollution and social context) are associated with psychosis. However, SDOHs have often been studied in isolation. This study investigated distinct exposure profiles, estimated their associations with persistent distressing psychotic-like experiences (PLE), and evaluated whether involvement in physical activity partially explains this association. METHODS: Analyses included 8,145 young adolescents from the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development Study. Data from the baseline and three

Individual Risk Versus Population Incidence: A Case Example With Congenital Heart Defects.

OBJECTIVE: Many studies have shown that individuals in low socioeconomic status neighborhoods are more likely to have a severe congenital heart defect (CHD) compared to those in higher socioeconomic status neighborhoods. These studies conclude that this finding should be leveraged for population health policy. However, individual-level associations may not extend to populations. Thus, our objective was to estimate associations between county-level median home value and county-level incidence of live-born, severe CHDs. METHODS: Ecological analysis of statewide panel data at the county-year lev

Association between residential proximity to major roadways and low muscle mass among Chinese older adults: a nationwide cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Low muscle mass (LMM) has high incidence among the older adults, residential environment including air pollution and noise have influence on it, and residential proximity to major roadways (RPMR) is closely related to these factors. Nevertheless, there is no research regarding the association between RPMR and LMM, especially among Chinese older adults. METHODS: The data was derived from the 2018 waves of China Longitudinal Health and Longevity Survey (CLHLS) in this study. We evaluated the distance of RPMR and whether participants experienced LMM, and we constructed four binary lo

The effects of neighborhood disadvantage and adverse childhood experiences on conditioned pain modulation in adults with chronic low back pain.

Chronic low back pain (cLBP) remains a major health crisis worldwide. Current conceptualizations of cLBP utilize the biopsychosocial model, yet research on social factors remains limited. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are a risk factor for a variety of chronic health problems, including cLBP. However, the extent to which socioeconomic context might influence associations between ACEs and cLBP remains unclear. Socioeconomic factors such as healthcare access and living conditions, which cluster at the neighborhood level, may affect how ACEs relate to cLBP in adulthood. This study examined

Associations of Park Use with Physical Activity in Renovated Parks Serving Low-Income Communities in New York City: Insights from the Community Parks Initiative.

Parks have the potential to encourage physical activity among urban communities. However, existing research on the link between park use and physical activity has produced inconsistent results. Mixed findings in the past may be due in part to differences in park quality across studies. The aim of this study was to explore the association between park use and physical activity among New York City adults in low-income communities that recently received city-sponsored park renovation as part of the Community Parks Initiative (CPI). Using population-weighted survey data from eight neighborhoods wi

Birth outcomes in relation to neighborhood food access and individual food insecurity during pregnancy in the Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO)-wide cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Limited access to healthy foods, resulting from residence in neighborhoods with low-food access or from household food insecurity, is a public health concern. Contributions of these measures during pregnancy to birth outcomes remain understudied. OBJECTIVES: We examined associations between neighborhood food access and individual food insecurity during pregnancy with birth outcomes. METHODS: We used data from 53 cohorts participating in the nationwide Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes-Wide Cohort Study. Participant inclusion required a geocoded residential address

Deprivation and suicide mortality across 424 neighborhoods in Seoul, South Korea: a Bayesian spatial analysis.

OBJECTIVES: A neighborhood-level analysis of mortality from suicide would be informative in developing targeted approaches to reducing suicide. This study aims to examine the association of community characteristics with suicide in the 424 neighborhoods of Seoul, South Korea. METHODS: Neighborhood-level mortality and population data (2005-2011) were obtained to calculate age-standardized suicide rates. Eight community characteristics and their associated deprivation index were employed as determinants of suicide rates. The Bayesian hierarchical model with mixed effects for neighborhoods was u

Neighborhood Disorder, Family Functioning, and Risky Sexual Behaviors in Adolescence.

Adolescent risky sexual behaviors can result in negative consequences such as sexually transmitted infection. However, much research effort has been placed on understanding individual characteristics, rather than the role of neighborhood environment. This study addressed the prospective effects of neighborhood and family functioning in preadolescence on risky sexual behaviors. Participants included 4179 youth (Mage = 11.01 years, range 8.64-13.83; 51% female) and their caregivers. Using objective and self-reported measures of neighborhood and family functioning, results from multilevel regress

Neighborhood Profiles and Associations with Coping Behaviors among Low-Income Youth.

Extant research has typically examined neighborhood characteristics in isolation using variable-centered approaches; however, there is reason to believe that perceptions of the neighborhood environment influence each other, requiring the use of person-centered approaches to study these relationships. The present study sought to determine profiles of youth that differ in their perceptions of their neighborhoods and objective neighborhood characteristics, and whether these profiles are associated with youth coping. Participants were low-income, African American youth (N= 733; 51.0% female, M age…

Association of Involuntary Displacement of People Experiencing Homelessness and Crime in Denver, CO: A Spatiotemporal Analysis.

In 2022, approximately 580,000 people experienced homelessness in the United States. In response, many cities have implemented "camping ban" policies enforced by involuntary displacement of homeless encampments. Displacement has been cited as a strategy to protect public health and safety. However, there is mixed evidence that displacement is effective in reducing crime, while it is associated with other adverse health outcomes. To evaluate the neighborhood-level association between displacement and crime, we performed a retrospective (November 2019 to July 2023) pre-post spatiotemporal analys

Racial Residential Segregation and Hypertensive Disorder of Pregnancy Among Women in Chicago: Analysis of Electronic Health Record Data.

BACKGROUND: Racial residential segregation is associated with higher rates of chronic hypertension, as well as greater risk of preterm birth and low birthweight. However, few studies have examined associations between segregation and hypertensive disorder of pregnancy (HDP). METHODS: Electronic health records from 4,748 singleton births among non-Hispanic black women at Prentice Women's Hospital in Chicago, IL (2009-2013) were geocoded to the census tract level. Residential segregation was measured using the Gi* statistic, a z-score measuring the extent to which each individual's neighborhood
