Brenner tumors are uncommon ovarian neoplasms, most of which are benign, although borderline and malignant variants occur. We report 2 unusual ovarian neoplasms composed of an admixture of typical benign Brenner tumor and a low-grade epithelial neoplasm which we designate as low-grade basaloid carcinoma. The latter component morphologically and immunohistochemically resembled "salivary gland-type/myoepithelial" neoplasms with variable positive staining with cytokeratins, p63, S100, and CD117. One tumor exhibited aggressive behavior with local recurrence and distant metastasis. This neoplasm ex

Merkel cell carcinoma is an infrequent but highly aggressive cutaneous neoplasm. Previous reports of ocular involvement have included primary eyelid carcinomas, eyelid and orbital metastases, and a clinically diagnosed choroidal metastasis. The authors report the histopathologic documentation of a metastatic lesion to the ciliary body, confirming the intraocular metastatic potential of this tumor.

Tenosynovial giant cell tumor (TGCT) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm arising from the synovium, tendon sheath, or bursa. Although the localized and diffuse forms of TGCT are typically considered benign, malignant TGCT characterized by marked histologic atypia and increased mitotic activity may exhibit aggressive clinical behavior. Pulmonary metastasis from malignant TGCT is rare and, in previously reported cases, pulmonary involvement has predominantly been described as parenchymal nodules or pleural lesions. In this article, we describe a rare case of endobronchial pulmonary metastasis occurri

Myxopapillary ependymomas (MPEs) are rare spinal cord tumors with low rates of metastasis outside of the neuraxis. Gross total resection of MPEs can significantly improve progression-free survival; however, adjunctive treatment remains unstandardized. A 29-year-old female with a history of spina bifida occulta surgical correction and lower back pain presented with dyspnea and tachycardia. A large pulmonary artery mass was discovered consistent with pulmonary thromboembolism. It was subsequently determined to be an intravascular metastasis secondary to sacral MPE. Standardization of MPE treatme

Masaoka stage I type A thymomas rarely recur. We report the case of an 82-year-old man who developed endobronchial metastasis after thymothymectomy for Masaoka stage I type A thymoma. Twenty years after surgery, the patient developed bloody sputum, and chest computed tomography revealed a neoplasm obstructing the right upper lobe bronchus of the lung with enlarged mediastinal lymph nodes. He underwent right upper lobectomy and mediastinal lymph node dissection. Although preoperative pathological diagnosis was squamous cell carcinoma of the lung, postoperative histopathology revealed endobronch

Melanoma is the deadliest cutaneous neoplasm. To prevent metastasis, early diagnosis and surgical treatment is vital. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) may serve as biomarkers and therapeutic targets in tumors. We investigated the molecular mechanisms of lncRNA KCNQ1OT1 in melanoma. Real time PCR demonstrated that KCNQ1OT1 expression is up-regulated in melanoma tissues and cells. KCNQ1OT1 promoted cell proliferation and metastasis in melanoma. By directly bindin to miR-153, KCNQ1OT1 acted as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) to de-repress MET expression. Our results may provide the basis for a n

Esthesioneuroblastoma is a rare malignant neoplasm in the olfactory region of the nasal cavity and anterior skull base. Diagnosis and staging require anatomic imaging and careful pathologic assessment. Standard treatment is anterior craniofacial resection with postoperative irradiation. The role for chemotherapy is not defined, but is generally for the most advanced cases and used in the neoadjuvant setting and/or postoperatively with irradiation. Prognosis is favorable; however, metastasis rates remain relatively high. Regional and distant metastasis portends a poor outcome. Intensity-modulat

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is a leading cause of death in developed countries. This neoplasm frequently relapses at distant sites such as bone, lung, pleura, brain and liver but rarely in the lower female genital tract.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the first case of isolated vaginal breast cancer metastasis and its surgical treatment.
CONCLUSION: This case report focuses on the importance of an accurate genital tract examination as part of regular follow up in breast cancer survivors. Indeed, after this experience we feel that surgery could be considered a valid option for the treatment of a

The case of a 54 year old patient suffering from gastrinoma (within a type I multiple endocrine neoplasm) is presented. In 1990, she underwent a surgical resection. Eight years later, she suffered from a pain in the left thigh. The 99mTc-MDP bone scintigraphy showed bone metastasis. The CT scan did not show any hepatic involvement and the scintigraphy with 111In-Pentetreotide verified bone metastasis of a neuroendocrine tumor as a single expression of the recidive. In this case, the utility of the scintigraphy with octreotide to facilitate the localization and extent of the neuroendocrine tumo

We are reporting four cases of clear cell neoplasm. Local infiltration and destruction was observed in one case while in a second case, originating in the sublingual gland, metastasis to the lymph nodes occurred. The behaviour of these neoplasms has prompted the suggestion that these tumours be designated carcinomas rather that noncommittally tumours or neoplasms (Batsakis and Regezzi, 1977). The histopathological characteristics of our four cases conform to those that have been articulated and believed to be the distinctive features of these tumours (Batsakis and Regezzi, 1977). It is hoped t

BACKGROUND: Eccrine porocarcinoma (EP) is a rare malignant skin neoplasm, and there are still many unknowns regarding its natural history and treatment. Due to its scarcity, associated brain metastasis is a far rarer condition.
OBSERVATIONS: A 71-year-old-woman with a history of EP was diagnosed with brain metastasis. In her clinical course, the patient underwent tumor removal surgery twice and Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKRS) four times. The tumor showed a good response to radiotherapy. The histopathological findings of the brain tumor were consistent with those of the primary skin tumor.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Malignant pheochromocytoma is a rare neoplasm of chromaffin tissue. Very few cases of malignant adrenal pheochromocytoma metastatic to vertebrae exist.
PURPOSE: To determine the prognosis of a patient with an excised adrenal pheochromocytoma and a single metachronous metastasis to the upper dorsal spine.
STUDY DESIGN: Case report
METHODS: The authors report a patient who underwent total excision of an adrenal pheochromocytoma of the left adrenal gland in 2000 who developed a single metastasis to the second dorsal vertebra in 2002 with no evidence of abdominal recurrence.

Tumor-to-tumor metastasis is a rare phenomenon. On the basis of our review of international literature, there have been 7 reports of tumor-to-tumor metastasis cases involving ovary neoplasms as the recipient. However, an ovarian granulosa cell tumor has not been reported to be a recipient. Here, we report the first case of gastric signet-ring cell carcinoma metastasis to a bilateral ovarian granulosa cell tumor. Awareness of this phenomenon is important to avoid incorrect diagnoses when encountering unusual morphologic features in ovarian granulosa cell tumors.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is an infrequent malignant neoplasm that originates most commonly in the major and minor salivary glands of the head and neck region. This study provides new information on head and neck ACC with cervical lymph node metastasis. Of 616 patients who underwent primary tumour resection from 1995 to 2008 in the authors' hospital, 62 cases with cervical lymph node metastasis were analyzed. The general incidence of cervical lymph node metastasis in ACC was approximately 10%. The base of tongue, mobile tongue and mouth floor were the most frequent sites of lymph nodes me

Hidradenocarcinoma is a rare form of malignant adnexal tumor. This malignant tumor has been reported to metastasize to regional lymph nodes, and distant metastasis into structures like the orbit and extraocular muscle is uncommon. Orbital metastasis comprises about 10% of all orbital neoplasms. Common systemic malignancies contributing to orbital metastasis are breast cancer, prostate cancer, and skin malignancy, melanoma. We report the case of a middle-aged man with left axillary hidradenocarcinoma with an orbital metastatic lesion infiltrating the inferior rectus muscle with optic nerve invo

Ependymomas are commonly classified as low-grade tumors, although they may harbor a malignant behavior characterized by distant neural dissemination and spinal drop metastasis. Extra-CNS ependymoma metastases are extremely rare and only few cases have been reported in the lung, lymph nodes, pleura, mediastinum, liver, bone, and diaphragmatic, abdominal, and pelvic muscles. A review of the literature yielded 14 other case reports metastasizing outside the central nervous system, but to our knowledge, no studies describe metastasis in the paravertebral muscles. Herein, we report the case of a 39

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is well known for its unpredictable and diverse behaviour, with tendency to cause synchronous or metachronous metastasis to unusual site, which is why it is called the "internist's tumour."Although thyroid gland is an infrequent site for metastasis of different primary malignancies, metastatic RCC is one of the most common secondary thyroid malignancies. Diagnosis relies on a high index of suspicion in patients with prior RCC, combined with cross-sectional imaging and biopsy. A case of secondary thyroid neoplasm from RCC after 13 years of radical nephrectomy is descr

Metastatic disease to the breast is rare. Melanoma and lymphoma are the most common primary tumors metastasizing to the breast, and breast metastasis from a primary lung neoplasm is uncommon. It can be difficult to distinguish metastatic disease from primary breast cancer clinically. Immunohistochemistry, combined with further diagnostic imaging, play important roles in identifying the primary origin of the malignancy. An accurate diagnosis is imperative for therapeutic planning, and further workup should be considered for unusual cytological patterns. In this report, three cases of pulmonary

OBJECTIVES: Metastases to the heart are rare. We report a case of squamous cell carcinoma of the base of tongue secondarily complicated with cardiac metastasis 6 months after surgical treatment resulted in successful local control.
METHODS: The lesion was found using computerized axial tomography in a patient with minimal cardiologic symptoms.
RESULTS: The patient died shortly due to complications of his metastatic disease. No curative treatment was possible.
CONCLUSIONS: Cardiac metastasis should be suspected when new cardiovascular symptoms are observed in patients with a history of head
